To glorify God in all we do.

To go to Heaven and take as many with us as possible.

SERVING our FAMILY

Our Goal: Our Mission:

G ems in Genealogies In Genesis 5 we come across the first genealogy in the Bible. Its purpose is to trace the “descendent” that would crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15) that encouraged Adam and Eve to disobey God. God promised the serpent that even though he (the serpent) had taken

over, God would prevail one day through a human descendent. The genealogies of the Old Testament trace God’s work to bring down the serpent.

In Genesis 5 we learn of ten descendants. The list follows a pattern for the first six men. It tells us the number of years the man lived until he fathered the one who would be next on the list. Then the reader is told how long the man lived after the birth of his son and that he fathered other sons and daughters. Then we are told how long the man lived in total. Lastly the genealogy states “and he died.”

Enoch, the seventh, breaks this pattern. The listing of Enoch starts off the same as the others before him but then we learn that Enoch “walked with God 300 hundred years” after having his son Methuselah. It also states that he had other sons and daughters during that walk. Then the break comes. Enoch was taken by God. He DIDN’T die. Part of the purpose of the genealogy is to show that the consequence of “dying” is passed on to everyone. But Enoch is the exception.

The genealogy continues for the next generation in the same way but will provide two differences in the final two generations. I believe that God is showing us through Enoch that death is not the permanent consequence. God has a plan to overcome death. Another sneak preview will be seen in Noah but for now, God shows that He plans to overcome death as only He can.

You are either leaving your mark on the world,

or the world is leaving its mark on you.

He does not love what is good who does not

hate what is evil.

Christianity is worth little if it doesn’t change
