HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY - On behalf of Sister Mildred, Mrs. Costello, The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, Father Kirk, Deacon Bell and Deacon Teson and Myself, we would like to wish all the Mothers of our Parish Family and very Happy and Blessed Day.

A Mother’s Prayer Loving God, you are both Father and Mother to us.

You gave us your own Beloved Child Jesus that we may come to see, from his words and deeds

of compassion, how much you care for us.

You gave us Mary, our Mother, faithful disciple, who treasured your word in her heart.

Like her, may I be ever attentive to your word. Make me sensitive to the needs of my children

that they, like Jesus, may grow in wisdom, age and grace. May they be joyous in their living,

compassionate in their loving, and generous always in your service.

In Jesus’ name, I pray. --Sr. Eleanor Bernstein

Blessed Among Us

St. Magdalene of Canossa – Founder, Canossian Sisters of Charity (1774-1835) Magdalene Gabriella di Canossa was born in Verona, Italy, to a wealthy family. Though her family counted on her to marry within her class, she was more devoted to the practice of charity: “Should the fact I was born a marquess prevent me from serving Jesus Christ in his poor?” Apart from teaching the catechism to children, she busied herself visiting the sick and distributing food and alms to the hungry. She had a special devotion to Mary – the Mother of Sorrows beneath the Cross – and this inspired her determination to see the image of Christ in all who suffered. In 1799 she took two poor girls into her home. Soon she acquired a larger house and attracted other women to help her in establishing a community that combined a spirit of communion with God and the works of mercy. It was the beginning of what became the Canossian Sisters of Charity. Schools for girls and eventually also boys spread across Italy and later around the world. Madgalene was able to combine the demanding duties of her vocation with an intense life of mystical prayer. Periods of dryness were broken by moments when she felt herself “enraptured in God”. In time while at prayer she wrote, “I saw him within me like a luminous sun and was absorbed by the Divine Presence to the point that…the strength of heavenly joy was almost suffocating me.” She died on April 10, 1835 and was canonized in 1988. Her feast is May 8. “The Religious Life is only the gospel translated into practice.” -St. Magdelene of Canossa

SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS

Come Together Let’s be Church, you and I. Never mind what others are saying or, after two thousand years, how hopeless it all seems. Let’s stick together – we call it communion, don’t we? – and practice being the people of God united in one faith, one Lord, one baptism. Anyone who agrees on that much can come along! It doesn’t matter which of the last ten popes is your favorite. It doesn’t matter if you take communion in the hand or on the tongue. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to pray the rosary, the Jesus Prayer, or the collected poetry of Daniel Berrigan. I won’t make a face if you wear gym clothes to Mass instead of a suit and tie. Your stance on female deacons isn’t a deal-breaker. Our unit can’t hang on political affiliation. It’s none of my business what you’ve done or failed to do. Are we the friends of Jesus or aren’t we? I grant you: Jesus had a pretty strange assortment of friends. If that’s okay with him, it has to be fine with us. Does it make Jesus sad, I wonder, to see how divided we are? On the night before he dies, our unity is on his mind: that we might stick together, come what may. Jesus is right to worry about this. Today’s assembly is a minefield that wary homilists must tiptoe through. Would St. Paul dare to suggest today that, in Christ, there is no conservative or liberal? W hat is Church, if we don’t believe this? Alice Camille is the co-author of The Forgiveness Book, and other titles at www.alicecamille.com Page 5/203
