PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“Let us beset the just one … because he is obnoxious to us … let us condemn him to a shameful death …” Wisdom

“Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist … there is disorder and every foul

practice … where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? …” James

The existence of evil in the world is so prevalent. We do not ignore the good, the beauty in the world, but the stench of evil is everywhere. The greed for money causes so much hurt, the number of killings just grows, consumerism empties our hearts, the breakdown of values creates a harshness between us, families fall into violence and divi-sion, addictions destroy lives, poverty shows its ugly face, racism shows its darkness with boldness, individualism suffocates community life, depression and hopelessness surround us and all meaning of life begins to disappear. All these must be confronted with Jesus. Without Him, we can do nothing. He gives us the love to overcome all this. He has done this already, when He died on the Cross for us. Lord Jesus, allow us to enter into your passion, that we might be freed from all fears and be inspired to do good! Mother of Sorrows, help us!

“If anyone wishes to be first … he shall be the last of all and the servant of all …” Mark

Monsignor Lorenzo

Children and Youth Programs implemented throughout the Archdiocese of LA

Every year, students at Catholic elementary and high schools, religious educa on, confirma on and youth ministry programs in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles receive age‐appropriate child abuse pre‐ven on and repor ng training. The “Empowering God’s Children Program” is designed for Kindergar‐ten through 12th grade students. This program teaches children and young people to understand appropriate and inappropriate boundaries and gives them the tools that empower them to take ac on and report if they feel uncomfortable, scared or confused. More than 1.4 million students have a ended these programs since 2004.

CONTINUING OUR STUDY ON PRAYER

This week we are talking about the rosary. What be er way is there to learn the life story of Jesus than learning to pray the rosary. Each of the mysteries touches on the stages of his life when he was here on earth with us. There are many resources published that will assist you with learning to follow this beau ful devo on. This prayer is a wonderful way to enter into a personal rela onship with our Blessed Mother and Jesus. The many saints in our Catholic faith who a ribute their clarity of purpose of this form of prayer is endless. Saint John Paul II said “simply yet profound, the ro‐sary remains a prayer of great significance, des ned to bring forth a harvest of holiness.” For those of you who are new to the rosary, begin by reci ng one Mystery and one decade a week with your family. The rosary is a wonderful way for a family to pray together. I am confident that the change you will see in your family, if you are faithful to this prayer devo on, will be pro‐found.

We are looking forward to our Father/Son Event on Satur-day, September 29. This year our fathers and sons will gather for games, food and memories. This is our 2nd Father/Son event

and we look forward to it becoming an annual tradi-tion!

Please join us for the Blessing of the Animals Word Service on Thursday, October 4 at 5:00pm. You are welcome to bring your pets. Please no snakes.

Our annual carnival is scheduled for October 12-14. Our first Poker Tournament is scheduled for Friday, November 16. We will have more infor-mation for both events soon.

Blessings!

WHERE DO THE WARS COME FROM? The le er from Saint James is quite explicit about the problem of war and peace. “The fruit of right‐eousness is sown in peace for those who cul vate peace.” So then, “Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? . . . You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war.” War is an evil and never to be the first resort in se ling conflicts. SIMPLICITY AND LOVE As Jesus walks along with his disciples, they are talking and arguing. Jesus asks them what they are discussing, but he knows. They are arguing about which of them will be greatest in the reign of God. He tells them that whoever wishes to be first must take the last place and be the servant of all. Then he takes a li le child and places it in their midst. “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.” Some mes it is assumed that small children are incapable of understanding the teachings of the Gospels and the sacraments of the Church. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which has its roots in the Montessori method of pedagogy, allows even very small children as young as three to experience the life of Jesus and the litur‐gy of the Church through materials such as the altar, small vestments in seasonal colors, and wooden maps of the Holy Land where Jesus lived and trav‐eled, as well as other materials related to the Gos‐pels and the liturgy. People who observe the chil‐dren at their work using this method of catechesis are amazed at their understanding of the Gospels and especially the parables. Most importantly, the children develop a genuine love for Jesus that is deep and touching. There is a lesson here for all of us, as Jesus point‐ed out. We must have the same simplicity and love for Jesus as these li le children in order to enter the reign of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc
