Our region, Voiotia Voiotia took its name by the

king Voiotos who was the sun of gods and nymphs. After the Trojan war(1194-1184 B.C.) and the destruction of Troy, there was a huge wave of internal immigration of all the ancient Greek tribes. The people of Voiotia used to live in Thessalia when they decided to move to another area in Greece(Voiotia).

Our village Oinofyta…

Oinofyta is part of the municipality of Tanagra, which was formed with a royal decree on April 8th 1835

The older name of Oinofyta (though not official) was “Staniates”. The name came from the mud huts which people of Voiotia used to protect their herds during winter while Greece was conquered by Ottoman Turks.

Dilesi It is a small coastal town

of Voiotia. It is near Asopos river and it’s a remarkable town mentioned by all ancient Greek writers.

Dilesi was named after its first residents who were the people of the sacred island of Apollo, Dilos. They used to consider Dilesi as a sanctuary which they visited in order to worship the gods of their island, Apollo and Diana.

Oinofyta in ancient times The people of Voiotia were

referred to as great warriors. They were fighting against the Athenians in the memorable battles of Oinofyta and Tanagra. It is said that the battles were so fierce that even the Gods felt sorry for them.

There is a statue of Goddess Athina, depicting her leaning against her spear, sorrowful and melancholic about the loss of so many warriors.

Oinofyta in the era of the Crusades

In 1204 AD both Voiotia and Athens were conquered by the crusaders.

A French monarch was ruling the area for over 107 years until 1311 AD and the people of the area were working as slaves in their own fields.

Between 1311 and 1387 the area was ruled by Spanish( Catalonians) who were harsh and savage, provoking feelings of hatred and fear to the local people. It is the time when Arvanites(Albanian people who immigrated central Greece in the Middle ages) settled Attica and Voiotia.

The residues of the Catalonian era are huge, stone towers which were used as fortresses in the battle.

The Ottoman empire (1453-1821) When Greece was

captured by Ottoman Turks, the productive land of Voiotia became property of the Sultan. The fertile fields of Voiotia were distributed to Turkish officers

The people of Dervenohoria who were not captured by the Turks but signed a treaty, managed to remain relatively autonomous and preserve the right to cultivate their fields.

The fighter “Giannis Liapis”

All the villages of the area were desolated during the Turkish conquest. This is why so few fighters from Voiotia were mentioned in the Independence War of 1821. The most prominent of them was Giannis Liapis. As a compensation for his services the Greek state gave him farmland of about 400 acres.

The local council has given his name to a central street of our town in order to honour him.
