Passings
Cleo Poulios, Fell asleep in the Lord on May 3rd
The Family of Cleo Poulios would like to Thank You all for your sincere condolences, cards, flowers and
donations made to St. Sophia in her memory.
The first thing Jesus says to His disciples who were in hiding following the crucifixion and resurrec-tion is, "Peace be with you." He says it twice! It is in this same gathering that the disciples re-ceive the Holy Spirit and Jesus once again "sends" them on a mis-sion. On Pentecost we are re-minded by the Church that we are commis-sioned to take Jesus Christ with us and introduce Jesus wherever we go. As our own Archbishop stated to the Church of America…”You are the voice of Christ in a fallen world.” We cannot do this until we have the “peace” of the Lord. Many of us are not at peace. We're fractured, confused and just as muddled as were the disciples. This peace is a call to wholeness so that we might be equipped to bring Jesus to the world. As we read in Acts 2, on the day of Pentecost, the apostles were all together in the city of Jerusalem. "Suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.” The apostles began to cause amazement and astonishment among the people gathered in Jerusalem. This crowd heard the apostles using a variety of languages, "speaking about God's deeds of power." But not everyone was impressed -- some sneered and said that the apostles were "filled with new wine." The apostle Peter took a bold stand in front of the crowd and told them that the coming of the Spirit was a fulfillment of ancient prophecy.
This Spirit inaugurated the birth of the Church of Jesus Christ, the beginning of a new era, one in which "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (v. 21). On that Pentecost the Church was born and expanded throughout the world. Like the first disciples we must be at peace and filled with the Spirit in order to be the voice of Christ. The Bible tells us that the apostles were able to do what they did
because "all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit" (v. 4). Without the inspiration of the Spir-it, we're never going to get off the ground. We get the Spirit first and foremost in worship. We pray for the Holy Spirit to help us hear God's Word. We can ask for the Spirit to heal, touch and transform us. We can trust the Spirit to make Christ present to us in the bread and cup of Communion. Worship is not a mere hu-man activity; instead, it is an activity that is both human and divine, with Jesus really present through the power of the Holy Spirit. Read this first prayer of many of our worship services; O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth: You are everywhere filling all things; Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One! Inspired by the Spirit we can embark on a mission of sharing good news with people around us. In Jerusalem, Peter stood up and promised that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (v. 21). He gave his hearers a message of inclusion and hope. While we may not join Peter in preaching on street corners, we can follow his lead by knocking on doors of the hearts of our family and friends and build relationships based on authentic concern.

The Gospel of Mark
Although the touch of Jesus holds the power to heal and transform, only those who believe find their lives truly changed. This 6-week study, Jesus: Listening for His Voice, examines the Gospel of Mark, chapters 7 to 13 to discover not only what Jesus did, but also what he said. Experience for yourself the freedom and the power that comes from knowing truth and living accordingly.

AHEPA NEWS FROM THE NEW LONDON
WINTHROP CHAPTER 250
The local chapters of AHEPA along with all the chapters of District Seven of AHEPA throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island are preparing to offer scholarships to young people. The Order is also preparing to offer thousands of dollars to disserving non-profit organizations in South-eastern Connecticut. These two key activities are often not reported in the local news me-dia and consequently many people do not know what AHEPA does for the local community.
In view of all these activities that AHEPA offers to the community it is very appropriate that the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has set aside one Sunday a year as AHEPA SUN-DAY. This year the Sunday of AHEPA has been designated as May 21. It is significant to mention as the Archbishop writes: “For almost a century this has been the focus of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. AHEPA Sunday is des-ignated to offer our gratitude to the members of the AHEPA family. He says that the leaders of AHEPA are faithful servants of God as leaders in their parishes, in the institutions and organiza-tions of the Church, and use the strength and mission of AHEPA to meet local needs throughout the world. Because of these reasons we call upon all young men in Southeastern Connecticut to come and join this great organization that serves its fellow man throughout the world.

PARISH OUTREACH
IN NEW LONDON “The Orthodox Church is often accused of neglecting the world for the sake of liturgical worship and spiritual life, turning primarily toward the Kingdom of God to come, disregarding challenges of the present. In fact, however, whatever the Church says, whatever the church does, is done in the Name of God and the sake of human dignity and the eternal destiny of the human being. It is impossible for the Church to close its eyes to evil, to be indifferent to the cry of the needy, oppressed and exploited. True faith is a course of permanent struggle against the power of inhumanity.”
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

The base from which we serve as the Voice of Christ in a Changing World is the parish. A strong parish provides opportunities for shar-ing the Good News of Christ, for welcoming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a base from which we are sent out into the world. The parish also provides a place for worship, community and education in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel, we need to be stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspiration to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We are called to offer our-selves and our treasure to make our local church all that is can be.
Please remember that St. Sophia is uniquely our responsibility and we need to help today for our Future !
Be a Steward of Saint Sophia in 2017!
ADOPT A BILL! This is how it works! In the lobby of the Church is a bulletin board with a number of bills the church needs to pay. You are invited to chose a bill you would like to pay. Write a check out to Saint Sophia for the indicated amount and return the bill and check to the church office. This contribution is tax deductible but separate from your annual Stewardship donation.
We thank the following parishioners that have contributed since May 2017
Amy Antipas
Stewardship We would like to thank you for your continued support to-wards the Saint Sophia Stewardship Ministry. Your contribu-tion of valuable time, spirit of volunteerism, service to our parish and generous financial support is the definition of Christian Stewardship. Your love for our spiritual family is the impetus that leads to our spiritual efforts for the continual betterment of our parish.
We are writing to introduce and hopefully gain your support for our new stewardship challenge. As you know, personal stewardship contributions range anywhere from $1 to an un-limited amount, which you are free to determine at will. Our proposed stewardship challenge is designed to help us learn to become better stewards.
3-Year Stewardship Step-Up Challenge We challenge each of our stewards
to increase their stewardship pledge by incremental amounts over the next 3 years.
We are proposing that for the next 3-years
these increases would look like this:
2017 Increase over 2016 pledge - 3% 2018 Increase over 2017 pledge - 4% 2019 Increase over 2018 pledge - 5%
If you pledged $500 in 2016,
we ask you to increase this by 3% your 2017 pledge would be $515
If you pledged $1,200 in 2016,
we ask you to increase this by 3% your 2017 pledge would be $1,236
If you pledged $1,500 in 2016,
we ask you to increase this by 3% your 2017 pledge would be $1,545
