J 7, 2018 2 — O L L V C C

On this second Sunday after Christmas and the first Sunday of the New Year, the Church celebrates the feast of the Epiphany. Traditionally, the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6. In many countries around the world, the Epiphany still is observed on January 6. In Eastern Christian traditions it is also observed as Christmas. In our country, the bishops decided to assign the observance of the Epiphany to the second Sunday after Christmas so that it would always be celebrated on Sunday instead of during the week. This would give the faithful a better opportunity to celebrate this important feast. What is the Epiphany and why is it so important? The word “epiphany” means “to reveal” or “to manifest”. In the Christian sense, the Epiphany means that God has revealed His Son

to the world and has manifested Him as the Savior and Light of the world. God has done this in a very special way through the light of a star and through some very mysterious visitors from the Far East. The Epiphany is often also referred to as the feast of the Three Kings or the Three Wise Men. The Gospel, according to St. Matthew, tells us that Magi from the East arrived in Jerusalem seeking a newly born king. Magi are, by definition, members of a hereditary priestly class among the ancient Medes and Persians. The light of a great star in the sky guided their arrival. Being well read and educated, the Magi understood the star’s appearance to signal the birth of a new king whose coming was foretold in the ancient scriptures. It is uncertain whether these mysterious visitors from the East were Kings or not. It is also unclear whether their number was only three; or even whether they were only men. The notion that the Magi were three in number comes from the three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, which, according to Matthew, they brought to the Child Jesus. The idea that the Magi were kings comes from the Prophet Isaiah and from Psalm 72, which states, “The Kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay Him homage, all nations shall serve Him.” Even though our Christmas decorations show the arrival of the Magi at the manger, it is more likely that they arrived much later after Jesus’ birth. Matthew says, “on entering the house” the Magi saw the Child with His mother. Joseph certainly would have found better accommodations for his holy family. Also, because King Herod ordered the massacre of all young boys up to two years of age in the vicinity of Bethlehem, the Magi more than likely arrived later after the birth of Jesus. What is important about the Epiphany is that it is God’s manifestation of His Son to the entire world. The arrival of the Magi from the East indicates that God’s promised Messiah was not sent for only a selected few, but rather for all of His people. Christ has come into the world for the salvation of all people of all times and places. Jesus is indeed the universal King and all nations shall rightly give Him honor and praise. According to tradition, packets of incense and chalk are blessed on the feast of the Epiphany. The incense is a reminder of the gifts of the Magi. The chalk is used to mark the year and the initials of the Magi above the doorway of your home. C + M + B + 2018 This marking is a sign that your home is a Christian household and that you have the wisdom of the Three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, to follow the light of Christ and His Gospel every day of the year. It also stands for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, which is Latin for “Christ bless our home”. Please take a blessed packet of chalk and incense home with you. Follow the instructions on the packet and mark the doorposts of your home today. (We ask that you take only one packet per household so that there will be enough for everyone.) I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making this Christmas the joyful celebration that it was. Thank you to all who showed so much kindness, generosity and love to Fr. Tom, the parish staff, and me with your many cards, gifts and baked goods. We very much appreciate you thinking of us during this wonderful time of the year. We promise to keep you all in our prayers and we hope that this New Year 2018 will be filled with God’s choicest blessings for you and your families!

Fr. Gerry

What do I do to make the Church a community where everyone feels welcomed and understood, everyone feels the mercy and love of God who renews life?

- Pope Francis, General Audience, May 29, 2013

Each of us can make our parish a more welcoming place to newcomers, persons with disabilities, and persons with special needs. Here are a few ideas: If you see a parent struggling with a child’s behavior,

offer a friendly smile, a sympathetic nod, or a helping hand.

If you see a person physically struggling to get in, hold open a door, scoot down in the pew, or offer to carry something.

If you see someone exhibiting unusual behavior, understand that it might be a sign of a disability. Embrace the person as a child of God and understand that each of us has different ways of receiving and communicating God’s love.

If you see someone who is disheveled or out of sorts, consider that he or she might be in dire straits. Act with compassion.

Some people may struggle to get to or sit through the Mass. Offer a ride, an open door, or simply acceptance and understanding.

A warm smile, a nod, or a small kindness can make all the difference.

“Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

— Matthew 25:40

God is peace: let us ask him to help us to be peacemakers each day, in our life, in our families, in our cities and nations, in the whole world. Let us allow ourselves to be moved by God’s goodness. (12/25/13) - Pope Francis

All parishioners are invited to participate in our newly formed Parish Pro-Life Ministry.

This important ministry will have a focus on prayer and also help promote and plan pro-life activities within our parish. As Pope John Paul II has reminded us: “Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good” (The Gospel of Life, no. 87).

Fr. Gerry will be welcoming everyone to the first group meeting:

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2018 6:30pm - 7:30pm

In the Welcome Room of the Church The meetings will continue every second Thursday of the month.

Who is the Blessed Virgin Mary? Why do we honor her?

What can we learn from her?

To have these questions answered, please come to this presentation on:

SUNDAY, JANUARY 14 11:00am - 12:30pm

In Bevan Hall’s McFarland Room

A Special Presentation with a Focus to examine the ways in which the three Persons of the Trinity relate to one another, how they relate to us, and what difference this makes to our lives, will take place on:

SUNDAY, JANUARY 21 11:00am - 12:30pm

In Bevan Hall’s McFarland Room

Two Special Presentations in January for all Parishioners — Both Facilitated by Ron Vallance —

THANKS to Our Lady of Las Vegas: a man who is homeless woke up hungry this morning and came to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada for a hot, nutritious meal. Like the hundreds of men, women, children, veterans, and people with disabilities who were in line alongside him, he was not asked if he is Catholic. Instead, we asked if he was hungry.

On behalf of every person who comes to us in need of food, thank you for the kind gift of $500.00 from Our Lady of Las Vegas to our St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility.

SACRAMENTALS “are sacred signs which bear a resemblance to the sacraments. They signify effects, particularly of a spiritual nature, which are obtained through the intercession of the Church. By them, men are disposed to receive the chief effect of the sacraments, and various occasions in life are rendered holy” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1667).

PLEASE PRAY for THOSE WHO ARE ILL If you have the sick person’s permission, you may request that their name be printed in the bulletin for prayers. This is strictly for the sick only. Their name will remain for four consecutive Sundays. If a longer period of time is needed, please contact the parish office. (The date next to the name is the date their name will be removed)

Please be mindful of not shaking others’ hands for the Sign of Peace when you are sick and could pass on germs, especially during flu season. No one is obligated to shake hands at the sign of peace. As an alternative to shaking hands, you may simply bow to those around you and say, “Peace be with you.” If your fellow parishioners decide upon this option, do not be offended, as it is merely for sanitary concerns and is not personal.

You may want to also consider not taking the Blood of Christ while you are sick.

All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. - Psalm 72:11

What to do with that tattered scapular or broken rosary? Catholic tradition holds that when a material sacramental becomes so worn out that it can no longer be used as a sacramental, it should be disposed of in a becoming manner and not merely tossed into the trash. Catholic custom is to burn those things that can be burned — for example, rosaries, Bibles, prayer books. For items that cannot be burned — a statue, for instance — they should be buried. — www.osv.com
