This presentation will consist of an analysis of the performance of model-based multivariable control in industry over the past two decades, followed by technical and practical rationale for a new model-less approach, and including a demo of the current state of the product on a Honeywell Experion platform.

Developing and Implementing an Alarm Philosophy and Life CycleIndustries have been aware of the need for an Alarm Philosophy and Life Cycle implementation. Through practical examples, we will discuss Alarm Philosophy challenges and gain knowledge of published Alarm Philosophy guidelines and how to incorporate them into your sites requirements and associated guidelines.

Alarm Rationalization has also proven to have its challenges as well. We will discuss and share our experiences and solutions to provide an efficient method to resolve these challenges in Alarm Management projects. Design and implementation of advanced alarming techniques will be discussed in relation to different DCS platform capabilities.

Many of those individuals responsible for auditing, installing, or operating industrial control systems are aware of the need for cyber security, yet are confused on exactly what to implement and how to verify the resulting solution. This topic provides a solid foundation in addressing these concepts.

Task Analysis, Hierarchies, and HMI Layout DesignToday’s challenges in HMI design not only encompass how to interpret P&IDs to develop meaningful operating graphics, but also what are the main pieces of “Information” needed. The operator needs to quickly and easily detect this “Information” and determine the proper meaning with accuracy and perform proper corrective actions.

In this session, discussion and guidance will be provided to properly identify hierarchy structure and what process should be utilized to design the necessary HMI displays. This will include such topics as Task Analysis, Mental Model Process, Storyboarding, and CADET Process.

L&A Advanced TricksThis presentation will focus on so-called “tricks of the trade” pertaining to our experiences with the many DCS’ we work with. We will show some practical demonstration techniques with regards to database configuration challenges and solutions, HMI techniques, best practices, and DCS system design guidelines.

Allan KernControl Engineering Consultant

Allan Kern has 35 years of process control experience. He has authored numerous papers on topics ranging from field instrumentation, safety systems and loop tuning, to multivariable control, inferential control and expert systems, with special emphasis on practical solutions in a plant operation context. Mr. Kern is retired and continues to work as an independent consultant. He is the inventor of XMCTM, a model-less multivariable control and optimization technology, and has partnered with Lin & Associates to develop this product. Mr. Kern has professional engineering licenses in control systems and chemical engineering, is a senior member of ISA, and is a graduate of the University of Wyoming.

Rob AllenVice President of Operations, Lin & Associates, Inc

Rob Allen graduated with a BSEET from DeVry Institute of Technology in 1991, and began his career at BP’s Lima, Ohio refinery. In 2004, Rob joined the Lin & Associates team as a Senior Control Engineer. He was subsequently promoted to Principal Control Engineer and is currently the Vice President of Operations.

Joel Langill

Joel Langill is an Industrial Cyber Security Expert possessing over 30 years of field experience, and is the founder of the globally recognized website SCADAhacker.com. He brings a unique perspective to industrial security having spent over three decades deploying ICS solutions covering most major industry sectors in more than 35 countries encompassing all generations of automated control from pneumatic to cloud-based services. He has been directly involved in the specification and design of automation solutions spanning front-end engineering design, detailed design, system integration, commissioning, support and legacy system migration. Joel currently provides a range of services to ICS end-users, system integrators, governmental agencies worldwide, and works closely with suppliers in both consulting and R&D roles. He has developed a specialized training curriculum focused on applied ICS security. He served as co-author and technical editor for several books on industrial security. Joel serves on the Board of Directors for the Milwaukee Chapter of InfraGard, and is an ICS research focal point to numerous CERT organizations around the world. Joel was an active contributor to the research conducted relating to several ICS cyber campaigns including Stuxnet, Heartbleed and Havex, and was credited with several coordinated disclosures on the subject.

Eric LeBlancVice President of Technology, Lin & Associates, Inc

Eric LeBlanc became the Vice President of Technology at Lin & Associates in 2006, and is currently managing different aspects of the business, such as product devel-opment, project management, and marketing and sales. Eric holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Chemical Engineering with emphasis in Nuclear and Power Plant Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, in Canada.


Ian Nimmo is President and a founder of User Centered Design Services, an Abnormal Situation Management service provider. He served 10 years as a Senior Engineering Fellow and a founder and Program Director for the NIST Research Program, ASM Consortium. Before joining Honeywell, he worked for 25 years for Imperial Chemical Industries in the U.K. as an instrument/electrical engineer and computer applications manager. He has specialized in computer control safety for seven years and has extensive experience in batch control and continuous operations. He developed control hazard operability methodology (ChazOp) during his time at ICI and has written over 100 papers and contributed to several books on the subject. He recently released the High Performance HMI Handbook. He is the Chairman of the Research Consortium for the Center for Human Factors & Ergonomics. He studied electrical and electronic engineering at Teesside (U.K.) University. He is a member of the Institute of NSPE, a Fellow member of the ISA, Member of Society HFE, and Member IET CEI.
