ON THE OHALK OF Y ORK SHIRE.

There are special reasons wby a communication on th e Ohalk ofYorkshire should be addressed to tile Members of th e Geologists'Associati on. In the first place one of the earl iest of th eir pub­lished papers, that of th e Rev. T. Wilt shire, " On the Red Chalkof En gland," deals with one of the most int eresting portions ofth e subj ect. In th e second place, one of the most recent -snd,perhaps, the most important of th e additions to our knowledge ofit has been made by a French geologist- Dr. Barrois-who visitedthe county in company with the members of the excursion par ty toYorkshire two years ago : and in the third and most import ant place,it is to a Member of thi s Association, Mr. R. Mortimer, of Fimber,who, for seventeen years, bas been steadily accumulating th e fossilsof a Chalk reported uufossiliferous, that a very larg e portion of
