Dear friends in Christ, It is a difficult task to say goodbye to the Our Saviour’s Lutheran faith family after serving with you in ministry and mission since August of 2010. Julie and I want to express our heartfelt appreciation for all you have done with us and for us. Your prayers, your presence, your friendship have all been truly amazing and a blessing beyond measure. As our time together comes to a close there are numerous people to thank and a multitude of highlights that I believe give us reason for rejoicing. Throughout our time together God has provided me the privilege of being your servant-leader, to partner in ministry and mission with a talented and committed staff, a hard-working, faithful and delightful team of congregational leaders, and a wonderful family of believers I have come to love and appreciate. Yes, throughout the years there have been challenges we have faced as a congregation, but let me say that, for me, the joys of our time together far outweigh the difficulties we have experienced. I want to encourage everyone not to lose sight of what God has in mind for each new day he blesses us with. Be diligent in discerning the Lord’s will for your life, for your family, and for your faith family. Live your life for the Lord, giving sacrificially in response to what our gracious God has first given you! God bless all of you and the investment of your precious time, talents and treasures in your future ministry and mission together. In closing I leave you with these words from our Lord, the Apostle Paul writing to the Christian community in Colossae: “For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” Colossians 1:9-12 In His Service, Pastor Doug Opp

4K for Cancer OSLC hosted 25 Baltimore to Portland (Team Portland) bike riders for meals and an overnight stay on June 28th. Bikers enjoyed the Farmer’s Market, Music in the Park and were very grateful for the food and lodging provided. Team Portland began their journey in Baltimore on June 3rd and will arrive in

Portland on August 12th, having spent 70 days and 4000+ miles riding across America. 4K for Cancer is a program of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, which is a non-profit organization that

changes lives by creating a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. Since 2001, groups of college students have undertaken journeys across America with the goal of offering hope, inspiration and support to those affected by cancer along the way. Last year over a million dollars was raised to support young adults affected by cancer. 2018 represents the 17th year

the 4K is biking across the country and the fourth year OSLC has hosted bike riders.

Pastoral Transition Update

As we near the end of summer and the beginning of fall, many things continue to transpire within our faith community that will help us to have a smooth transition as Pastor prepares to take his next journey in life. We have been blessed to have him and his wife as part of our life journey over the past 8 years and the people he will touch through his new position at Intermountain Healthcare Hospice will be blessed to know him as well. The council is planning a send off coffee for Pastor Doug and Julie from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, August 12th at the church. Please plan to attend and invite anyone you feel would like to give their well wishes to Pastor Doug and Julie as this event will be open to the public. The council also has three planned interviews with potential Intentional Interims scheduled for late July. We are hopeful these will be fruitful meetings and will be able to have made a decision on who will lead the church through this transitional period by the time Pastor moves to Utah. We will provide a congregational update as soon as we have more information to share. As always please contact myself or any other council member with any questions or comments you may have through this transitional period. Thank you all for the support and hard work everyone provides throughout the year at OSLC. Hope to see you all on the 12th!

Council President Dan Madsen

Help Make Our Church Shine!

God has so graciously blessed us with a beautiful place to worship, grow & learn! Let’s all show our thanks by pitching in to help make God’s church shine inside and outside!

Just like in our own homes, a little extra time and effort is periodically needed to keep things looking great.

Join in helping our Building & Property Committee and Custodians complete a few extra tasks on

Saturday, Aug. 25th from 8:00-11:00 a.m. If you can’t stay for the entire time, come for as long as you are able.

Breakfast pizza, doughnuts, coffee and juice will be awaiting hungry helpers! A variety of tasks, ranging from light maintenance to extra cleaning (which are not part of our Custodian’s job responsibilities), are needing done so there is something for everyone to do!

If you are not able to come on August 25th, a list of tasks needing attention is posted on the entryway bulletin board which may be completed on your own time.

Let’s all do our part and help where we can!

Five Best Good for You Foods (From Eating Well’s Nutrition Editor, Brierley Wright)

God is ever bountiful. He has blessed us to live in Iowa, where we can enjoy gardening and shopping at farmer’s markets. Here are five

good for you foods to enjoy at this time of the year.

1. Green Beans: High fiber foods like green beans can help you prevent weight gain and even

promote weight loss-without dieting. Also try: Raspberries, Chickpeas (garbanzo beans), strawberries.

2. Salmon: The Omega 3 fatty acids in oily fish can boost your skin’s defenses against UV damage. Even as little as five ounces can help prevent the development of precancerous skin lesions. Also try: Tuna.

3. Watermelon: Eating foods that are full of water, such as B (92%) helps keep you satisfied on fewer calories. Watermelon is a good source of Vitamin C and lycopene. Also try: cucumbers (95%), Salad greens (90%), and strawberries (91%).

4. Blueberries: Eating just under a cup of mixed berries daily for 8 weeks can increase your levels of “good” HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressures. Also try: Red raspberries and strawberries.

5. Tomatoes: Eating more Vitamin C-rich foods- such as tomatoes- may be the secret to smoother skin. It may lower the risk of wrinkles and age-related dryness in middle aged women. Also helps protect against UV rays. Also try: Oranges, strawberries, and broccoli.

Summer Special Music Special music (vocal or

instrumental) is needed for Sunday worship through

September 2nd. Please contact a Worship Committee member,

Jane Weber, the church office or sign up on the sheet located on the bulletin board. Thank you!
