In-situ testing

Standard Penetration Test

Thirty four (34) standard penetration tests, Nspt values, were carried out in the

boreholes using the 60o solid cone (CPT) in place of the standard split barrel sampler.

The tests were carried out in accordance with Geotechnical Investigation and Testing,

Part 3 Standard penetration test, BS EN ISO 22476-3:2005+A1:2011. The data is

presented on the exploratory logs accompanying this report.

Survey and Drawings

The ‘as built’ exploration locations were subsequently surveyed using Trimble 5700/5800

GPS equipment to the Ordinance Survey Irish Transverse Mercator system of co-

ordinates (ITM) and elevations to Malin Head datum. A location plan has been produced

and accompanies this report drawing ref: P16128-SI-02 – P16128-SI-05. The survey

data is summarized as follows:

Published Geology

The geology of the study area (GSI 1:100,000 mapping Sheet 17) is characterised by

Visean (VIS) and Walsortian (WA) Limestones. A search of the GSI well data indicated

bedrock 18m to 25m depth at a location (well ref: 1411NEW020/033) 2.5km north of the

study area. Bedrock outcrops was noted 730m north of the WwTP site. Teagasc subsoil

mapping indicates that the area is underlain by lake sediment, alluvial deposits and

glacial deposits derived from Devonian Sandstone. Historical site investigations

associated with Gas Transmission main (Ref: 1536) indicated glacial deposits to a depth

of 3.0m.

Ground conditions

The full details of the ground conditions encountered are provided for on the exploratory

records accompanying this report. The records provide descriptions, in accordance with

BS 5930 (1999) +A2: 2010 and Eurocode 7, Geotechnical Investigation and Testing,

The site was characterised by soft to firm slightly sandy SILT deposits 0.9m to 1.8m

thick overlying stiff slightly sandy gravelly CLAY deposits with Cobble and Boulder

content to depths between 2.7m bgl to >10.0m bgl. Localised shallow bedrock

(Limestone) was identified <1.0m bgl in the vicinity of TP15.

Groundwater was recorded when encountered during boring and trial pit excavations

over a period of 20 minutes, noting any changes that may occur. Groundwater levels

were also monitored at start and end of drilling shifts.

It should be noted that the normal rate of boring may not permit the recording of

equilibrium groundwater levels for any one groundwater water strike where casing may

exclude low volume flows as the borehole progresses in stiff glacial deposits.

Groundwater conditions observed in the borings or pits are those appertaining to the

period of the investigation. Groundwater levels may be subject to diurnal, seasonal and

climatic variations and can also be affected by drainage conditions, tidal variations etc.

The groundwater regime should be assessed from standpipe well installations, where

available.

A summary of groundwater is presented below and detailed on the exploratory records,

herein.

Geotechnical Review

Ground model

Based on the site investigations, alluvial deposits of soft to firm2 slightly sandy SILT (MH-

MV) are present to depths 0.9m bgl to 1.8m bgl overlying glacial deposits of stiff slightly

sandy gravelly CLAY deposits with Cobble and Boulder content (CL-CI) to depths

between 2.7m bgl to >10.0m bgl. Localised shallow bedrock (medium strong

LIMESTONE, RC03) was identified 0.6m bgl to 1.6m bgl in the vicinity of TP15.

Elsewhere along the route bedrock, assumed Limestone was at a depth 2.7m bgl

(TP13), this being below the expected invert level to depths exceeding 3.0m bgl up to

10.0m bgl. MUDSTONE was encountered at RC04 below a depth 8.9m bgl.

Groundwater was typically encountered between 1.7m bgl and 3.5m bgl along the pipe

route. Mottled SILT deposits suggested possible fluctuating groundwater levels.

Equilibrium groundwater was taken to be between 55.5mOD to 55.9mOD at the Maigue

river. Artesian groundwater conditions were recorded at BH04 (56.15mOD) + 0.3m bgl.

