IN THE DIOCESE OF HARRISBURG

It is more important than ever for Catholics to make their voices heard in the public square. You can receive up-to-date information on the most pressing issues that affect the common good through the Catholic Advocacy Network. You will be notified of important legislative news via email and be able to contact your legislators with just a few clicks of the mouse. Visit www.PACatholic.org and click on the Subscribe or Sign Up tabs. Imagine the voices of Pennsylvania’s 3 million Catholics speaking together on matters of public policy.

Roman Catholics and Lutherans of Central Pennsylvania are being urged by their bishops to study, discuss and preach about how the two traditions are moving toward greater understanding and fellowship. Three bishops – the Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, the Rev. Robert L. Driesen of the Upper Susquehanna Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and the Rev. James S. Dunlop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod (ELCA) – together released a pastoral letter calling on Roman Catholic and Lutheran clergy and laity to explore the joint statement Declaration on the Way: Church, Ministry and Eucharist “in their preaching, teaching, and parish planning.” To read the full story and for links to resources: http://www.hbgdiocese.org/dotw

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

This week hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims

will gather in Krakow, Poland for the 14th World Youth

Day (WYD Krakow). This international event, founded

by Saint John Paul II, is a time of spiritual growth and

renewal in the faith for the youth of the Church.

Although many pilgrims are in Poland and some initial

WYD Krakow events have begun, the official Opening

Mass will take place on Tuesday, June 26th and Our Holy

Father, Pope Francis will arrive on Thursday, July 28th.

WYD Krakow the theme for this year is: “Blessed are the

Merciful, for they will be shown Mercy” (Mt. 5:7). I

encourage you to follow the happenings of WYD

Krakow. The major events will be available for viewing

on the web (www.krakow2016.com/en/) and on TV

(typically EWTN, check your local listings), they are

always incredibly powerful moments, even while

watching on a screen!

Bishop Gainer and many pilgrims from our diocese, as

well as pilgrims from around the world, will be

participating in WYD Krakow: please pray for their safe

travels, a joyful experience, and that through this

pilgrimage they are able to become recipients of God’s

mercy and, thus, ambassadors of Divine Mercy to the

world.

Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us!

St. John Paul II, pray for us!

Fr. Wilke

SCHOOL NEWS

Four-year-olds and their parents are invited to register for pre-school now at Harrisburg Catholic Elementary School. Register at the Cathedral campus located at Liberty and Church Streets behind Saint Patrick Cathedral. Parents can choose either half-day or full-day for Pre-School. Questions? Contact the school at 234-3797. Registration for grade 5 is also available, with limited openings in several other classes.

Bishop McDevitt will again be admitting students from China for the 2016-17 school year. We anticipate 20 Chinese students in grades 9-11, all of whom will need homestay families. We need to begin vetting more families to ensure that all our Chinese students are well accommodated. Before we open up the homestay opportunity to the greater community, we want to give local Catholics an opportunity to express interest. Host families will receive $850.00 per month that a student is in their home. In return, host families will provide meals, transportation to and from school and events, a bedroom for each student, and wireless internet connection. In addition, host families will be required to complete a background screening, an on-site home visit, and an Orientation. Medical insurance, uniforms and other campus expenses are covered through the tuition and fees paid by the family in China. If you are interested, but not able to commit to an entire school year, there is also a need for Welcome Families. To move forward with the application/agreement process, please email Elizabeth Quaranta, [email protected].
