*ATTENTION JUNIOR AND SENIOR PARENTS*
AFTER-PROM - What is After-Prom?
After-Prom is a parent drive organization that helps to organize fundraiser throughout the year the build money to be
given back to the Junior and Senior students that attend the April 2014 After-Prom event.
We build our bank account by 1) hosting a BAKE SALE at the Prairie Patch Craft Show in November; 2) hosting a
concession stand in December (food merchandise provided by After-Prom); 3) in January we will have a huge fund-
raising Basketball Tournament for boys and girls grades 4-6 from schools surrounding the Salina area and beyond; 4)
we will host another concession stand in February (all items are supplied by the school).
So as you can see there are plenty of opportunity for all you Junior and Senior parents to help. ALL JUNIOR and
SENIOR PARENTS are invited to the next After-Prom meeting on October 7th @ 6pm in the commons area. We
would like to invite parents to sign up for the sub-committees (such as Decoration; Food, Gifts, Games, etc) for the
actual After-Prom event to take place April 2014.
Feel free to call Marian Gagna (President) @ 785-822-5190 or email [email protected] with any questions. You
can also find us on facebook @ Southeast After prom (updated by Janet Sauber) HOPE TO SEE ALL YOU PAR-
ENTS AT OUR NEXT MEETING!

KANSAS SCHOOL SAFETY HOTLINE The Kansas Legislature has appropriated funds to assist the State Depart-ment of Education, in cooperation with the Kansas Highway Patrol, in estab-lishing a school safety hotline. This hotline is a toll free number available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year to give students, parents, and community members the opportunity to report any impending school violence. As you are aware, students usually have knowledge of potential school violence before it occurs. This hotline would give students the opportunity to anonymously re-port any potential violence. The hotline has been established and became operative August 1, 1999. The Kansas School Safety Hotline Number is 1-877-626-8203 Personnel at the Dispatch of the Kansas Highway Patrol will answer the hot-line number. The dispatchers will get as much information about each situa-tion reported as the caller wishes to relay. Upon receipt of a call, the dispatch-ers will notify appropriate law enforcement agencies and/or the office of the superintendent of schools depending upon the severity of the situation
Nutrition Basics Wellness Notes from the Kitchen! Fall weather
is surely just around the corner! With cooler temperatures and longer evenings (if not full of running around), you may be ready to make some of your favorite “comfort foods”! Many of those old-fashioned stand-by recipes here in rural Kansas are traditions made in times when folks were hard-working farm laborers, who spent hours outside doing very physical work. So...my point is...they are hardy rich dishes, usually high in fat, carbs and calories! But there are some tricks to “lighten” them up, so you can still enjoy the flavors without excess calories. Reduce the amount of regular cheeses and also sub in a low-fat versions. Sour cream can often be replaced by greek yogurt (unflavored). When recipes use sauces or gravies, choose broth based sauces rather than creamy or “drippings” gravies. Always pour the drippings/broth from roasting meat like turkey or beef into a measuring cup, let set until the fat seperates and raises to the top, them skim it off and discard, using only the lean broth for gravy! Lower fat versions of canned “cream” soups help as well. For meats, select lean cuts—round roast over chuck roast, round or flank steak over sirloin or rib eyes, pork loin over chops or shoulders. And when possible, use chicken breast instead of red meat (it usually costs less as well—but red meat is rich in iron, so don’t eliminate it completely from your diet.) Add as many vegetables to any casserole or soup that your family will still eat—sneak veggies in wherever possible-extra carrots and celery in noodle soup, extra beans and even try adding whole grains like barley or rice to increase the nutri-tional value and may even lower calories/serving! In baked goods, at least part of the oil can be replaced by applesauce and yogurt, and use at least part whole grain flour to boost fiber! Just experiment, don’t point things out to your family and see if they even notice that your new comfort foods are healthier and still their “favs”!! Enjoy Fall!!

All Students will be offered 5 items: a Meat/Meat Alternate, a Bread/Grain, a Vegetable, a Fruit and MILK. Students must choose 3 items—one of which must be a Vegetable or Fruit. (Sometimes the bread and meat are together and count as 2 items--sandwiches/pasta dishes.) Other Junior/Senior High ENTRÉE
choices include Cold Sandwich Bar, Yogurt, Chef Salad or occasionally Peanut Butter & Jelly. Elementary students may also choose a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich or occasionally a Yogurt.
Occasionally there are differences in Elementary & Jr/Sr High menus, as indicated by EL or HS. Salad Bars in both dining rooms offer additional fruits and vegetables.
