Welcome to Our BerkshireGreen, your premier holistic resource for healthy living in Berkshire County and the surrounding area. I would like for you to think of this publication as your pub-lication... as our magazine. My hope is that with your help, we can contribute to creating a more accessible and prominent network of holistic and environmentally conscious individuals, businesses and services in our community. Our focus is Berkshire County, but we will include subject matter from outside of the area in our department “Beyond Berkshire County” that we feel is relevant and will be of value.

The concept of green, healthy and holistic living is becoming immensely popular now to everyone’s benefit. Many of us have participated in this practice in one form or another for many years, but we are not all aware of one another, and the unique and valuable products,

services and information that we each have to offer. This magazine and our website at www.OurBerkshireGreen.com), will give us our chance to connect and grow.

We believe that the easiest way to achieve our common objective to promote holistic awareness is to collaborate and freely share information. With this in mind, we have chosen to place Our BerkshireGreen Magazine, and our website under a Creative Commons License in place of a standard copyright. This Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives License, sometimes known as the “free advertising” license, allows anyone to freely copy, distribute and transmit the work,

Who We AreOur BerkshireGreen is a complimentary, tri-annual holistic magazine and resource guide (also found on the web) focused on Berkshire County, Massachusetts and the immediate surrounding area. We are a community-minded company dedicated to developing holistic awareness and creating a more accessible and prominent network of holistic and environmentally conscious individuals, businesses and services in our area.

Content & QualityWe provide our readers with informative and insightful articles on every aspect of holistic living, including alternative and integrative health, natural child care, green building, alternative energy solutions, landscape design, natural pet care, organic products and more. Each publication’s cover pays tribute to one of our talented local artists, and our alphabetical Resource Guides and handy Maps enable readers to locate the products, services and information they need… resources which they will in turn share with others. Our regular department “In Business” shines a spotlight on local business, and “Lifestyles & Perspectives” gives us the opportunity to get to know the heart of our community… its people. Finally, local contests add excitement and the Calendar of Events and Classified sections make it possible for us to network with one another. The magazine measures approximately 8.5” x 11”, and is printed with beautiful soy based ink on high quality Stewardship Council (FSC: www.fsc.org) certified paper made from trees grown in a responsible manner containing a full 30 percent post-consumer recycled wastepaper.

DistributionWe currently print three issues per year. Distribution dates begin on April 1, 2009 (April - July), August 1, 2009 (Aug. - Nov.) and December 1, 2009 (Dec. - March). Illustration Guidelines

Writing Guidelines

Editorial and Artistic Opportunities Submissions are due on or before the first day of the month prior to publication

Earlier is better and will give you the best chance of acceptance

We welcome submissions from writers and illustrators (drawings, paintings, photographs) of every level of experience. We do not

currently offer payment for accepted work, however this is an excellent opportunity to share your knowledge, talent and expertise

while bringing our readers attention to your business. All submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail. If your work is accepted for

publication you will be notified by e-mail of the publication date, and if you purchase an ad in our Resource Guide in that issue, we

will give you a full color ad for the price of a comparable size black and white ad (we will send you a gift certificate for the difference).

All accepted submissions will also be placed in our website’s online library archive. Please include full contact information, a picture

and a 25 - 100 word description of yourself and the piece that you submitted (which we maintain the right to edit) for your bio/credit

for our magazine’s “Contributors” page, if accepted. Our BerkshireGreen is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-

Commercial No Derivatives License, often called the “free advertising license”. Check out www.creativecommons.org.

We are looking for seasonal (not holiday) “holistic” theme art for our cover and as filler around content. Please do not send original

artwork. If you would like your work to be considered, please submit a copy of the piece in electronic format (300 dpi or higher).

Acceptable formats: Adobe Acrobat (high resolution PDF), Adobe Photoshop (TIFF or EPS file), Adobe Illustrator (EPS files), or

Adobe InDesign. Grayscale files for black & white, and cmyk files for color (uncoated paper). Publisher will not be responsible

for the printing quality of any artwork that is not in compliance with our specifications. Note that copies sent by disk will not be

returned and that we maintain the right to make size adjustments (cropping) as needed to make allowances for size restraints.

Submissions should be sent by e-mail as an attachment to [email protected], or placed on CD or DVD and sent by

mail (address on page 6) to Our BerkshireGreen, Inc. Please include contact information as explained above.

Length – You may submit short, interesting “tidbits” of information between 50 - 250 words, or full length articles between 250 – 1000 words (photographs must adhere to the specifications above). Articles will be printed under the appropriate category in our resource guide. If you need to condense your article to adhere to the above specifications, we will consider printing a full version of the article on our website, and can make mention of this in our magazine upon request. We will not change the context of your submission, but we maintain editorial rights to reduce the article’s length if necessary and correct grammatical and punctuation errors. If we feel that further editing is needed, we will contact you for prior approval. Content – We are looking for articles and “tidbits” that will inform, educate, enlighten, entertain and inspire our readers. For topic ideas, please look at our department headings and our resource guide categories in this media kit. Tidbits can include clips of “green” information, jokes, original cartoons, recipes, short poems, etc. Submissions for “Lifestyles and Perspectives” should be written in the first person. All other submissions should be written in the third person (preferred) or in the second person. An example of writing in the first person is: “I am holistic...” Second person: “You are holistic...” Third person: “He, she or it is holistic”. Articles must not be written as a thinly disguised ad, and it is extremely important that all submissions take an optimistic viewpoint. If serious health or environmental concerns are discussed, such as the dangers of pesticides for instance, we want positive alternative solutions offered. Our goal is to inspire, not depress our readers.Credit and permission – Please credit any outside sources and attribute all direct quotes (including graphics and images). Plagiarism is a very serious offence and we will not knowingly print anything that contains plagiarized material. Make certain that you have the permission of everyone in your photo(s) to be published in our magazine. The author is liable for any claims made against the publisher/Our BerkshireGreen, Inc. as a result of the article content and graphics supplied to the publisher.

