Who are We?
Diversity is a big part of college life. We meet and work with people from all walks of life, many ethnicities and religions and gender orientations. Who are you? Write a poem we can share in class.
I am…poemThe only rule for the piece is that each line must start with the phrase "I am..." You may wish to include statements about where you're from regionally, ethnically, religiously, etc., memories from different points in your life, interests and hobbies, mottos or credos, favorite phrases, family traditions and customs, and whatever else defines who you are.
Sample I am…poemI am mom, wife, sister, daughter, teacher, thinker.I am covering my ears when anyone in my house yells.I am pretending to be asleep on Sunday morning to avoid going to Mass.I am speaking Swedish, snowboarding, sky-diving, and serving coffee at 30,000 feet.I am spending all of my money on travelling.I am practical, logical, a wannabe risk-taker.I am “we’ll see”, “there’s always tomorrow”, “keep looking and you will find it”I am Cottonwood, Fairview, Olympic, UW and ODU.I am a people-pleasing, non-confrontational, peace-maker.I AM OC.-Kim
Write your “I am…” poem below. Write at least 10 lines.

ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Downing Self –AssessmentYou will complete this during General Studies 101 and again at the end of the program. You will be given an assignment asking you to compare the two assessments.
2. ADVISOR CONTACT (This must also be turned in by email):
One of the most important things we want you to understand is the importance of the advising process and educational planning. For this assignment, you must provide evidence that you have contacted an advisor for help planning your classes at OC. It can be any advisor, but if you have selected a major at OC, it is recommended that you see your faculty advisor.“Evidence” of advisor contact can be one of the following:
An email to you from your advisor in which you communicate about your program, schedule an appointment, or discuss educational planning. Forward a copy of that email to your GEN-S 101 instructor: [email protected].
Get a signature from your advisor verifying that you met with him/her in person in the Advising Office or on campus, or that you have an upcoming appointment. Scan it and email it to me ([email protected]).
Your faculty advisor is specific to your program of study.
You can determine your faculty advisor by looking at this website:
