This summer Oulu hosts the Finnish Championships in Athletics as well as The European Disc Golf Championships. The city hosts every year more than 700 different events and

experiences! The surrounding marine habitat, the beautiful river estuary and the compelling northern light create a unique environment that invites you to spend an

active city holiday and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Oulu invites you to enjoy genuine experiences in the Museum and Science Centre Luuppi, to visit the gorgeous sandy beaches in Nallikari, do some shopping in downtown Oulu

24-27 August 2016. About 200 participants in six different categories are taking part in the European Disc Golf Championships held in Oulu. The city is an unofficial capital of disc

golf due to many local enthusiasts and a number of disc golf courses.

Take a picture of yourself together with the famous Toripolliisi statue depicting a

big-bellied policeman. Buy local delicacies and handicraft products in the market hall.

Oulu covers more than 650 km of beautiful cycling paths and routes.

Rent a bike for a day and find your own route around the city lakes, the river and

Nallikari beach Nallikarinranta The long sandy beach in Nallikari attracts thousands of sunbathers in the summer. It is almost a “living room” for locals and an excellent spot to spend the day on the beach. In the summer, the beach is filled with roller-skaters, cyclists, and beach volley and football enthusiasts as well as families with children who enjoy the playground area. The restaurant Nallikari is open in the summer and the landmark Majakka (Lighthouse) houses a café and a water sports centre.

During the eight summers that the sauna has been operating, more than 3,500 guests from 35 different countries have experienced the floating sauna. The sauna is run by a group of some 70 volunteers.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONSSanginjoki forest www.visitoulu.fiSanginjoki forest is a vast forest and camping area northeast from Oulu about 20 km from the city centre. There are marked trails and huts where one can have a campfire and have something to eat.

Pilpasuo www.visitoulu.fi/fi/aktiviteetitPilpasuo is a large and almost entirely unditched mire in Eastern Oulu. It is protected by the national wetlands conservation pro-gramme and the Natura 2000 programme. The Pilpasuo mire has for the most part developed on an ancient seaside meadow (3000 years old). The mire basin is in the old bed of the River Oulu.

It’s easy to explore the area on foot by following marked paths. There are also several places for making a campfire. In the summer, firewood can be found in the shed. There’s also a summer café on Sahasaari island that serves hikers throughout the whole summer.

The site has altogether 154 places for caravans with electricity points, commons rooms, saunas, a playground for kids, laundry facilities as well as a beach. In Virpiniemi ani-mal sports area houses an active centre for horseback riding and greyhound racing.

The fireplace shelter in the grounds is an ideal place to enjoy a snack and then head off to a bird-watching tower some 600 meters away.

The rivers that cut the Oulu region as well as the Bay of Bothnia offer numerousspots for fishing. For example, the nearly 180 km long Kiiminkijoki, Sanginjoki, Iijoki and Oulujoki are amongst favourites of many fishermen. Oulu hosts more than 700 different events annually. The summer is full of activities for all ages! In May, the Terva Run and Marathon and Rock the

North Festival open the season that in September culminates with Oulu Festival Weeks and the Time Tunnel. Also, the metal music festival

Jalometalli is celebrating its 15th anniversary this summer. There’s plenty going on for music lovers throughout the summer, but sports enthusiasts are

also taken good care of: this year in Oulu has the honor to host the European Championships in Disc Golf and the Finnish Championships in

Athletics in July.

The modern day starts have their place in the exhibition too, for example Minna Kauppi, Mika Häkkinen and Teemu Selänne – not to mention the famous ski jumper Matti Nykänen. KIERIKKI Archaeological ExhibitionPahkalantie 447 A, Yli-Iiwww.kierikki.fi The basic exhibition of the Kierikki Stone Age Centre describes life in Finland and in Kierikki during the Stone Age. Get to know the way of life, environment, tools, housing, trading and beliefs of the Stone Age. The authentic prehistoric items of the exhibition are mainly from the archaeological excavations in the Kierikki area. They prove that in the Stone Age, Kierikki was a thriving trading community. The village was recreated based on information gathered from the archaeological excavations. Similar settlements existed on the sandy banks of the river Iijoki as far back as 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. Excavations for public on 1–31 July.

It replaced the badly ruined old church that was built in the 17th century. The plans were drawn up by the mas-ter builder Matti Honka and the construction was overseen by master builder Jaakko Suonperä. The biblical paintings in the church were painted some ten years after its comple-tion by Mikael Toppelius (1734–1821). If the paintings were put in line, they would stretch some 150 meters.

It is one of the very few wooden churches in Finland that have retained their original form. The cruciform church was built by Matti Honka.
