Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Perseverance In today's Gospel, Jesus gives a clever example of why we are to persevere in praying, even if we think the prayer is not being heard. The crooked judge just wanted to get that widow off his back. So we can pray to God with even more confidence, because we know that God loves us and will answer our prayers. St. Paul carries that theme of perseverance even fur-ther. He is not just talking about prayer here; he en-courages Timothy to persevere in proclaiming God's word as well. That command we may find more chal-lenging than prayer. He tells Timothy (and us!) to "convince, reprimand and encourage through all pa-tience and teaching" (2 Timothy 4:2). How can we do that?

"Convince" reminds me that our faith should be rea-sonable. Jesus' command to love one another, for in-stance, can be taught much more convincingly by giv-ing examples of love. A mother who hugs her child when he is hurt and encourages him when he feels lost is teaching that command in a way that will be re-membered much longer than just telling him to love people. Paul also talks about reprimanding each other. Most people find it difficult to reprimand someone they are in charge of, much less one who is equal in status. That's where patience comes in. A reprimand can be made patiently and gently, as a sign of concern rather than authority. Paul lastly mentions teaching. Parents can do their part by teaching the stories from the Bible, helping chil-dren to see God in creation, teaching them to pray, and being good examples of God's love for them. If you send your children to religion classes or the parish school, do what you can to support the teachers so that what the children learn at school is practiced at home. All Saint’s Day/All Soul’s Day

During the month of November we take time to remember our loved ones who have passed. This year you are asked to

bring photos (framed or unframed) of a loved one who has died. Beginning October 29/30 a table will be set up in the vestibule (main entrance) of the church to dis-play your photos. The photos will remain for the month of November. Make sure to put your name and phone number on the back of the pictures. On November 2nd we celebrate All Souls Day. At the 7:00 PM Mass we will say aloud the names of those whose funeral Mass was celebrated in our parish during the past 12 months. A candle will be lit for each of the deceased. All parishioners are invited to attend this Mass and re-member these and all of our beloved dead.

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting an “Italian Night” on Saturday, October 22nd after the 4:30 mass downstairs in the Church hall. Tickets will be sold this weekend ( October 15th and 16th) after all the masses. The cost for dinner is $5.00 per person with a maximum $20.00 per family. Come and taste the cuisine of Italy with your family and friends. Gluten free options will be available.

Deaths

Your prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Joyce Foulks and Allen Miller.

Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the families of Joyce and Allen. We pray that the God of compassion be with you during this time of sorrow and that He welcomes Joyce and Allen into His eternal king-dom of peace.

Grant to all our dearly departed eternal rest, O Lord,

and may your light shine on them forever. Amen.

It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving will soon be upon us. For many in our commu-nity with stressed budgets and financial challenges, a Thanksgiving dinner just isn’t

possible. Your support of our annual Food Drive will help make a fulfilling holiday possible for many families this season and also continue to help throughout the year. Our annual Thanksgiving Drive benefits Our Lady of Mercy and St. John Neumann Food Pantry. Our ministry to the needy is combined with St. John Neumann to better facilitate assistance to our neighbors in need. Many fami-lies have benefitted from your support of this program. This year we again are asking that you contribute gift cards from our local supermarkets (Shaws, Market Basket or Hannafords) in any denomination or if you prefer you may purchase one of the non perishable items listed below. Gift cards should be dropped off in the basket on the altar and food items in the boxes at the doors beginning the weekend of October 29/30th through the weekend of November 19/20th.
