Mission Statement

Under the protection of the Mother of God, we are a faith community called by the Father,

energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to unite in witnessing and proclaiming

the Good News. We share in friendship, gather in worship, and do proclaim our desire to minister, welcome,

celebrate and extend His Kingdom.

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we celebrate Labor Day. We are blessed to live in a nation where there is often great opportunity. Yet there are challenges. Even in a time of high employment there are

still good people who cannot find jobs. There are others who must work long hours and so are deprived of the rest and family time that is needed for a balanced life. Many workers are still underpaid for the work that they do. In ministry, I encounter people who have jobs but cannot get adequate health care. This Labor Day let us celebrate our opportunities and recommit ourselves to a society that offers just wages and benefits for all. Last weekend I was in Seattle for a 40th Reunion of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps members for 1978-79, of which I was one. It was great seeing people that I had not seen in many years. Over brunch, one of the former members remarked that the JVC and similar organizations of volunteers do so much good. In my year, several members taught in inner city Catholic schools, five of us worked in community mental health, others were community organizers, one was a community health care nurse and yet another assisted in a center for victims of domestic violence. The former volunteer said, “There is so much good that the church does and we are better people for our ministries, and yet it is all lost in the pain of the news these last few weeks. He is so correct. We must tell the story of grace, even as we demand accountability. Ministry sign-up will occur on September 22nd. This will be preceded by information offered by the various ministries. Sign up will be different this year and take less of the Mass time. Religious Education is still in need of volunteers. We can pass on the faith only through your efforts and supports. On October 10th, the seven parishes of Orland Park and Tinley Park are hosting Chris Stefanik. Chris is a dynamic evangelist who proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ boldly and faithfully. St. Elizabeth Seton Parish will be the venue. We had about 150 tickets available and we are down to about half of that number. If interested, you can contact the parish office. Chris will provide a real lift to your faith, something we all can use. In Christ,

Father Mike

Music Ministry Opportunities at Our Lady of the Woods Ilovetohearachoir.Ilovethehumanity...toseethefacesofrealpeopledevotingthemselvestoapieceofmusic.Iliketheteamwork.ItmakesmefeeloptimisticaboutthehumanracewhenIseethemcooper-atinglikethat. ' PAUL MCCARTNEY This is one of my favorite quotes about choirs. In my many years of music ministry, I have ex-perienced the joys of teamwork and community with all the choirs I have had the privilege of direct-ing. Besides the joy of the music itself, the most important aspect of music ministry in a parish is to engage in the prayer of the liturgy. People choose to participate in choirs for various reasons: for many, it is a spiritual experience and a gift of time and talent to the parish; for others, it is a social time and the sense of belonging to a small community; many participate for the love of the music, for singing and playing their instrument, or to improve their skills; and some continue because they have always done so and can’t imagine their week without rehearsal and singing for Sunday Mass! Regardless of your own reasons, I invite you to consider involvement in the music ministry of our parish. For all music groups, I strive to create an environment that is welcoming, prayerful, and a place where individuals with various levels of skill and ability grow, learn, and improve. Please con-sider one of the following opportunities, and feel free to reach out to me if you sing or play an instru-ment. I will be very happy to speak with you and discuss any questions you might have.
