UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of love, all year long we pursue power and money, yet You come in weakness. All season long we covet great material gifts, when You alone offer what is lasting. Through the work of this Lord Jesus, who comes among us full of grace and truth, forgive us, heal us, correct us. Then open our lips, that we may sing Your praise with the angels, and remake our lives, that we may witness to Your transforming love. Through Christ, our Lord, we pray… (time for us to offer silent prayers of confession.)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 2:1-12 Jon Frost (Pew Bible pg. 783-4)

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.”

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 2:13-15 Bob Boell (Pew Bible pg. 784)Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 2:16-18 Jean Boell (Pew Bible pg. 784)When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:‘A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation,Rachel weeping for her children;she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’

GATHERING THOUGHT Like every newborn, he has come from very far. His eyes are closed against the brilliance of the star. So glorious is he, he goes to this immoderate length To show his love for us, discarding power and strength. Girded for war, humility his mighty dress, He moves into the battle wholly weaponless.

GATHERING THOUGHT

“How interesting that God, who could have chosen any genealogy for his Son, chose a long line of brokenness, imperfection, dishonor, and scandal. The perfect backdrop, I suppose, for his beautiful works of restoration, healing, hope, and second chances.”

People: Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths.

Lighters: This first Sunday of Advent, we remember that we are a people of hope waiting for the return of our LORD and the renewal of all things.

Leader: Forgive us, O God, for we have not walked in Your paths and have often exchanged hope for despair.

People: God of night and day, there is no shadow that can conceal our sin from You and no secret that You will not bring to light. Forgive our sins, renew us in love, and teach us to live in a way that brings honor and glory to Your name.

Lighters: We light the first candle of Advent for hope. We long for the day when our swords are beaten into plowshares; our spears into pruning hooks; when nations no longer lift up sword against nation; when war will be no more.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 24: 36-44 (pew Bible pg. 806)

“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

Romans 13: 11-14 (pew Bible pg. 923)

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of

darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Pastor: The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHKnowing Christ…..Making Christ Known

December 1, 201911:10 A.M. Contemporary

GATHERING THOUGHT“In a very real sense, the Christian community lives in Advent all the time. It can well be called the Time Between, because the people of God live in the time between the first coming of Christ, incognito in the stable in Bethlehem, and his second coming, in glory, to judge the living and the dead. In the Time Between, 'our lives are hidden with Christ in God; when Christ who is our life appears, then we also will appear with him in glory' (Col. 3:3-4). Advent contains within itself the crucial balance of the now and the not-yet that our faith requires.” -Fleming Rutledge, Advent: The Once and Future Coming of Jesus Christ

As we and those we love grow older, there are opportunities for spiritual growth and for deepening our spiritual lives: accepting change, seeing miracles, expressing gratitude, slowing down and blessing others. Come explore issues of growing older and share spiritual wisdom and insights as we travel together the journey of aging. People of all ages are welcome!Susan Scott, author of the book, Still Praying After All These Years, will facilitate. She is an ordained UCC pastor and a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Chaplains. She completed Shalem Institute’s Spiritual Guidance Program. She has a spiritual direction practice in Southern Chester County. A copy of her book is in the WPC library.

In the midst of global and national unrest and chaos, God’s kingdom is growing and thriving in obscure regions. Where in the world is this happening? Who is involved? And how can a Western church participate in this movement? Elaine Vaden will help us to explore some answers. Dr. Elaine Vaden has lived and taught in Zambia, the Philippines, Iraq, India, Lithuania, Nepal and Mexico. She serves with The Antioch Partners (TAP) as a theological-missiological educator. She holds a Doctor of Missiology from Fuller School of Intercultural Studies and is a ruling elder in the PCUSA.

January 26 – 9:45AM in Spellman Jr. Eric Liddell: Olympic Champion, Missionary to China, Christian Martyr

Page 45: ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD€¦  · Web viewPeople: Come, let us worship; come, let us adore him: Christ the Lord! HYMN . Angles from the Realms of Glory (please stand if able)

Dr. John Hurt will share with us the remarkable life and witness of Eric Liddell. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, Eric Liddell refused to run in the heats for his favored 100 meters because they were held on a Sunday. Instead, he competed in the 400 meters midweek and won gold. His Olympic racing and his Christian faith that guided him is depicted in the film, Chariots of Fire. After his Olympic victory, he returned

to China to serve as a missionary. There he died in a Japanese civilian internment camp in 1945.

John Hurt is a WPC member. He was a professor of European History at the University of Delaware for 45 years, specializing in early modern French history and

military history. He edited and published in collaboration with Steven Sidebotham, “Odyssey of a Bombardier: the

POW Log of Richard M. Mason,”.
