Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading directs us to Mount Tabor and the miracle of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This year, St. Mark is the evangelist who provides us with the description of what occurred. St. Mark tells us that Jesus took Peter, James and his brother, John up on a high mountain. Jesus would often go off to remote places to be alone and pray. In the Sacred Scriptures, the top of a hill or mountain was often presented as the ideal and sacred place for prayer and sacrifice to God. Mountains are mentioned frequently in the Bible because they were very much a part of the landscape of biblical regions. Mountains and hills are mentioned over 500 times in the Bible. Mountains have logical religious symbolism for biblical cultures because their height places the person

who is praying “closer to God”, who is believed to dwell in the highest heavens. In the Old Testament, God often revealed himself on the mountaintop. One such mountaintop was Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is the place where Moses spent time in prayer and communion with God. It is the place where he received the tablets of the Law; the Ten Commandments. For this reason, Mount Sinai is significant as the place where God made a covenant with the people of Israel and is a symbol of God’s Covenant with Israel. Mount Moriah was the place where Abraham was tested by God to offer his son, Isaac, as a burnt sacrifice. Mount Nebo was the place from which Moses was able to view the land promised to the Israelites. It was also where Moses died and is presumably buried. Mount Zion is the location of the Jerusalem Temple and the palace of King David. In the New Testament, Jesus appoints his Twelve Apostles on a mountain. In the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Jesus delivers the Beatitudes in his Sermon on the Mount. The Evangelist, St. Matthew, in particular, has six significant mountain “scenes” in his gospel: Jesus’ temptation (4:8); the Sermon on the Mount (5:1); a number of healings (15:29); the Transfiguration (17:1); Jesus’ final discourse (24:1); and the commissioning of the Apostles (28:16). Perhaps the most significant mountain scene in the Gospels, however, is the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. Jesus is accompanied by Moses and Elijah, who themselves encountered God on the mountaintop in the Old Testament. Now, they encounter God through Jesus. Jesus, in turn, is seen as the fulfillment of the Law (represented by Moses) and the Prophets (represented by the Prophet Elijah). Moreover, the Transfiguration of Jesus is a gift of revelation to the Apostles Peter, James and John, who have a key role in helping their brother disciples to accept and understand the truth of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The tragedy of Jesus’ crucifixion and death was going to be a terrible blow to the Apostles. They were not going to be able to understand how Jesus could succumb to this defeat. From their time spent with Jesus, the Apostles knew that He was always able to handle any question and any situation. He always came out on top. Jesus giving up is certainly not something they expected. The death of Jesus will certainly be hard for the Apostles to accept, but the resurrection will be inconceivable. Jesus allowed Peter, James and John to witness this Transfiguration to help reassure them that He truly is the Messiah and the Son of God. When His resurrection happens, the Transfiguration will serve as a reminder of who Jesus is. This experience was necessary for Peter, James and John, so that they, in turn will be able to help their brother Apostles in their struggle to understand and believe the Paschal Mystery. Shrouded in this miraculous event is the voice of the Father making the solemn declaration that Jesus is His Son, and that we listen to Him. Let us heed this important revelation and follow Christ and truly listen to Him.

It is again time to begin the annual Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA). Together, with all of the parishes in the Diocese or Las Vegas, we will participate in helping the Church’s larger mission. Next week I will present the details and also I ask that you keep a look out for the CSA mailing that will be coming your way soon. Stay tuned!

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

We congratulate our RCIA Elect who celebrated the Rite of Election on the first Sunday of Lent. During the Rite of Election, those Catechumens awaiting baptism signed the Book of Elect. They have now been officially recognized by our Church as beloved future members. Please continue to pray for them as they journey with us through Lent.

Fast & Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

Abstinence laws consider that meat comes from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep, or pigs — all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. — www.usccb.org

Bowl. Pick up your family’s Rice Bowl in the vestibule of the church, beginning on February 20. Remember, what you give up for Lent changes lives.

There will be a receptacle in the vestibule of the church the weekend AFTER Easter, April 10 & 11, for you to turn in your Rice Bowls. Thank you for your generosity!

LENT Protect me, God: for in you I take refuge. You are my portion and cup, my life is in your hands. I keep you ever before me, for you are my God. You stand at my right hand; I shall not waver. And so my heart is glad and my soul rejoices; my body also

rests secure. For you do not leave my life among the dead, or let your servant go down into the pit. You will show me the path of life, fullness of joy in your presence, happiness forever at your right hand. Amen.
