Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

Upcoming Mass commitments: Aug. 3: Sister Peggy, Linda D., Wilma M., Virginia S. Aug. 4: Arlene B., Connie F. Aug. 5: Ed B., Joyce K. Aug. 6: Maxine B., Denise & Michael G., Bernie H. Aug. 7: Margaret K. Aug. 8: Peggy C., Tim G., Pat H., Catilde M., Patricia P., Diane & Bill S., Jean V. Aug. 9: Ellie A., Elaine S.

If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 454-8974. There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA

From the Desk of Fr. Glenn “Send them away…you give them something” What a dialogue Jesus and the disciples are having today. Jesus is busy healing and the disciples are having hunger pangs, thinking about dinner. “Go and buy,” is the answer to crowd control as far as they are concerned; Jesus turns the tables on them inviting them to watch what he’s doing – giving without cost – and imitate it. It goes over their heads. They miss seeing the compassion that is at the root of his activity. He acts to relieve suffering, to satisfy hunger but the Twelve remain unconvinced. In addition, one could jump to the conclusion that they’ve already set aside the bread and fishes for themselves (after the crowd “goes to buy”). But for Jesus, that small basket of food is enough for the larger need.

If we share what we have, the hunger of all can be satisfied. I wonder what this might have to do with the root of all the international unrest we’ve observed the past few months. Could it be hunger for the basics? Could it be that there’s enough food in the world for everyone to have enough, if some didn’t have more than necessary? Is the disciples’ solution (“go and buy”) much like the one we come up with?

It would be my intention to offer a reflection on the scriptures or the season each week in the bulletin. Hopefully it will be of some spiritual and practical help for all of us, along with the Question of the Week. I’m delighted to be Pastor of Our Lady of Peace and plan on introducing myself at all Masses next weekend. This weekend I’ll be saying goodbye to parishioners at Saint Joseph in Sharon.

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve met staff, the daily Mass groups and talked with Fr. Ted. I’ve met the student receptionists, watched the pouring of the gym floor and the repairs to the concrete pads in the rectory courtyard. There’s no shortage of things going on here, and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and join the rest of you in the life of this parish family. See you next week! Fr. Glenn Whitman

ERIE GIVES DAY

August 12, 2014

Support Our Lady of Peace Parish & School

Proceeds to benefit the Our Lady of Peace School Endowment Fund

Erie Gives is a wonderful opportunity for your donation to Our Lady of Peace Parish & School to do even more good. On Tuesday, August 12, 2014, between 8:00AM to 8:00PM EST a percentage match of your donation will expand your contribution to support OLP.

Please support Our Lady of Peace Parish & School on Erie Gives Day, Tuesday, August 12, 2014.

The Erie Community Foundation is sponsoring Erie Gives to help local nonprofit organizations raise funds needed for their various missions. The Erie Community Foundation will enhance each donor's gift by providing a prorated match to each gift made to a nonprofit. The Foundation will divide a total of $200,000 ($100,000 provided by The Erie Community Foundation, $50,000 provided by GE Transportation, $25,000 from Erie Insurance, plus an additional $25,000 from Presque Isle Downs & Casino) among the participating nonprofits.

Your generous donation is tax-deductible and will be used towards the OLP endowment, established in 1990 with a principal of $11,528.96 through generous donations of OLP parishioners like yourselves. The funds were set aside to provide financial assistance to members of OLP parish in obtaining a Catholic education for their children.

LET US SHOW OUR SUPPORT TO THE 1990 FOUNDERS BY RAISING MORE THAN THE ENDOWMENT INCEPTION. OUR GOAL IS $12,000!

Thank you in advance for considering a gift to OLP through Erie Gives.

How Erie Gives WORKS

The Erie Gives Program started in 2011, and has been a huge success for many non-profit organizations throughout Erie County. Here is how Erie Gives works.

Day and Time: The event takes place on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Donors have a 12 hour window between hours of 8:00AM to 8:00PM EST to donate to your favorite non-profit organizations.

Gift Amount: The minimum gift is $25.00. There is no limit to the amount of money you may give.

Credit Cards: Only Visa and MasterCard will be accepted. The credit card processor charges a nominal fee per transaction. The Erie Community Foundation does not receive any fees. (Sorry, Visa and MasterCard gift cards will not be accepted.)

Prorated Match: The Erie Community Foundation will enhance each donor’s gift by providing a prorated match to each gift made to a nonprofit. The Foundation will divide a total of $200,000 ($100,000 provided by The Erie Community Foundation, $50,000 provided by GE Transportation, $25,000 from Erie Insurance, and $25,000 from Presque Isle Downs & Casino) among the participating nonprofits. The more a nonprofit raises the more of the $200,000 the nonprofit will receive.

Your Receipt: You will receive an email receipt of your gift; please retain it for tax purposes. Unless you choose to remain anonymous, your donor information will be sent to the appropriate organizations.

When will the Nonprofit receive your donation: The organizations will receive your donation plus The Erie Community Foundation’s prorated match within two to four weeks of Erie Gives.