Submissions should be sent to [email protected], in electronic format either in the body of an e-mail or as an attached Microsoft Word Document (.doc) or Portable Document Format (.pdf), with no embedded graphics. We do not accept handwritten, faxed or mailed articles.

Upon notification of acceptance, please send this signed document to Our BerkshireGreen, Inc. by mail or fax. I have read, understand and accept

the above terms and conditions, and give Our BerkshireGreen, Inc. permission to print the article and or/illustrations that I have submitted.

athy Regan (Berkshire TimeSaver) is not

just a timesaver but a lifesaver. If E.B.

White had her (this company) working for him

“Good-Bye to 48th Street” would have been a

different story – certainly an easier and more

organized transition for the author. Every

sustained business quickly outgrows its original

organizational capacity and systems and it

takes people (businesses) like Kathy (Berkshire

TimeSaver) to restore it to order and position

the company to better manage its archives

as well as its ongoing information resources.

My direct experience with this company was

overwhelmingly positive and my opinion of the

work performed by Kathy Regan is that it was

of the highest professional quality as well as

cost-effective. She is sharp, focused and

effective in scoping the work out, working with

the client and getting the job done well and

in a timely manner. I would unhesitatingly

recommend her services to anyone.

Tom O’Brien, Executive DirectorWatershed Agricultural Council of NYC Watersheds, IncFormer: Watershed Team Leader, Housatonic and Hudson Watersheds, EOEACell Phone: 607-865-7790E-mail: [email protected]

Kathy I. Regan is the founder of Our BerkshireGreen, Inc., and the publisher of Our BerkshireGreen Magazine and website. She started

her career in graphic design, but for personal reasons found it necessary in the early 1990’s to devote all of her time to studying

alternative medicine, which not only saved her life but also opened a new and fascinating world for her. An entrepreneur at

heart, Kathy started a successful local professional organizing company called Berkshire TimeSaver in 1998, working for a variety

of businesses and non-profit organizations. In 2005 Kathy and her husband were blessed with a baby girl (the child they said could

never be), so to allow for more family time she cut down her client base to just a few non-profit organizations. Kathy is now utilizing

her artistic and professional organizing skills to fulfill a long-time dream by publishing Our BerkshireGreen.

ABOUT THE PUBLISHER

y organization, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, worked with Kathy Regan

in the formative stages of LAPA-West (Lakes and Ponds Association of Western

Massachusetts). As a new organization, LAPA-West needed organizational structure and discipline

very badly. Kathy provided that structure. She came into a new situation and very quickly learned

and provided what was needed to keep the organization on track. Kathy’s work was of high quality,

was always on time and was extremely cost-effective. I would not hesitate to use her services in

similar situations.

s the former President of the Stockbridge Bowl Association (SBA), I hired Kathy to establish

the SBA archives. Ms. Regan was highly recommended to me by LAPA-West. Kathy took

more than sixty years’ worth of SBA archival materials - letters, notes on meetings, newspaper

articles, etc. - and arranged them in an orderly sequence. She accomplished this feat in a timely

and professional manner. When the work was finished, the entire collection was given to the Stockbridge

Library, which was very pleased to have such a well organized and important addition to their

collection. This archival collection is now available to other institutions facing similar problems in

lake management. Kathy Regan is someone who takes responsibility and follows through on the

job required. She is most pleasant to work with, is resourceful, innovative and accommodating to

the schedules of others. The SBA has also just recently re-hired Kathy to manage the office work

involved in our Save Stockbridge Bowl Campaign. This is a campaign to raise $2 ½ million dollars

to implement our Lake Management Program to reclaim the lake from impending eutrophication.

have been President/ Vice President of a LAPA-West (Lake and Pond Associations of Western

Massachusetts) for the past eight years or so. In this capacity I have worked with Kathy for the majority

of that time. She has provided administrative support for the organization, handled the database and

billing and helped each year on our Symposium. It is in the planning of this event the last six years that

I have worked most closely with Kathy. Our Symposium attracts about 150+ folks from lakes and ponds

throughout the region. It is a testament to Kathy’s talents, abilities and attention to details that this is

the premier event of its kind in Massachusetts. She is incredibly responsive and not only never misses a

deadline, but went out her way to make sure that I did not either.

It is my hope that LAPA-West will be lucky enough to continue our relationship with Kathy in the future as

I have no idea where we would find a replacement as capable, thorough or reliable. In her time working

for the organization I can not recall of any officer/board member not being satisfied with her work. I

realize that this may all seem too good to be true. However as I look back on what I have written, I am

very comfortable with every word.
