    PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

    Chuck Cooley

    “Rubber on the Road”

    The rain has returned after a great September. October still should provide for some nice cruising days to wineries and Washington fruit stands as well as to local eating establishments. Have you ever had a FAT Smitty’s burger located on Hwy 101 at Discovery Bay? Unbelievable… be prepared to share. If you have a favorite place to eat or a destination that would include a drive, send out an email to invite members to join you. You will be surprised with the participation. Our website is back in business and has been updated with current information. Many thanks to Cherlene who volunteered to step in and provide website support for Carl. Sally Kane has stepped forward to coordinate a Christmas “Toys for Tots” venue with Grey Chevrolet that will include a caravan to Grey Chevrolet. It’s great that we have members who step up and volunteer for the betterment of the club. Speaking of volunteers …an event planning meeting is scheduled November 12 at Bud And Cherlene’s …we need volunteers to plan and lead cruises as well as input into potential 2012 events. Lots of ideas come forth but we need hosts for the events, so please plan to attend, bring ideas and volunteer to host an event. A 2012 Northwest caravan to Bowling Green is being planned to depart Seattle on September 8, 2012. We will be asking for a list of those interested in participating…no commitment required at this time just an idea for number interested. Events in October to plan for are: “Vettes for Vets” on October 8th led by Gary Powell; Game night at Larry and Ida Ficca October 15; Progressive Dinner October 29; and Highway cleanup October 29. Lastly…our raffle prize table is getting a bit bare…we have a few members who donate on a regular basis. Please bring a raffle donation if you have not done so for some time. Also, don’t forget donations for the Battered Women’s box. Support our club sponsors… Grey Chevrolet, Team Sports, Firestone Tire (Wheaton Way) and Benchmark Auto. Hope to see all of you at our October 6th meeting.

    GAME NIGHT AT THE DRAKES By Cherlene Golitz

    As we arrived, we didn't see many Corvettes. After the start time, Drake called Bill & Patti to ask where they were. Dinner began with 5 members. The lasagna was great, with crisp and cool salad and a tasty bread. The chocolate, caramel, nut tarts were hard to resist . . . especially when you were having a difficult time getting the cards you wanted - Comfort Food! We decided to play Hand and Foot with each of us playing as an individual rather than the usual teams. What FUN and what a challenge that ended up being. It was hard to get books . . . for most of us. After playing two hands, Bud had less than half the score of any of the other four members. The next hand Bud did well. The fourth hand he romped all over the rest of the members to win. We played from about 8 PM until just before midnight. No one was willing to even think of quitting. It was a fun evening filled with great fellowship and lots of laughter. Thank You Drake and Becky for hosting a fun Game Night.

    Drake to Bill & Patti~ Where are you?

    LOL one very serious Bud and a laughing Larry

    Getting settled in to a long game of Hand and

    Foot

    Dinner is served !

    The front door was accidentally left open and our dog was gone. After unsuccessfully whistling and calling, my husband got in the car and went looking for him.

    He drove around the neighborhood for some time with no luck. Finally he stopped beside a couple out for a walk and asked if they had seen our dog.

    "You mean the one following your car ?" they asked.

    DOG GONE!

    From the Editor: I would like to thank GOCC and its members for the support and condolences when my Mom passed away. It was very much appreciated. Bless you all, Harry Calhoun

    The 2011 Kingfisher Award will be presented to Sara and Byron Kane at our May meeting. This annual award is Kitsap Audubon’s highest honor, and is awarded to an individual or couple who have given outstanding service to Kitsap Audubon for five or more years. Recipients are selected by the previous three Kingfisher Award recipients. The Kanes became involved in early 2006, when they took over maintenance of our data base, mail lists and membership dues reminders. Byron became a member of the KAS Board in 2007 and Sara joined the Board in 2010. Byron’s technical support of our digital projector has been invaluable.

    Whenever there is work to be done, festivals, special events or projects, the Kanes are among the first to volunteer. They almost never miss a Kitsap Audubon meeting or Board meeting, and always pitch in to help. They are known for their warmth and enthusiasm, their generous spirit and their willingness to help, whether it’s sorting through the archives, staffing the Audubon booth at EcoFest, or taking responsibility for the mitten tree and food bank donations at our December program. Byron and Sara are a joy to work with and help make our meetings not only informative, but fun.

    According to research by Specialty Equipment Market Association and Experian Automotive, as of 2009, there were approximately 750,000 Corvettes of all model years registered in the United States. Corvette owners were fairly equally distributed throughout the country, with the highest density in Michigan (3.47 per 1000 residents) and the lowest density in Utah, Mississippi, and Hawaii (1.66, 1.63, and 1.53 registrations per 1000 residents). 47% of them hold college degrees (significantly above the nationwide average of 27%), and 82% are between ages of 40 and 69 (median age being 53).

    Here are a few photos' from past Vettes 4 Vets. The right one is the Line up at Bucks A & W in Port Orchard. The middle one is at Retsil after we arrive. The one on the left is us going up the hill at the Retsil after giving the Veterans a ride. The Veterans sure love the rides and we loving giving them rides.

    Last Months Question. What was the last year for Chrome Bumpers on a Corvette. The Correct answer is 1973, the 72 has Chrome on front and back, the 74 is body colored front and back, the 73 has chrome back bumpers and a body colored front end.

    Even if it does rain, GOCC still gets out and about !

    CORVETTE HEAVEN

    Turn the key and open the door; Exactly what living is for.

    Take a moment and breathe in deep;

    The smell of leather is so sweet.

    Settle in and buckle up; get ready and Fire her up;

    Excitement builds backing down the drive;

    A perfect day for fun has finally arrived.

    Escaping from the world and pressure we live in, Now entering the realm of Corvette heaven.

    All troubles vanish as we drive away; Nothing can spoil this Corvette day.

    Hardtops, convertibles, or ones with tee's, No finer a machine that anyone can see.

    Come join me in heaven, get ready, get set,

    As we will fly along in my Corvette
