The appendix on scientific thought in ecology is m o s t valuable and exposes the usually covert "front end" o f science, which involves quest ion-asking and devel- opment o f hypotheses, to considerat ion by the students. I am impressed with the thoughtfulness o f this material. The appendices on literature sources and writing journal-style scientific papers are also quite good and warn against c o m m o n stu- dent errors. Statistical tests have a section too.

Overall this is a manual o f broad scope and wide application. It clearly c o m e s out o f midwestern U.S. experience, but the exercises should work well in a variety o f env ironments . The exercises have obvious ly benefitted from student use and much practical experience is shared with the reader. While goals and concepts are presented clearly, the authors' own biases do not get in the way. I will certainly use this lab manual for plant and general ecology courses.--STEWARD T. A.
