Original Shaker

Shaker furniture is a distinctive style of furniture developed by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as Shakers, a religious sect that had guiding principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. Their beliefs were reflected in the well-made furniture of minimalist designs.

Furniture was made thoughtfully, with functional form and proportion. Rather than using ornamentation, such as inlays, carvings, metal pulls, or veneers which was seen as prideful or deceitful, they developed "creative solutions such as asymmetrical drawer arrangements and multipurpose forms to add visual interest." Furniture was made of cherry, maple or pine lumber, which was generally stained or painted.

Many examples of Shaker furniture survive and are preserved today, including such popular forms as Shaker tables, chairs, rocking chairs and cabinets. The underlying principles of Shaker design have given inspiration to some of the finest designers of modern furniture.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to browse through our brochure and price list.

During site visits I meet hundreds of customers and its really interesting to hear their stories. The kitchen process can begin with a new house build, a renovation, an extension or perhaps a broken down cooker or fridge.

Once the decision has been made to purchase a new kitchen, the one common thread that customers mention is the bewildering choice available to them. Not only is there a huge choice of places to source your kitchen from but even more confusing is the diversity of designs available to you. Classic or contemporary, fully �tted, freestanding or a mix of both?

When it comes to appliances, there’s even more decisions to be made. For example, what type of cooker best suits your needs or house style? Built-in or freestanding? Gas or induction? Four or �ve cooking zones, single oven, double oven, combination oven/microwave, steamer, pyrolytic self-cleaning, infrared grills, rotisserie - and that’s just the cooker. It really is quite mind-boggling!

If you go to a high street design studio, the chances are their designers will be commission based, so keen to �t as many cabinets in as possible. Alternatively, you might �nd the choice available is limited to just one door style and only available in a few colours. You’ll also �nd that there’s a limited range of cabinet widths and interiors available - you’ll be expected to make compromises all along the way in order to �t in with their o�ering.

No such restrictions with us! We o�er a huge range of options that ensures your kitchen is totally unique and not full of �ller panels. If you want a Raspberry Pink island - no problem! We’ve supplied a few of them to customers in Scotland, Hertfordshire and even Sydney, Australia.

Con�dence in our cabinetry is guaranteed and by going to extreme measures you can be reassured that your kitchen will give you decades of reliable service.

Doors, drawer fronts, cabinet frames and drawer boxes are constructed from a knot-free Hardwood whilst the carcass uses a hardwood veneered plywood for maximum strength.

To ensure years of reliable service we use only the very best components. For example, easy-glide soft-close drawer runners are all sourced from Germany. Even wall cabinets get the heavy-duty treatment with hangers that can take up to 260kg (that’s equivalent to 40 Stones per cabinet).

Shelves are constructed from high grade plywood and �tted using an in�nitely adjustable recessed shelving system to maximize your storage space.

We’d be only too pleased to show you around and introduce you to the carpenters and joiners who will be constructing your kitchen - unlike other kitchen companies with workshops in China or Vietnam! We think that you’ll be impressed.

There’s nothing quite like actually seeing something being produced. Whether itsWalkers, who produce over 5 million packets of crisps a day or a blacksmith at workforging a horseshoe, the creation of a product is an endearing sight. Our team ofjoiners would love to meet you and show you �rst-hand the craftsmanship required to create an Original Shaker handmade kitchen.

Speak to them and you’ll see the pride and passion that goes into every pieceof furniture we create.

Doors are mortise and tenoned, then pinned and glued to guarantee maximum durability. Drawer boxes are dovetailed and glued using tulipwood with a rebated plywood base.

Carcasses and frames are assembled using biscuit-joints, screws and glue (most other companies rely on only screws).

Paint FinishesThere’s no cutting corners with our paint

Some companies only apply two top coats of paint. We don’t. We spray two undercoats and then three top coats. All completed in the workshop and not painted on site as some companies do.

This saves at least a week of painters in your home and allows you to get straight into your new kitchen. its also a better �nish because its completed in a controlled environment away from dust, pets and children!

WorktopsPioneers of worktops that stand up to everyday wear and tear

Our custom built timber worktops look fabulous because we seal all the surfaces with a really tough lacquered �nish. Virtually all other companies only give them a quick coat of oil and expect you to keep applying it for many months to come. Unfortunately, its a task that inevitably never gets completed so they deteriorate.