Characteristic properties

The deposits were differentiated by alluvial SILT of high to very high plasticity deposits

(MH/ MV) in the upper 1.0m bgl to 1.8m bgl. These being underlain by glacial low to

intermediate plasticity CLAY deposits (CL-CI).

2 It shall be noted tactile assessment described stiff sandy SILT deposits, N100 H data indicated soft to firm deposits. The probe data is taken as characteristic of the soil strength being a physical measurement of a soil property. Seasonal moisture content may influence tactile assessment where also the deposits typically transitioned to higher strength with depth. Visually there is a distinct change from fine grained (SILT) deposits to more granular mixed glacial deposits (CLAY).

Natural moisture content, w ranged between 28% to 62% in the upper alluvial deposits,

(MH-MV). In the glacial deposits (CL-CI) typically below 2.0m bgl, natural moisture

content ranged between 10% to 34%.

The variation in liquid limit highlighted the boundary between the two strata identified.

(kPa) = Nspt x f1 (Stroud, 1975). This yielded undrained shear strenght between 15kPa to

35kPa in the upper 1.5m bgl. Below this shear strength increased with values between

42kPa to 86kPa.

A review of natural moisture content, w to plastic limit, PL ratio, w/PL indicated soft to

firm deposits (w/PL >1.2) in the upper 1.5m bgl becomming firm to stiff (w/PL <1.2)

below this depth. (C504, Engineering in glacial tills). Soft deposits were present to

depths of 3.5m bgl adjacent to the existing watercourse(s) beyond DP23/ TP23 and

BH04. It was also noted that at BH07 natural moisture content yielded w/PL >1.2

indicative of soft deposits while Nspt data indicated stiff deposits.

The rock mass characterization has been established using the Rock Quality

Designation, (RQD, Deere, 1964), Rock Mass Rating (RMR) using the Geo-mechanics

System (Bieniawski, 1989) and Geologic Strength Index (GSI, Hoek and Brown 1997,

2002). A review of the rock properties, strength (UCS, 45MPa), fracture spacing (30mm

– 380mm) and condition (slight weathering and clay smeared fractures), Rock Quality

Designation (RQD, 90% to 100%) and groundwater (assumed ‘damp’) was undertaken.

A rock mass rating of 57 was provided indicating Class III fair, Limestone, with a

recommended angle of friction 32o and cohesion 250kPa. A safe bearing pressure of

2.5MPa is expected in the rock mass in accordance with BS8004 figure 1 for Class 2

rock.

Foundations

It is expected to construct the pipe invert within the stiff CLAY deposits typically below

1.5m bgl. Approaching the watercourse the depth to invert is expected to increase to

found within the stiff deposits.

A presumed bearing pressure of 150kPa is expected (BS8004, Code of practice for

Foundations) of the stiff deposits. Taking a characteristic Nspt value of 12 an undrained

shear strength of 72kPa is recommended. Allowing for a partial factor of safety 1.4, (and

bearing capacity factor, NC = 5.14, Skempton 1951) an ultimate bearing pressure

between 264kPa is expected of the stiff glacial deposits.

The low plasticity (CL) was indicative of low compressibility and so settlement is not

expected to exceed 25mm. An allowable bearing pressure of 150kPa is recommended

for settlement up to 25mm for foundations in the stiff CLAY deposits as well as for thrust

and anchor block design.

At the Maigue river crossing, BH04 and BH05 the invert shall be below 2.0m bgl

(53.8mOD) to 4.0m bgl (53.3mOD). A characteristic Nspt of 18 is recommended. A

characteristic shear strength of 90kPa is expected (f1 = 5), allowing for a partial factor of

safety 1.4, an ultimate bearing pressure of 330kPa is expected at invert level within the

stiff glacial deposit. Design for buoyancy can be expected with artesian groundwater in

this area. Anchor blocks shall be considered.

At the initial Maigue river outfall, BH06 the invert shall be below 2.0m bgl (54.5mOD). A

characteristic Nspt of 17 is recommended. A characteristic shear strength of 85kPa is

expected (f1 = 5), allowing for a partial factor of safety 1.4, an ultimate bearing pressure

of 312kPa is expected at invert level within the stiff glacial deposit.

