Third Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 16, 2018

From the Pastor:

Are you getting that overwhelmed feeling? Christmas is com-ing and you are not ready? Stop thinking, though, so much about presents and parties and decorations. What is the state of your heart? Are you any closer to Jesus than you were at, say, Thanks-giving time?

If the answer is “no,” make a commitment to our Lord today -- this very minute. You will prepare the way for His coming, with His help. Promise to give Him some time – every day this week, maybe a little more the following week.

Can you give Him ten minutes? Ten minutes of silent time today and tomorrow and each day throughout the week. If you already give Him ten minutes a day, consider adding another ten.

Worry less and pray more. Make this the season you let the Christ Child be born in your life in a whole new way. Make this the year that Christmas bursts on the scene with a newfound love in your life for the Incarnation. It will make all the difference to you and to the people who you spend time with – your family, your friends, your co-workers, and even the people you encoun-ter in passing.

Have you thought, too, about adding a work of mercy to your life? If not in these weeks, making a commitment for the new year? Have you thought about reaching out beyond your duties to give of yourself more, in love, to a person or people in need – someone who may be lonely or despairing?

As Jesus comes to us at Christmas, bring His love to others. This isn’t a time simply about material gifts and celebrations. It’s about the joy of eternity come down to earth for our redemp-tion. Share that joy. You can’t share that joy without knowing that joy, by having a real relationship with our Savior. Give God more time this Advent and let it only continue.

With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

Christmas Giving to our Parish

Our special, annual Christmas Collec-tion, fills a very important role in the financial health of our parish. Just as is the case with your own home, the Christmas Collection provides the resources needed to support major maintenance projects in our parish home, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, as well as allowing us to have a reserve of funds available for unexpected and often costly emergencies.

Christmas envelopes may be found in your packet or in the back of the Church and Chapel. If you donate on-line, be sure to add Christmas Donation to your on-line contributions and be as generous as you can.

God Bless You !

As the holiday season approaches

Remembering those we love….

During this coming holiday season, consider a Memorial Donation of Altar Bread and Wine, or

a Memorial Donation for Altar Flowers for a week. Flowers will be placed on the altar in the main Church for the week-end and then moved to the Chapel for weekday Masses. The name of your loved one along with the name of the person making the request will be printed in the Bulletin and they will be remembered in a special way by the Priests as they celebrate Mass. We will also continue to take requests for the Tabernacle Candle Memorials. Please call the Parish Office (359-1230) for more information

Consider a new tradition for Advent!

The parishioners of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart are gener-

ous, regular supporters of the Food pantry at People to People.

During this season of preparation for Christmas, instead of receiving a little treat on each day of Ad-vent, consider creating a food box or basket in your home with the addition of one non-perishable food item each day. Children would love to decorate the boxes, perhaps help you choose items when you shop, and contribute from their own allowance. Sharing the message of taking care of those in our own com-munity who are in need is a powerful lesson.

So many of us are blessed with so much! Your donations may be brought to the parish office or left in the Church lobby.

Remember the Sisters!

As is our tradition at OLSH, we remem-ber the service of the retired Dominican Sis-ters of Blauvelt with small gifts each Christ-mas. Please take one of the tags from the

Giving Tree in the Church lobby and place your gift beneath it.

Winter Survival Needs!

Project Coordinator Needed for one Month!

For the past two years, during the month of January, the parish of OLSH has sup-ported Helping Hands in Rockland County by

collecting warm new socks and gloves and laundry soap to help care for the homeless. While the shelter can now pro-vide laundry facilities, they do not have the budget for soap. OLSH’s donation covered their needs for almost the full year!

The parishioner who has coordinated this in the past has moved to NYC ! The responsibilities are simple: Provide a large box for the back of the church which is emptied week-ly, and transport the items we collect to the shelter at the end of the month. If you - a family—a group of friends or neighbors—can help we would be MOST appreciative!!!! Please consider being a part of this most generous ministry which brings blessings on all of us. Contact the parish office 359-1230 to volunteer or for more info. Thank you!!!!!

Why is one candle not

like all the others?

Advent is a season of prepa-ration and penitence. On the Advent wreath, the three pur-ple candles and one rose can-dle mark the preparation Christians undergo while awaiting the arrival of Christ on Earth. So, why do we need a remind-er to rejoice on the Third Sun-day of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday (Latin for “rejoice”) by

lighting a rose-colored candle on our wreaths and hav-ing priests wear rose-colored vestments at Mass? During a Mass at Casa Santa Maria in Rome, Pope Francis talked about the difference between happi-ness and joy: “To be happy is good, yet joy is something more. It’s another thing, something which does not depend on external motivations, or on passing issues: it is more profound. It is a gift. “To be ‘happy at all moments, at all cost,’ can at the end turn into superficiality and shallowness. This leaves us without Christian wisdom, which makes us dumb, naïve, right? All is joy … no. Joy is something else; it is a gift from the Lord.” If joy is a gift from the Lord, then the Lord Himself is our first and greatest gift, and the only one that will never tarnish or break or fade. Gaudete ( Gow-DAY-tay) Sunday reminds us that the gift has not yet ar-rived, but it’s very near. It takes its name from the first word of the Entrance antiphon “Gaudete in Domino Semper,” which is Latin for the introduction of Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Gaudete Sunday is a moment to stop and reflect on the source of true joy. And if the Advent season has brought causes for stress and sorrow into your life, then lighting the rose candle is an opportunity to take heart and refocus on what the Mass of Christ is all about. Christ is coming. Prepare ye the way of the Lord. Excerpted from: https://www.catholicvote.org/turning-pink-with-joy-on-gaudete