We’ll leave it up to you to decide which surface you prefer - maintenance free or regular oiling?

FinishingNobody does it better

The majority of our kitchens are painted so we invest a lot of time and energy in ensuring every kitchen is �nished to perfection.

Our paints are all water-based (to minimise VOC emissions in your home and much kinder on the environment).

Firstly, we apply two undercoats followed by two top coats (unlike most other companies who only apply two top coats). After applying the second sprayed top coat we brush it down and then a apply a �nal coat to create an incredibly beautiful, easy to clean surface. The hand painted �nish also makes it easier to touch up (we give you plenty of spare paint just in case accidents happen).

All drawers and cabinet interiors (excluding open shelves and glazed cupboards) are spray lacquered, and �nished in a choice of clear or dark stain (unlike painted interiors, they won’t mark or scratch from saucepans and tins, etc. - making them far more durable and easier to keep clean).

Original Shaker timber worktops get the same treatment (cut to size option only) with an incredibly long-lasting �nish that only requires a damp cloth and the occasional application of Mr. Sheen - no more regular oiling!

Our twenty four standard paint colours have been carefully chosen to compliment each other and work perfectly with our classic furniture.

The paint is speci�cally formulated for the Original Shaker Company. We spray paint an undercoat that gives a smoother, superior adhesion for the next two top coats. We then hand paint and apply a �nal sparayed coat to give each piece of furniture individual character. Between each coat of paint we hand sand the surface to apply maximum paint durability.

Should you wish to choose an alternative colour, we can colour match any colour of your choice for a surcharge of 10%.

Wooden Worktops

Wooden worktops are constructed from staves. A stave is a solid section of timber; as such, solid wood worktops are constructed from a number of staves. Variations in stave size and length change the appearance of the work surface.

Staved WorktopsThese worktops use random length 40mm wide staves that are jointed end-to-end using a ‘�nger joint’, which creates a strong connection. It is called a �nger joint as it looks like interlocked �ngers, and combines inherent friction with a small amount of glue to create a long-lasting and incredibly tough join.

Full Stave WorktopsFull stave worktops are an imposingly beautiful feature, showcasing the deep tones and delicate grain of the wood as no other construction could, ensuring your work surfaces will be a real centrepiece.

Staves of timber are 90-120mm wide and run the full length of the worktop. Full length staves eliminate �nger joints so you have continuous planks of timber running the full length of your worktop up to 4 metres long (depending on timber selected).

Timber worktops are available either un�nished in full lengths or cut to size with a lacquered �nished.

Un�nished WorktopsBefore your wooden worktops are installed, you must coat all surfaces with at least three layers of protective oil (the end grains will require more). We suggest using Rustins Danish Oil to achieve the best �nish. Following installation re-oil your worktops once a week for the �rst six weeks, and then every three months hereafter. Full instructions will be provided with your order.

Lacquered WorktopsWe recommend lacquered worktops because they are almost maintenance free. The sealed lacquered �nish only requires a damp cloth and then dried with a clean tea towel. We recommend using a standard furniture polish such as Mr. Sheen for extra protection.

Lacquered �nish worktops are only available if we fabricate them for you. You will still be required to scribe ends that butt up to a wall and the rear of cabinets. Walls might not be 90 degrees so corner joints may require trimming when installed.

We recommend ordering countertops over depth to take into account walls that are not straight - please note that specialist tools (e.g. router) are required to cut wooden worktops. We do not accept responsibility for worktops that do not �t exactly to walls and recommend that splashbacks are �tted to help disguise any possible gaps.

For peace of mind we recommend using experienced kitchen installers to cut and �t wooden worktops that require scribbing or mitring.

Stone Worktops

We can supply granite, composite and quartz countertops with your kitchen order. Granite cold slabs can also be �tted into larder cupboards on request.

GraniteGranite has a rich beauty that few other countertop materials can match. It is a natural product with a timeless aura and appeal. Granite is a very hard substance and is not susceptible to scratches. It also resists heat, so its use near a range or cooktop is ideal. When you have to set down a hot pan fast, granite can take the heat without

being damaged or weakened. Granite can be very resistant to stains and won’t absorb liquids when it is sealed.

