Saying Good-Bye to a dear old saint is hard, but also reminds me of the promises of scripture. It reminds me how short life is. So I’ve been reading through The Imitation of Christ in my devotional reading. It was written by Thomas a’ Kempis about 1420 A.D. The copy I have was translated from Latin and published in 1842, so I’ve taken the liberty to replace some wording to make it more readable to the modern reader. Here we go…

“The end of the present life will speedily come. Consider, then, what degree of preparation you’ve done that will stand the test. Today a man lives, tomorrow is not seen, and once he is gone it doesn’t take long for any memory of him to fade. O, the hardness and insensibility of the human heart, that thinks only for present concerns and disregards the future! In every thought and action, govern your spirit as if you would die today. If your righteousness and reward were found in Christ, you wouldn ’t fear death, however near it may be.

It is better to avoid sin, than to shun death. If you are not prepared for that awful event today, how will you be

prepared tomorrow? Tomorrow is uncertain, and how will you know that tomorrow will be yours?

What does it matter to live a long life, when improving your life is so temporary and difficult? Length of days often increases the weight of sin instead of improving us. Would to God that we could live well for one day! Though death be terrible, a longer life may be dangerous. Blessed is the man who anticipates his death, and keeps himself in preparation for its approach.

How wise and happy is the man who continually endeavors to be as holy in everyday life, as he wishes to be found in his day of death. Live in such a manner that you can rejoice on the day of death rather than fear. Learn NOW to die to the world, that you may begin to live with Christ. Learn to despise created things, that being delivered from every earthly burden, that you may freely rise to Him.”

I realize death isn’t a happy topic, but I’ve been thinking about it lately. Saying Good-Bye to a dear old saint is hard, but also reminds me of the promises of scripture. It reminds me how short life is. It tells me how much we rely on the temporary things of this world for comfort and security. Ignoring death doesn’t make it go away. For the Christian, it is a graduation - a commencing into the presence of God and life everlasting. O, Lord, let me live with eternity in mind, fearless and confident, resting in You.

Orange Swan Free Store Building Project Matthew 25:34-36 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

The Orange Swan Free Store is a ministry of GCC that meets needs in our community and surrounding area of southeast Kansas. Providing clothing, household items, and furniture - free of charge - to those in need due to house fires or other health or life crises. We work through area agencies and word of mouth - there is never a shortage of needs. There is, however, a waiting list for furniture items and appliances, but plenty of clothing and household items available the first Saturday of every month from 9:00am to 2:00pm. On average, about 50 families/month come on the first Saturday, and there are several deliveries of furniture and appliances throughout the month to people in a six county area. In order to have the Free Store continue to meet the needs of our community, as God has called us to do. Right now inventory is in several storage places in Galesburg & Erie, but we have felt led by God to place all of the ministry under one roof, with store front, sorting, and furniture together to increase efficiency and effectiveness. We plan to break ground and get the building roughed in when we have raised $50,000 toward the project. We have about $36,000 saved so far. Total estimated cost of the 40’ X 75’ building is $75,000. Won’t you join us in making this project a reality?
