2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
PASTOR’S DESK
ORDINARY TIME
The great Christmas holidays are behind us and liturgically we enter into a period called
ordinary time. Perhaps the most common thing said about “Ordinary Time” is that it is not
ordinary at all. The great seasons of our worship, Advent-Christmas and Lent- Easter are
intense celebrations of aspects of the mystery of our salvation which we celebrate every
Sunday. The mystery is so profound that we set aside special times to celebrate elements of it
for particular attention. In that sense, Sunday celebrations outside those seasons are ordinary.
However, they are not ordinary in the ho-hum sense because the Sunday liturgy is the
identifying mark of the faith community gathering to remember that on the first day of the
week, the Lord of Life was raised up and creation came at last to completion.
The celebration of the Paschal mystery here each week is the signature event of our faith.
Christ promises to be really present here with us and bids us to gather like this again and again:
“Do this in memory of me.” To be sure, this is no ordinary event. It is a stop on our
pilgrimage to remind us of our destination and share the life-giving eucharist for the journey. It
is in effect a point of arrival and departure for us on our way to the fullness of the kingdom of
heaven.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
The annual MLK Jr observance sponsored by the Sharon Interfaith Clergy will be held on this
Sunday, January 20 at 3pm at First Congregational Church of Sharon The program will feature
a speaker and will celebrate the life and work of MLK Jr through word and song. Light
refreshments and an opportunity to mingle will be available afterward.
GRAND ANNUAL COLLECTION
This collection essential for our healthy operation will be open until the end of February. If
you have not had the chance to donate, we could use your help. Thanks to the generosity of
155 families we have reached approximately 80 percent of our goal. You know what they say
about the last 20 percent. Let’s show “what they say” how wrong they are and make a generous
contribution now if you have not already done so.

Having concluded the Christmas season with the Baptism of the Lord, we now enter into a
short period of ‘Ordinary Time’ leading up to the beginning of Lent with the Liturgy of Ash
Wednesday on March 6.
In ‘Ordinary Time’, the vestments worn by the priests/deacons are Green in color to mark
the distinction between seasons and the ‘counting’ of Sundays of the year. Green is the
color of hope.