Composite/QuartzComposite and quartz countertops are essentially the same. Both use a mix of ground stone and resins or silicone to create ultra smooth and very hardwearing surfaces. Most composite and quartz tops are available in gloss or matt �nish. Being a man-made product, it o�ers greater consistancy than granite whilst maintaining similar attributes. Our favourite surfaces and highly recommended.

They create your kitchen from scratch (unlike some companies who either manufacture their kitchens in the Far East or contract out the mass production of components to di�erent manufacturers and only assemble the cabinets in-house). You will be more than welcome to see your kitchen being crafted by one of our joiners.

How long does it take to deliver a kitchen once ordered?We work to a twelve week delivery schedule from the recipt of your deposit. Customers sometimes ask us to deliver 3-12 months in the future - this guarantees your delivery slot and price (including any appliances purchased from us). Should you not be ready to take delivery, please let us know six weeks in advance so that we can reschedule delivery and installation (if we are �tting your kitchen).

Do we charge for our design service?No - our policy is not to charge you for our designers to visit your home or their design services. We think that its up to us to prove to you that we are the very best company to design and supply your new kitchen. Give Original Shaker the honour of allowing us to visit you and you’ll soon realise its time and e�ort well spent.

Do we have a sale that just so happens to be ending later in the month and keep hounding you to place a deposit to ‘secure’ the ‘deal’?In a word no! We will never keep chasing you up for your order, instead preferring to wait for you to contact us - customers regularly take many months to �nalise an order and the last thing you’ll want is for us to keep calling you. A recent custom-er took over six years to �nalise their order - quite a long time to be waiting for a new kitchen but well worth the wait!

Taking The First StepsWhere do you start your journey?

With such a bewildering choice of kitchen cabinets, appliances, sinks, taps and countertops, it can be di�cult to know where to begin.

We recommend visiting a number of kitchen showrooms to understand the variety of styles and designs available. Take a close look at the cabinet construction, �nishing and options.

Ask lots of questions - where are the kitchens made? Are they hand-crafted or mass produced? What range of cabinets and styles are available? Will my new kitchen be similar to other friend’s kitchens?

Example of the Design Process

Comprehensive Site Survey

Customers often compliment how quickly we interpret their requirements. We’ve created a 36 page site survey questionnaire that covers every aspect of all the cabinet �nishing options, appliances, sinks, taps, worktops and handle options.On request, we will mail you a copy together with a Wish List - more questions but it gives our designers an in-depth understanding of your requirements and expectations.

Our experienced designers (they each have an average of 25 years in the kitchen design and manufacturing industry), use the completed questionnaires to create a detailed design and quotation.

Unlike other companies we do not expect you to visit our showroom to view the kitchen design. Instead, we email and post you copies of everything. We’ll then leave you to consider our recommended design in the comfort and surroundings of your own home. With a few revisions we will have created the ultimate dream kitchen for you.

We promise not to pester you with calls and emails. We prefer to let the quality, design and price speak for itself. When you’re ready to order, simply call us and we’ll arrange for one of our designers to visit you. We will check all the measurements and bring along any samples you’d like to see in your kitchen.

After receipt of the deposit, we can supply you with comprehensive services plans (worktop sockets, appliance electrics, lighting and plumbing plans). Delivery and installation dates (if we are �tting) will also be con�rmed.

Shaker furniture is a distinctive style of furniture developed by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as Shakers, a religious sect that had guiding principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. Their beliefs were reflected in the well-made furniture of minimalist designs.

Furniture was made thoughtfully, with functional form and proportion. Rather than using ornamentation, such as inlays, carvings, metal pulls, or veneers which was seen as prideful or deceitful, they developed "creative solutions such as asymmetrical drawer arrangements and multipurpose forms to add visual interest." Furniture was made of cherry, maple or pine lumber, which was generally stained or painted.

Many examples of Shaker furniture survive and are preserved today, including such popular forms as Shaker tables, chairs, rocking chairs and cabinets. The underlying principles of Shaker design have given inspiration to some of the finest designers of modern furniture.
