Ask Fr James

What is the Biblical meaning of the Kingship of Christ?

Every year, on the last Sunday of the Liturgical year, Catholics all over the world celebrate the Solemnity of Christ

as King. We often wonder if this means that we are celebrating Christ as we celebrate the world's royalties and

monarchs. What the church celebrates is Jesus the "Son of God" which means that he is “like” God. Being like-God,

Jesus embodies the Father’s nature.

To be a ‘king’ is the very purpose of Jesus’ mission in the world. In John 12:1-11 Mary anointed the feet of Jesus

using pure nard which was often used to anoint kings. She recognized Jesus as king; son of God. At the feeding of

the five thousand, the people desired to make Jesus their king (John 6:14-15). That Jesus withdrew from the people

does not deny his kingship. Jesus’ role as king is not about a physical kingship but a spiritual matter because Jesus’

kingdom is not of this world.

Jesus clarified the above statement to Pilate at his trial. Pilate had asked Jesus; “Are You the King of the

Jews?" (John 18:28-38). Jesus tells Pilate; “My kingdom is not of this world.” This response of Jesus expresses

Jesus’ purpose for coming into this world. God's people were in moral decay. They had completely lost what true

covenant relationship was all about. Pilate then inquires about Jesus' origin. “Where do you come from?” The

question is relevant since “the origin of Jesus’ kingship corresponds to his own origin.”

After his crucifixion, Pilate writes a sign over his head - The sign proclaims Jesus’ kingship to all the world. His

Kingship sign written over his head on the cross was written in three languages: Hebrew, Latin and Greek, the

language of religion, government and culture. In doing this, John (19:19) is telling the readers that Jesus is not only

the “King of the Jews,” but that his kingship extends beyond the Jews to the rest of the world. The sign, therefore,

acts as a prophecy, declaring to the world that the event on the cross is a universal event. Jesus is not only the king

of the Jews, but he is also the whole world. The whole message of the gospels is to help us to the understanding of

Jesus being ‘lifted up’ so that the crucifixion is seen as the enthronement of Jesus.

You may email/send your faith questions to Fr. James and he will answer them in our Sunday Bulletins.

AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE TF114: Catholics and Other Faiths - Part 3 "Religion - You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." As we put the finishing touches on our discussion about Catholics and other religions we find ourselves wondering "What the heck is a religion anyway?" We'll discuss religion vs World View, how we make choices in everyday life and whether or not atheists believe things the same way Christians or other people of faith believe. We're ques-tioning everything and finding answers if we're lucky this week on Thinking Faith! http://thinkingfaith.libsyn.com/tf114-catholics-and-other-faiths-part-3

“AS ONE WHO SERVES” The Archdiocese of Regina’s discernment process for our next cohort of deacon candidates is under way. The process is thorough, like any responsible discernment in life. And, like other kinds of discernment, it is not a test to pass, but a question to answer. “Yes” or “no” are both good answers as long as God’s will is being followed. No one “fails.” The process extends over several months and includes an applica-tion form and a series of different kinds of interviews de-signed to help you (and the Archdiocese) to recognize God’s call in your life. It also needs to be accompanied by prayer, discussion with loved ones and trusted mentors, and learning more about what being a deacon means. If you have ever wondered if God is calling you to serve God’s people as a permanent deacon, now is the time to ex-plore this possibility. To get started, contact Dr. Brett Salkeld, Archdiocesan Theologian at 306-352-1651, ext. 214. St. Martin de Porres Parish is seeking a part-time Pastoral Assistant who is a practicing Catholic familiar with sacra-ments and liturgy. The successful candidate will be directly responsible to the Pastor for the religious faith formation of the parish family and where appropriate, the St. Matthew School community. The position involves collaboration with the Pastor, Pastoral Team and parish groups. A full job de-scription can be found on St. Martin’s website: www.stmartindeporresregina.com. Preference will be given to those with a background in religious studies or lay minis-tries. If you’re interested, please send your resume to [email protected], or mail it to St. Martin de Porres 4720 Castle Rd, Regina SK, S4S 4X1. Attention: Lynda and Lisa. The closing date for application submissions is Friday, December 7th, 2018. Thank you for your interest, only applicants selected for interviews will be contacted.
