Our Licences and Services at a Glance

CCLI appreciates that copyright can be confusing. We're here to offer licences, resources and advice so that churches can get on with the important things, confident they're acting legally.

What is Copyright?Copyright is an intellectual property right providing owners with economic and moral rights in their work.

The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 protects copyright owners against unauthorised changes and means they are entitled to be paid when their work is used by others.

Who is CCLI?Christian Copyright Licensing International was established to provide a copyright solution when churches began using overhead projectors instead of hymnbooks in their worship.

We now provide a range of annual and short-term licences that protect churches against copyright infringement.

We make legal access to copyright works simple and cost-effective whilst ensuring copyright owners are fairly paid for the use of their work.

Copyright in ChurchWith the growth of the internet and advances in multimedia technology, churches now use a vast range of music, images, video and text in their ministry and social activities.

But staying legal can be a challenge.

Where Do I Start? As every church is different, we find it’s often best to start with a chat.

Our team of copyright experts is here to help you establish whether your current or planned activities may require copyright permission.

Where we can’t license you we usually know who can.

Call 01323 436100 or email [email protected]

Alternatively, you’ll find lots of information and support on our website: uk.ccli.com

The Church Copyright Licence (CCL)uk.ccli.com/ccl

Legally reproduce the words and sheet music to the vast majority of worship songs and hymns:

» Project song words from a computer or acetates

» Print song/service sheets or hymnbook supplements

» Create customised musical arrangements where no published version is available

» Record services including the live worship for those unable to attend

The Music Reproduction Licence (MRL)uk.ccli.com/mrl

Add the MRL to your CCL to legally photocopy, scan or electronically share typeset pages from music publications and sheet music files:

» Photocopy/scan pages from many song books or sheet music files downloaded from the internet

» Share digital files such as PDFs (e.g. by email or via a network of screens)

» A typography right usually exists in typeset pages/files published in the last 25 years even if the music or song itself is no longer in copyright

The CLA Church Licenceuk.ccli.com/cla

As agents for the Copyright Licensing Agency CCLI provides a licence to photocopy from many non-music publications:

» Photocopy pages from study books, journals, magazines, children’s activity books and drama scripts etc.

» Always check the copyright information printed within the publication to confirm whether or not permission is required.

» A typography right often exists in typeset pages/documents even if the content itself is no longer in copyright

The Church Video Licence (CVL)uk.ccli.com/cvl

Legally show film scenes in services and full-length films in socials and outreach events:

» The most convenient and cost-effective way of obtaining permission to show thousands of movies and videos

» Covers most major studios/producers

» A PRS for Music licence is required when showing films outside of Acts of Worship to cover music on the soundtrack

» Includes free standard access to ScreenVue.com, a website of movie scene ideas for ministry

The PRS for Music Church Licenceuk.ccli.com/prs

Required when live or recorded music is played on church premises outside of Acts of Worship:

» Covers up to six concerts/recitals a year

» A PPL Church Licence is also required when playing commercial music recordings (e.g. CDs/MP3s)

» Required when showing films to cover music on the soundtrack

» Music played in Acts of Worship (e.g. regular services, weddings/funerals) is exempt

The PPL Church Licenceuk.ccli.com/ppl

Required in addition to a PRS for Music licence when playing music recordings outside of Acts of Worship:

» Play CDs/MP3s at events, coffee mornings, parent/toddler groups, socials etc.

» Music played in Acts of Worship (e.g. regular services, weddings/funerals) is exempt

» Both licences are required because PPL and PRS for Music cover different rights within a recording

» Not required when showing films
