But when they arrived a large crowd had gathered and he took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. We are being challenged to show pity, the way Jesus did. It is perhaps easy to show pity to those we love, to those we care about and those we feel deserve it, but Jesus’ pity is far more extensive. No one is outside or beyond this demand for us to show pity. It is easy to label others and put them into boxes but part of the challenge of pity is recognise how another’s circumstances or situation makes them feel and in offering our understanding, our compassion, our assistance we reveal to them how they are not alone, they are not isolated and are not outside our love and concern because, ultimately, they are not outside God’s love and concern. In our world and in the age of the sound bite, divisions are amplified and no one wants to be on the losing side of an argument. But the problem is there is no room in such circumstances for pity, for trying to look at the situation from another’s perspective or seeing how we are united rather than the ways we are divided because of gender, age, race, likes and dislikes, or any number of other categories. It seems to me, that we are so busy building up walls, desperately trying to keep ourselves, our loved ones, our possessions safe that we have no time to see the other, the outsider as a brother or sister, as another on the journey, rather than the problem or the cause or source of our current difficulties. I am not saying that people who have hurt us or others can simply go back to the way things were or that we should act as if nothing has happened. Trust when it has been damaged or destroyed takes time, real time, to build up again and develop. The pity that Jesus is challenging us to live out, calls us to make an effort to see the other as our brother or sister. It demands that we focus on what unites us rather than what divides. It demands that we do not simply treat others the way their actions deserve but the way we want to be treated. It demands that we look for ways to allow the other to show how they have changed, how they recognise that they have done wrong or even that they are speaking the truth in the first place. Let us pray for each other, that we might strive in this coming week, to take up the opportunities presented to us to care for others, to try and walk in another’s shoes for a while. It calls us to see what unites us rather than focus on what divides, it challenges us to tear down walls rather than build them up. We might try a smile, rather than a frown. We might try to listen to the point of view of someone that we disagree with and not judge them rather than simply jumping to the conclusion they are wrong. We might try contact someone we have been meaning to call but just have not managed yet. We might try and listen to someone, or spend some time with a person, even though we find them difficult or that it will put us out because we do not really have the time. May God bless you and all those whom you love. Kevin Redmond sm 16h Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Jesus took pity on them

In the readings this weekend, we are being asked to reflect upon the idea of Jesus’ pity. When the Twelve returned to Jesus, they were so busy and so many people were coming and going that they did not even have time to eat and so he tried to take them away to a lonely place so that they could be by themselves and rest.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

This weekend and next over 50 of our young brothers and sisters will receive the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time, as we celebrate with them and their family and friends their First Holy Communion.

For most of us, we would have received our First Holy Communion when we were

nine or ten and were Confirmed later when twelve. The Church, since Vatican II, has called for the original order of the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—to be restored. This is the way the Sacraments have been celebrated in our Diocese for a number of years.

The order is important because it reinforces the significance of the Eucharist, this is the Sacrament that completes Initiation, it is when we receive the Eucharist that we are full members of the Church.

Baptism brings us into the Church, it brings us into the death of Christ so that we might experience the resurrection. At Confirmation, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, we are able to make sacrifices, to make an offering of ourselves and at the Eucharist, we become fully one with the Church as we are nourished for our faith journey of dying to self and making sacrifices in our service of others.

This joyful occasion allows us to pause and to reflect on the importance of the Eucharist in our own lives and in the life of the Church.

Dublin, Ireland, has been chosen by Pope Francis to host the next World Meeting of Families from 21-26 August 2018, guided by the theme “The Gos-pel of the Family: Joy for the World”. In preparation for this event we will be having quotes from Pope Francis.

What can be more beautiful than for a father and mother to bless their children at the beginning and ending of each day, to trace on their forehead a sign of the cross, as they did on the day of their bap-tism? (Pope Francis)
