  • From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, The imposing ambo or pulpit at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington always impressed me. Carved into the marble is the image of a man generously sowing seed in the field—an image taken from today’s holy Gospel. Today we are prompted to pray that the soil of our hearts be ever receptive to the Word of God and carry it out. The late Cardinal Martini of Milan, an eminent scripture scholar, wrote the following about the scriptures as a light of hope for us:

When sorrow knocks at the doors of our life, when we are swept up in suffering and in the mourning of people close to us, when we are stricken by social tragedies, then we become keenly aware of the impotence of human words…But does impotence strike the Word of God, too? Is there not in the Word of God a real light of hope of which we should be witnesses…with humility and simplicity? In moments of sorrow the Word of God can illuminate our life as a real reminder of what is essential: God is speaking; God is near; God is faithful. This ought to be enough for us. Because it is the Word of God, the Bible becomes a consoling viaticum for every moment of life, even apart from the content it offers us. But the content too, kindles rays of hope. In addition, the Word of God shows us that, while some things are not granted to us or are painfully taken away, other more profound goods are revealed: courage, a deeper human solidarity, a humbler sense of our fragility, a greater vigilance over our superficial desires and of more faithful dedication to duty, over and above short term gratifications. Finally the Word of God kindles hope in us in those mysterious but real and wonderful goods which the Father is preparing in the new world for those who…have totally entrusted themselves to His love.

Verbum Dei…Word of God be our light and hope! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Frè-m ak Sè-m yo, Mwen toujou impresione chak fwa mwen ouè ambon oubyen estrade ki nan sanctyè National Imakile Consepsyon an ki Washington D.C. Se youn Ambon (estrad) ki fèt avèk piè tayé mab li gen image youn moun kap simen grain nan jaden. Youn image ke nou jwenn nan Levangil jodia. N’ap lapriyè jodia a tou pou nou genyen yon kè ki kapab resevwa Pawol Bondye a epi al simaye l toupatou.

Men eske nou ka di ke Pawol Bondye inpuisan tou? Eske Pawol Bondye a pa ban nou youn vrè limyè espwa ke nou temwen….avèk imilite ey senplisite? Nan moman soufrans nou yo Pawol Bondye a kapab fè nou ouè klè nan lavi nou se li ki fè nou sonje tout bon vrè tou sa ki esensyèl: Bondye ap pale ak nou, Bondye próch nou, Bondye fidèl ak nou. Sa ta dwe sifi pou nou. Paske li se Pawol Bondye a, Labib la vin tounen pou nou youn viaticum ki ban nou konsolasyon pandan chak moman nan lavi a, menn si li separe de contenu nou jwenn li an. Men tou nan contenu li bay la nou jwenn tou anpil espwa ladann l. An plis, Pawol Bondye montre nou menn lè gen bagay ke nou pa jwenn oubyen gen sa ki kite gwo doulè pou nou, gen lot bon bagay ki pi profon tou ki revele a nou: kouraj, se youn solidarite moun ak moun, Nan yon sens tou ki montre frajilite nou, ak anpil vijilans sou desir sipefisyèl nou yo epi tou pi fidèl nan responsabilite nou yo. Finalman Pawol Bondye a ban nou espwa nan mystè lavi a. Men sa ki setèn Bondye Papa prepare youn nouvo mondpou moun ki fe bagay ki byen yo…Ak moun ki mete konfyans yo nan renmen li an tout bon vre.

Verbum Dei…Pawol Bondye a se limyè ak espwa nou! Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. Gervasio

Going from Senior to Junior That’s what Emily Jaruszewski is doing. The daughter of Deacon Joe and his wife Deborah, Emily graduated from Mercer County Technical Schools’ Health Science Academy in June. But since she also earned an associate degree (from Mercer County Community College) a month earlier, she’s entering college with enough credits to be considered halfway through her junior year. Emily’s been accepted by Smith College in Massachusetts, where she is one of about fifty incoming students named to the college’s STRIDE program, which comes with a $20,000/annum scholarship and a paid research position with a Smith College professor. Congratulations, Emily, and best wishes for a challenging and fulfilling future, whatever you choose to pursue!

It’s Summertime— Does It Matter What I Wear to Mass?

In a word? Yes! Our clothing choices reflect the importance we place on an event. Yet Americans have a penchant for comfort that translates into casual clothing, especially outside the workplace. This attitude shows in the way we dress for church. While it is edifying to see a number of people wearing their "Sunday best," more and more people are opting to attend Mass in attire more appropriate for a workout at the gym or a visit to the beach. While it is certainly true that the Lord knows our hearts and that all are welcome in His House, the choices we make regarding our appearance are a way of providing a witness to our brothers and sisters that worship is important, and that the Church is no ordinary place.

OLS PTA Seeking Donations The Our Lady of Sorrows PTA is hosting our annual Knight to Remember auction on October 20 at the Stone Terrace in Hamilton. Last year our auction was very successful, raising more than $18,000 to support our school. We hope that you will join us in supporting us by donating NEW ITEMS for our event. If you have any gifts you are not able to use or return, we are happy to take them for our auction. If you have a donation, please contact us to arrange for pick-up or drop off at the OLS School Office by September 15. On behalf of the students at Our Lady of Sorrows, thank you very much for your support. Questions? Please feel free to contact Georgia Baker ([email protected]; 802-6543).

Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

Fore! You're invited to participate in our 23rd annual Golf Classic on Wednesday, September 20, at Mercer Oaks West Golf Course. The $135 entry fee covers 18 holes of golf, a cart, tee gift package, lunch, cocktails, dinner, and prizes. We hope that you can

join us for a great time. If you cannot golf, maybe you could support our golf outing by becoming a sponsor or attending the dinner. To register as a golfer or for more information about sponsorship opportunities or attending the dinner, please call Fred Brodzinski (306-3096; [email protected]).

  • Your act of faith enables works of love

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international Catholic organization of lay men and women who seek to help the suffering in a spirit of justice and charity through person-to-person involvement. Vincentians seek through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and the teachings of the Church to bear witness to the love of Christ through their daily lives and in their relationships with those in need. The St. Vincent de Paul Society and its work have been encouraged by the Bishops of Trenton to provide a special means for the laity to participate in the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy through a time-tested organization with national and international support. Your gift continues the mission of St. Vincent de Paul right here in central New Jersey.

    Please make your pledge today.

Fatima Centennial The Gift of a Plenary Indulgence

Pope Francis has granted the faithful the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence* during the centennial celebration the Fatima apparitions. There are 3 ways to obtain the plenary indulgence: 1. Make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal. 2. Visit any church where the image of Our Lady of Fatima is exposed on the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May through October 2017. 3. The elderly and infirm may unite themselves spiritually to the celebrations of the 13th of each month from May to October 2017. The faithful who follow one of these three ways must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: Go to Confession and Communion Be interiorly detached from sin Pray for the intentions of the Pope Recite the Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be They should also pray before the image of our Lady of

    Fatima invoking her help

    * "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." (Canon 992 and Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1471) A plenary indulgence is a complete remission of temporal punishment due to sins and is limited to one per day. An image of Our Lady of Fatima will be exposed in the Sanctuary (SAC) and at the Shrine of Our Lady (OLS) during the Centennial.
