Safety tips for kids playing sports this school year
Sports seasons start early, even for young children, and while it’s great that they’re out ge ng exercise and learning new skills, safety is s ll a top priority. It’s rec‐ommended that all children who are playing school sports have an annual physical, and relevant health in‐forma on (allergies, condi ons, etc.) should be shared with coaches. Parents should make sure their children have the right gear, and that it fits and works wells. Chil‐dren should stay well‐hydrated, well‐fed, and well‐rested to keep up their energy and strength. Student athletes should be learning to be kind and fair, too, no ma er the outcome of the game.

The spirituality of renova ng the church pews stems from our collec ve responsibility to make the house of God a befi ng place for Adora on and Eucharis c Ban‐quet. The renova on of the parish pews is a divine ac‐
on and we trust in Him to accompany us to complete the financing. The spirituality of this project is reflected in the im‐agery of the celes al assembly, where the Angels and Saints sit together to worship God with songs of Praise. The renova on transcends the physical structure of re‐furbishing the pews, which are visible to the human eyes. Consequently, it is a projec on of our heavenly Adora‐
on and Eternal Banquet. It is the spirituality of the di‐vine project that inspired our predecessors to rebuild the church a er the earthquake in 1987 and provided the pews which we have used for over three decades. The spirituality of renova ng the pews is also revealed in the be er disposi on we have, when we sit on the pews that enable us to concentrate in our personal and communal encounters with God. May our spiritual offering and par cipa on in the ren‐ova on of the church pews bring us the renewal and healing we need in our families and the society, through Christ our Lord. Finally, let us remain grateful to our Pas‐tor Msgr. Lorenzo Miranda who is the originator of this divine project.

ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD When Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp, away from the other prophets, Joshua, Mo‐ses’ beloved aide, urges Moses to stop them. Mo‐ses replies “Would that all the people of the L were prophets!” He proclaims that grace abounds for all and that the word of the Lord should be pro‐claimed by all the people. We see a similar situa on in the Gospel of Mark. John tells Jesus that someone who does not follow him with them is driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus replies “Do not prevent him . . . For whoever is not against us is for us.” In other words, Jesus is say‐ing the same thing as Moses: Would that all the people prophesied in God’s name!
THE DEVASTATION OF SIN Jesus goes on to teach about sin and its conse‐quences. “Whoever causes one of these li le ones who believe in me to sin, it would be be er for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” By “li le ones,” Jesus means the humble followers as well as innocent children who love him. Certainly those who have abused children have not caused the children “to sin,” but have made them vic ms of the worst kind of abuse. These people are worthy of condemna‐
on. Jesus next points out something so strong in its condemna on of sin that it alarms us when we hear it, knowing that we all are sinners. But Jesus o en speaks in metaphors and parables, and it is not nec‐essary to take his teaching about cu ng off hands and feet and gouging out eyes literally. It can be tak‐en to mean that if we are guilty of sin, we should make an immediate break from our sinfulness and return to God. Be er to cut sin out of our life than to enter into eternal darkness. There is so much to learn from these readings that we have many things to ponder and to pray about. Take advantage of these wise teachings to become closer to Christ and to treat one another with love and care. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc
