ORDER OF WORSHIP June 21, 2020 – 8:00/9:00/10:00/11:00 a.m. Third Sunday After Pentecost Theme: The Gathering of the Father’s Children As We Gather In the USA, in July 1908 a local church held a memorial tribute for 362 men who died in an explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, West Virginia the previous December. A little later, Sonora Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, who was brought-up by her widowed father, started a campaign for local churches and government services to set aside a day to honor fathers. A first statewide Father’s Day was observed on July 19, 1910, and over time this date moved to the third Sunday in June and became a national event. American influence, and the desire to make Father’s Day a secular event, has seen this tradition adopted in a number of other countries, and today approximately 2/3 of the countries which mark Father’s day do so on this date. In other countries, it is celebrated on various days often in March or May. (From Liturgy Tools.net) Prayer Before Worship We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives. Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail. We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed. This Fa- ther’s Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways - both big and small - they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches and the women of our families. For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You. In Your Holy name, O God, we pray. Amen. If you share our beliefs regarding the Lord’s Supper, we welcome you to our altar. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer or de-alcoholized wine, please let the Pastor or Elder know when you are at the table. Non- communing children and adults may receive a blessing from the Pastor, indicated by folding your arms across your chest as a sign you are not communing. Prelude Rick Helderop, piano Opening Hymn Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day. 2. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in Thee. 3. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ, our Brother - all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine. Order of Service for Holy Communion P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgive- ness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. C: And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. P&C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto Thee all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended Thee and justly deserved Thy temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray Thee of Thy bound- less mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Gospel Announcement Response: Glory be to Thee, O Lord! Gospel Reading Matthew 26:17-30 (The Lord’s Supper) On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said so.” While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, say- ing, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Response: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. Sermon Hymn Faith of our Fathers 1. Faith of our fathers! Living still in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword: O how our hearts beat high with joy whene’er we hear that glorious word. Refrain: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death! 2. Our fathers, chained in prisons dark, were still in heart and conscience free: How sweet would be their children’s fate, if they like them could die for Thee. The Distribution of Holy Communion h The wafers are in plastic bags with 1 to 3 wafers in each bag. h The wine is in individual plastic containers with lids. h Each family unit will be invited forward by an usher to receive the elements after they are blessed. h We will have two tables to serve two groups at a time. h Pastor or Elder (masked) will bring the appropriate count of the elements to the table. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer or de-alcoholized wine, please let the Pastor or Elder know when you are at the table. You will then proceed to serve yourself the Body and Blood of Christ. h Once done, you will take plastic bags and the containers with lids and place them in the receptacle that will be near the tables and you will go back to your seats. h We will do this in a most reverent manner. I know it will seem strange to cel- ebrate the Eucharist in such a different way than we are accustomed, but our goal is to be as safe as we can and not put anyone’s health in jeopardy. h If you do not feel comfortable receiving communion then please do not come forward. We want our worship environment to feel safe for all.

Closing Hymn Children of the Heavenly Father(favorite hymn of Stephanie Raezler and Denise McNaughton)

1. Children of the heav’nly Father safely in His bosom gather; Nestling bird nor star in heaven such a refuge e’er was given.

2. God His own doth tend and nourish, in His holy courts they flourish; From all evil things He spares them, in His mighty arms He bears them.

so if you would like to be added to the email distri-bution list please email us at offi [email protected]. If you would like a physical copy of the June Lamp, printed copies are available outside the door of the Town Square (West Entrance).

There is a stack of the new Portals of Prayer on a small table outside the door of the Town Square (west entrance) for anyone who wish-es to pick one up. You can also go on www.cph.org and read the portals of prayer devotion each day during the covid-19 shutdown.

VIRTUAL VBS RECAPWe had an amazingly unique week of VBS this year! Redeemer’s Virtual VBS 2020 had 196 children participate which is so wonder-ful. The kids enjoyed lessons, drama skits,

crafts and snacks all while at home. We had a series of vid-eos for them to watch and sent home crafts and some snack supplies in a cute bag. We were very happy we could provide a program to the kids who now more than ever need the re-minder that they are loved by not only family but most of all by God. The kids walked through the books of Acts and learned some wonderful lessons about how Jesus and God can help us do hard things, give us hope, help us be bold, let us live forever and help us be good friends. A huge thank you to my team of directors as well as those who put togeth-er music, drama, snacks and taught. We are a very bless-ed congregation with so many amazingly talented people.

If you lose a loved one at this time, we are once again using the sanctuary for funeral & memorial services and limiting it to 100 people. Please contact the church offi ce or the Pastors to make arrangements.

FAMILY OF GODFamily of God is Serving Detroit throughout the Pandemic! Family of God continues to provide dinners to those in need 6 days a week during the virus outbreak! If you’d like to see a spotlight of FOG’s service to Detroit during these trying times, please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUplxDQr2DE&feature=emb_title. As a con-gregation, Redeemer has also continued to provide meals for FOG. Redeemer has delivered 5 meals to FOG since the “Stay at Home” order began, and we’ve done it in diff erent ways! The families of Redeemer’s Positive Parenting group, along with other wonderful volunteers, made casseroles, baked goods, sandwiches, and salads in their own homes. Laura went around town and picked up all of the goodies (no contact, porch pick-up!) and then dropped them off in Detroit. Lau-ra enjoyed seeing the smiling faces of the kids through the windows as she picked up food from their porches! Families worked together to make parts of the meal – while mom made a casserole, the kids helped make a batch of baked goods! Children even made “notes of encouragement” that FOG will pass out to those receiving meals! All food delivered is immediately packed into "to go" containers and handed out with blankets, fabric masks, coff ee - whatever is needed. RYG has brought down and served three hot meals. About 80-100 trays are served every night! If you’d like to help out with Family of God in the future (donating money, helping with the meal, etc.) please contact the church offi ce.
