A Cluster of Roman Catholic Communities Our Mission: People of God, united in Christ, serving others, welcoming all to the Table of Life Our Lady of Lourdes † Saint Anne Sunday, May 31st, 2020 Dear Friends, Racism has been our countrys original sin since the first European settlement in what became the United States. In 1619 African people were brought in slavery to the original English 13 colonies. Racism has taken a variety of forms over our history, but it is still very much at work in our society. At Our Lady of Lourdes+St. Anne we have tried to educate ourselves about racism, most recently in our Lenten series about Racism in Rochester (which was unfortunately truncated by the pandemic). Today all Americans are seeing the effects of racism brought forcefully to our consciousness. People of color are being infected with COVID-19 and dying of the disease at much higher rates than white people. African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans are all more susceptible to the human coronavirus than are whites. This is because of the systemic conditions in this country that mean people of color very often do not have access to health care and thus suffer from co-morbidities, are poor and thus live in crowded conditions, work in jobs that cannot be done from home. People of color, particularly African Americans, have longed suffered from police brutality. In this age of cell phones the evidence is inescapably in front of us. The murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis is not an isolated act. Mr. Floyd s death is the latest in a long line of killings by police of unarmed African Americans. The demonstrations that have resulted from the viewing of the video of his killing are understandable reactions to centuries of oppression of people based on the color of their skin. The violence that has accompanied the demonstrations in Minneapolis is not justified. Peaceful demonstrations and demands for justice are justified. As followers of Jesus Christ we are all (no matter the color of our skin) called to work for justice and equality for all of our citizens. Please pray for our country that we will be open to the grace of God to enable us to transcend our original sin so that the blessings of this nation may be shared equally by all. Grace and peace, Fr. Dear Friends, Racism has been our country’s original sin since the first European settlement in what became the United States.

Mr. Floyd’s death is the latest in a long line of killings by police of unarmed African Americans.

Gary Tyman

We have often heard that in God, “we live and move and have our being,” and that is true. But there are those occasions when the Holy Spirit is particularly present. When that occurs, for me often out of doors. I try to capture the en-counter in a poem. So in celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit, here are two offerings. I hope they convey some sense of Pentecost. -Steve Witkowicz Visitation Minister It willed to come after yesterday’s rain, A drenching downpour, Leaving the earth sodden. In branches highlighted yellow with leaves, In the glimpse of the fading moon, It downbeat and lifted. In fuller light it roiled the treetops, Straining sounds of wood stretched, Trunk sway, branch wave, A tarantella. Above, clouds cantering light, now bright, now dark, As leaves, singular yet in shower, Glide to ground. In my ears the seashell sound, Footprints of wind, Hummed amid louder lapping of lake waves. No brooding wind spirit this, But God’s own grace given for free.

In the quilt of cloud clover, Warm and soft, In the gestating darkness, The gentle glide of Eden’s breeze Barely stirring limbs and boughs With blessing as you pass. At the sun’s height low you crouch, Slow on Your way; Stealthy crawl amid dried ferns Speaking the sound of mice, As friendly fronds wave good-bye. In the later light You play in the treetops, An otter sleek and fast; A fuse igniting a shimmy of color, Confetti of yellow and red. Leaves lead like cliff divers Blown by your breath. No smooth arc of a fall But a tilt-a-whirl tumble dance, Landing with a glide of grace. Then to the road where You chase Leaves in a whirling race of tag, Only to soar again to the chant Of evergreen tops as they sway and pray. At the surge of Your name All creation snaps, Grass and oak bow, Clouds rally, And the lake awakes to an endless roll, As you blow where You will.

Notes about the Monthly offertory report: Shown on the left is a comparison between actual weekly collection income to our collections expected each month. This fiscal year’s budget has been significantly reduced of all non-vital costs to reflect the drastic downward trend of our collections over the past several years (“weeklies” account for over 70% of each parish’s income)

A favorable monthly variance indicates the “weeklies” donated during the month exceeded the amount expected of the month. Meanwhile, an unfavorable monthly variance indicates the total “weeklies” donated during the month do not meet budgeted expectations and our financial obligations may not be met.

Until further notice, all Masses are canceled. Our Lady of Lourdes is open briefly in the morning and St Anne is closed. If you are in a high risk group, it is recommended that you pray at home to limit exposure. Masses will resume in the foreseeable future and we will keep you posted when that will be. Please help your neighbors, check in with family and friends by calling them, and shop responsibly. If you are able to get extra, please consider donating it to local shelters and cupboards as the needy are in an even more vulnerable position right now. Thank you.
