FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

Dear Friends of the Virginia Capitol Foundation,

As we reflect on the 2018-2019 fiscal year, we are proud to enumerate the Virginia Capitol Foundation’s accomplishments, and even more delighted to realize it was an anniversary year for us: The Virginia Capitol Foundation was founded as the Virginia Capitol Preservation Foundation 15 years ago in 2004. The year the Foundation was formed was certainly eventful, but looking back over the last 12 months, we can see monumental changes and accomplishments to mark a truly successful fiscal year aided by the support of donors like you!

Through the years, the Virginia Capitol Foundation has had the honor and privilege of serving the Capitol and fulfilling our mission to restore, preserve and interpret this incredible space … with your help. The lasting impact we’ve had in the past fifteen years can be seen today in the grounds, the art and artifacts in the buildings (the George Washington porthole portrait), the new monuments in place (Thomas Jefferson, Architect of Liberty statue), and the educational initiatives (the Keepers of the Flame video). With the vision of our Board, the dedication of our staff, and the generosity of our donors, we have accomplished much!

When we look around Capitol Square, we can see the changing landscape. Last year, the Indian Tribute, Mantle, was fully funded, completed and dedicated. This year, just up the western sloping dell, the Wall of Honor on Voices from the Garden, the Virginia Women’s Monument, was unveiled during a ceremony in October. The statues of the women continue to be sculpted and cast in bronze and will soon be installed on the plaza.

While we’ve accomplished much in the past 15 years, we know there is more to do ahead. To that end, the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Capitol Foundation will embark on a strategic planning session in the 2020 fiscal year to steer our focus and shape our future direction. We know that exciting new projects, such as the Capitol Square Visitor Experience (via a partnership with the Capitol Square Preservation Council) and the installation and completion of the Women’s Monument, will guide our work this year. Meanwhile, we’ll continue to coordinate the bricks, benches, ornaments and other traditional VCF “offerings” that are wonderful ways for people to be a part of Capitol Square.

Your support makes our work possible, and we truly appreciate your Annual Fund gifts. Last year, we reached – and surpassed! – our Annual Fund goal, and we aim to do the same this year. Our Annual Fund support is what keeps the Virginia Capitol Foundation in operation. We’ll be starting our campaign in the fall of 2020, and we look forward to reaching out to you for your continued support.

With warm regards,

Following the groundbreaking in December of 2017, this ceremony marked a major achievement in the completion of the monument. In addition to the granite plaza, the sundial and the circular stone bench, the ceremony also highlighted the Wall of Honor, a large glass wal l inscr ibed with the names of 230 Virginia w o m e n w h o d e m o n s t r a t e d notable achievement, made a significant contribution or set an important example within their chosen field of endeavor, their region, or at the state or national level. As the fiscal agent for the Virginia Women’s Monument, the Virginia Capitol Foundation leads the fundraising efforts for this notable project.

Board Chair Susan Allen presented the seventh annual ornament to First Lady Pamela Northam in November at a special ceremony that included a proclamation from Governor Ralph Northam honoring the Capitol Police’s 400 years of service.

Capitol Celebration

Held in late January during the General Assembly session, this year’s Capitol Celebration took place in the Rotunda and guests inc luded General Assembly members, former Delegates and Senators, donors, friends, and corporate partners. This year’s celebration – the sixth annual – featured the unveiling of the 1730s Speaker’s Chair which was on temporary view in the Old House Chamber.

One such project is raising money for the restoration and conservation of the Battleship USS Virginia Silver Service, a 50-piece set silver service crafted in 1906. This treasured part of the Commonwealth’s collection of fine and decorative art includes a monumental punc h b owl adorned with portrait medallions of Virginia’s presidents and a tray decorated with Jefferson’s Rotunda at the University of Virginia.

Capitol Visitor Experience

A joint effort between the Capitol Square Preservation Council and

the Virginia Capitol Foundation, this “way finding” initiative, led by C&G Partners of New York, will create a unified, comprehensive approach for visitors across Capitol Square. Phase 1 is focused on interpretive way finding signage and will be commencing soon; Phase 2, which is further on the horizon, is focused on digital learning through a comprehensive web site.

D e d i c a t e d to the con-t r i b u t i o n s o f A f r i c a n A m e r i c a n V i r g i n i a n s in the fight for freedom,

the Virginia Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission’s Emancipation and Freedom Monument will feature a 12-foot bronze statue representing newly freed slaves and will highlight no-table African American Virgin-ians. The monument, designed by Thomas Jay Warren of Oregon, is targeted for completion in 2020 on Brown’s Island in Richmond. In 2019, the sculptor completed work on life-size clay figures for the monument, which were 3D scanned, rescaled as 12-foot figures, 3D printed as casting patterns, and cast in bronze at Artworks Foundry in Berkley, Calif., for assembly. Work on the monument’s plaza at the head of the Fifth Street pedestrian bridge began in late 2019. The V irginia Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is raising funds to support completion of the project. The Virginia Capitol Foundation is the fiscal agent for this project and assists with grants and gift processing.

Benches

Each year, the Virginia Capitol Foundation is proud to inscribe benches on Capitol S quare honoring loved ones of our constituents, recognizing civil service, or commemorating a m i l e s t o n e . T h i s y e a r, t h e committee planning the 25th anniversary of Governor George Allen’s inauguration adopted a bench in celebration of his service to the state of Virginia. The bench will be installed in the 2020 fiscal year. The cast iron and cedar benches are situated along Monument Walk – the brick step pathway between the George Washington Equestrian statue and the Fountain – as well on the north end of Capitol Square and surrounding the fountain by Washington Hall. A gift of $3,000 provides for the restoration of the bench, annual care of the bench, and a handsome bronze recognition plaque. The Department of General Services cares and restores the benches and partners with the Virginia Capitol Foundation on this project.

In October 2018, Ric Arenstein joined Sara Belle November to sit on the bench dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Neil November.

Statement of Financial ActivitiesJuly 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019

As the fiscal agent for the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission and the Virginia Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission, the Virginia Capitol Foundation raises funds and handles direct/indirect expenditures/payments to build these monuments.

Last fiscal year represented the completion of the Indian Tribute and this fiscal year represents the building of the Virginia Women’s Monument as it nears completion. This year also represents a fundraising year for the Emancipation Proclamation and Freedom Monument.

The expenses for the Virginia Capitol Foundation represent direct expenses to sustain our operations, in addition to indirect expenses to support the work on behalf of those monuments and other projects. Note that some expenditures during this fiscal year, including the Women’s Monument and Capitol Visitor Experience, are using funds raised last fiscal year.