At the revised Maigue river outfall, BH07 the invert shall be below 2.0m bgl (54.5mOD).

A characteristic Nspt of 18 is recommended. A characteristic shear strength of 90kPa is

expected (f1 = 5), allowing for a partial factor of safety 1.4, an ultimate bearing pressure

of 330kPa is expected at invert level within the stiff glacial deposit (CI). A high fines

content 86% was measured. The intermediate plasticity (CI) was indicative of some

degree of compressibility. Taking an factored (1.4) elastic modulus, E of 12MPa for the

stiff Clay, an allowable bearing pressure of 100kPa is recommended for settlement up to

10mm for foundations in the stiff CLAY deposits, subject to a review of the outfall

chamber geometry (presently assumed 2m sq. at a depth below 2.0m bgl).

Hardstandings

In the upper 1.0m soft deposits were identified. Trafficability of plant may be problematic.

Capping of 600mm is expected for a CBR 1%3 (NRA DMRB Vol 7 Pt 2A, TD25-26/10

Figure 4.1. A California bearing ratio, CBR of <0.5% was measured at BH04 and BH06

in the upper 1.0m correlating with low N100 H data and high moisture content in the high

plasticity Silt deposits.

Backfill to excavations

It is expected that excavate material will be used to backfill the trench excavations it

shall be considered segregating the Topsoil, upper soft SILT deposits and lower stiff

CLAY deposits. The lower CLAY should form the bulk of the backfill along with pipe

bedding and surround. Disposal of the SILT deposits is recommended where re-

compaction is expected to be poor.

Excavations

Excavation shall be by means of hydraulic excavator. Excavations in the glacial deposits

can expect to encounter coarse Cobble and Boulder particles. Localised excavation in

hard strata, Limestone will be required in the vicinity of TP15. Excavation within the

medium strong Limestone is expected to be by means of hydraulic ripping with some

breaking.

3 Taking shear strength 15kPa – 35kPa where Cu (kPa)= CBR (%) x 15 a lower limit of CBR1% to CBR2% is expected.

Excavation below the groundwater level shall be required at the proposed Maigue river

crossing.

Existing ponds

Dynamic probes were undertaken along the existing ponds where it is proposed to

construct the pipe outfall. The N100 H data indicated soft deposits, su <40kPa to depth

2.5m bgl. Below this depths there was an increase in strength. The pipe invert should be

constructed within the firm deposits. Regarding the soft deposits some basic form of

remediation of the pond lining/ construction should be undertaken. Trench boxes are

recommended to prevent failure of the cutting for the outfall pipe.

Groundwater

Groundwater was typically not encountered during the fieldworks within the expected

depth to invert <2.0m bgl, with the exception of the Maigue river crossing and outfall.

Slow seepage is expected in the glacial deposits with equilibrium groundwater level

taken at the underside of the SILT deposits.

Design against uplift is required adjacent to the Maigue river crossing and outfall with

groundwater was taken to be between 55.5mOD to 55.9mOD, noting artesian conditions

at BH04, groundwater 56.15mOD. The recommended invert at the crossing lies below

53.3mOD to 54.5mOD, being below the groundwater level.

With d10 assumed <0.063mm permeability k is of the order <10-5ms-1, describing low

permeability (C113, Control of groundwater for temporary works). Groundwater control in

excavations shall be by sump and pump systems in low permeability glacial deposits.

It was noted during the fieldworks seepage was observed with limited groundwater flow,

typically below 2m to 3m depths. Localised Sand lenses encountered at BH05 may

slump in open excavations over the interval, 53.8mOD to 53.3mOD.

Chemical

pH (8.0 – 9.0) and sulphate (<0.01g/l – 0.049g/l) data indicated design class XA1 in

accordance with EN206-1:2000 Table 2 or design sulphate class DS-1 in accordance

with BRE digest for concrete in aggressive ground (SD1; 2005).
