B A S K E T B A L LThrow Ins - New rules in basketball will also no longer grant free throws to the defending team in the bonus if the throw -in team commits a foul.

The rule now states that when an opponent contacts the thrower-in, an intentional foul will be charged to the offender. The defender will not have to have broken the plane to be charged with an intentional foul.

offIcIaTIng changes a. Changes to the Basketball Rule book now extends the clerical duties of officials beyond the end of the game through the completion of any reports required from actions that occurred while the of- ficials had jurisdiction. b. Shot clock - a new proposal was entered to require the use of a shot clock in high school basketball, which has already been used for years. But the committee rejected the proposal due to difficulty for some schools to comply with a new rule requiring purchasing new equipment and hiring additional table personnel.

NFHS officials stated the change supports the advancement of high school diving and reflects the current trends in the varia-tions of the forward approach and the athleticism of today’s high school divers.

order of dIvers In champIonshIp meeTs In addition to determining the order by lot, the meet director has the option of seeding based on the diver’s best com-petitive 11-dive score submitted. If the seeding is done by dive scores, divers without 11 dive scores will be seeded by lot at the beginning of the diving order.

flyIng dIves Flying dives now demonstrating 1.5 inch somersaults require the straight position to be maintained until the body has rotated to the vertical position. The degree of difficulty for three twisting dives were also changed. See the NFHS rules on diving for more specific details.

swImmIng pools – new changes beginning this year to the starting procedure for pools with a water depth of less than 4 feet and at least 3.5 feet.

Swimmers must now start in the water rather than from the deck in pools with 3.5 to 4 feet of water. NFHS officials say changes to the procedure reduces risk and reflects current trends. This is a more appropriate starting restriction in water with a depth of less than 4 feet and at least 3½ feet. The rule change does not require any change in equipment.

W r e s t l i n g For the first time in over two decades, the weight class in wrestling has been changed. The change move the 103 pound class to 106 pounds resulting in new weights for 10 classes. The change in weight classes resulted from a three-to-four year process utilizing data from the National Wrestling Coaches As-sociation Optimal Performance Calculator to analyze data from almost 200,000 wrestlers across the country. With the new changes, the goal is to create weight classes that have approximately seven percent of the wrestlers in each weight class.

dIvIng – The forward approach in diving now allows for divers to use additional steps, hops, leaps and/or jumps in between the initial three steps and the jump off. The forward takeoff shall be from both feet simultaneously to an adequate height to perform the dive.
