Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

Welcome backI would like to welcome everyone back to school and hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break. This term is looking busy with an NRMA safety day next Monday, K-2 Athletic Carnival in Week 2, Education Week\Grandfriend’s Day in Week 3, PCS Music Festival and Green Day in Week 4, Musica Viva Week 5, NAPLAN results in Week 6 and Book Week parade in Week 7. It almost feels like we need a holiday now.

School Athletics CarnivalIn the last week of last term we had our school Athletics Carnival. The Carnival ran smoothly due to Mr Waters’ fantastic organisation and the excellent behaviour of our students. Fortunately we were just getting on the buses when the heavens opened.

Education weekThis year we will be celebrating Grandfriend’s Day in Education Week on Wednesday, 29th July. To reduce the traffic congestion around the school we will be operating a free shuttle bus service to and from the school from Narrabeen RSL club. The first bus will leave the car park at 9:25am and the last bus with leave the school for the RSL at 12:15pm. The bus will run continuously and I urge parent to use this service.

NRMA Safety DayNext Monday we will our free NRMA Safety Day. Parents are invited to the first session. More information about the day can be found in the newsletter.

Student AchievementCongratulations to Macka H (2C) and Bailey H (5C) who recently competed in the NSW State Karting titles in Dubbo. Both boys drove extremely well with Macka coming 4th in the Cadet 9 Division and Bailey 10th in the Cadet 12 Division. Well done boys!

School Account FeesIn the last week of last term we again send out school accounts to those people who may have forgotten to pay their school fees. At the end of last term we had over $22, 000 in unpaid fees and this included payment for the Art Program and Gym program which have already been completed. I would like to thank our parents who paid over the holiday period and would ask everyone to please pay their accounts as soon as possible. It would be a shame to have to cancel programs such as the Art Program over parents’ refusal to pay. If you have any difficulty in making payments please let me know and all information will be kept in confidence.

P&C meetingThe next P&C meeting is Wednesday, 29th July at 7:15pm in the staffroom. I look forward to seeing you there.

... STORMWATER FILMYear 6 Students from Elanora Heights Public School and the Coastal

Environment Centre Make a Film about StormwaterA group of Year 6 students were fortunate enough to have been selected to write and then perform in a short film on Stormwater. The brief was that the film had to convince the, ‘not so environmentally aware’ members of the local community, that the only thing that should be going down the drain is rain.

Students were amazed at how time consuming making a film is. So many filming holdups were caused by barking dogs, people talking and cars driving past. The actors had to deliver their lines and not make any mistakes.

Thanks to Ella, Anneliese, Jesselyn, Abby, Stephanie, Mia and Lili for an excellent shoot. Thanks also to Jules from the Coastal Environment Centre and the two patient, professional film makers.

Hopefully, we will launch the film in Green Week.

NRMA Science & Road Safety Day: Monday 20th JulyOur school will be hosting an NRMA Science and Road Safety Day aimed at helping our students learn how to stay safe on the road. During the day students will participate in road safety shows and then complete Road Safety Workbooks to reinforce the messages covered in that show.

We hope you will talk to your child about their day and what they learned about road safety. When your children bring home their workbooks, look inside for a four-page Parent Insert on child road safety. It is a quick reference guide with tips and hints on how to keep your child safe.

We would also like to invite all parents to come and watch the Road Safety Show. at 9:00am. It will give you a great snapshot of road safety and what your child is learning.

Students are encouraged to bring their bicycle helmet with them for their visit.

The program is:Years 3 & 4 from 9:00am to 9:50amKindy from 10am to 10:55amYears 5 & 6 from 11:20am to 12:20pmYears 1 & 2 from 1:45pm to 2:40pm

... PREMIER’S SPORTING CHALLENGE 2015...|... Ms BoslerIt’s Term 2, Week 1 and the Premier’s Sporting Challenge has begun! This is the 7th year of participation in this initiative designed to get ‘more students, more active, more often’. Apart from the obvious long-term health and lifestyle benefits to students, our on-going participation and commitment to the PSC attracts a ‘loyalty’ grant. This grant enables the school to continue to purchase new PE/Sports equipment.

This afternoon, students 3 - 6 will bring home their Premier’s Sporting Challenge Logs that they will use to record time spent engaged in physical activity and sport for the 10 week period (ie. weeks 1 - 10 inclusive). For students in K - 2, the usual practice is for them to fill in their logs each day at a time suited to individual class routines, eg. during morning ‘admn’ time or after lunch before DEAR. Some K - 2 teachers might send the logs home instead.

The time accrued includes both week days and weekends so the PSC is really easy to achieve for the students at EHPS given their involvement in so many activities!

Please encourage your child/children to engage in many different forms of physical activity and/or sport during the Challenge and help them record ‘time’ in their logs each day.

Teachers will be monitoring the Challenge using a PSC class wall chart to keep each child ‘on track’.

Good luck Elanora students with the K - 2 challenge ‘go for gold’ and the Years 3 - 6 challenge of attaining the highest award - diamond!

I’d love to hear from any child/family participating in some ‘out there’ forms of physical activity to share with others in the newsletter, eg. abseiling, parasailing, scuba diving or whatever!

.. P&C Voluntary ContributionEach year the P&C Association facilitates a voluntary contribution by parents to support the education and welfare of our children.

We urge all parents to donate generously as public education in NSW is always under financial pressure. Along with all other schools, new syllabuses are currently being introduced but without matching funding to adequately support necessary resources. For example, the school is in urgent need of readers for the new English syllabus. In time, resources other than P&C contributions will cover these needs but when this will occur and the extent of support are unknown. Our community has the means to bridge funding gaps and keep our children at the front of the curve to set them up in strong position for the remainder of their education.

Funds raised by the P&C have also gone to the provision of the re-developed bottom oval and new PSSA sports uniforms. The school has identified resources that include more computer tablets, teaching materials and a flexible learning space. The school could, if we had the resources, spend $200,000 today on improvements that go to the core of a quality education.

A note will go home this week with every student with some additional material and methods for contribution. The voluntary contribution is the single biggest contributor by the P&C for school funding and we urge you to contribute generously. It is by far and away the easiest way to support your children, there is nothing to organise except the payment itself.

Every student at school looks forward to our support for their educational future.

... SRC ‘HELP NEPAL’ MUFTI DAY...|... Ms Bosler on behalf of the SRC

The SRC “Help Nepal Mufti Day” took place in Week 10 last term on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2015. The aim of this special Mufti Day was to raise money to help the people of Nepal who suffered a series of devastating earthquakes recently. The school was a sea of ‘red, white and blue’ as the students embraced the theme of the day - the colours of the Nepalese flag.

A very big “Thank You” to the Elanora Heights School Community for so generously supporting this Student Representative Council (SRC) initiative. We raised an amazing $793.10 and this money has been sent to the Red Cross. The SRC members from each class K-6 did a wonderful job having the money ready for collection on the day.

Of course we all enjoyed our special red, white and blue themed “Fruito/Vego” too!

NEPAL MUFTI DAY.... | ....Anneliese C (6P)On Tuesday, 23rd of June Elanora Heights had their Nepal Mufti DayEveryone was asked to come in something red white or blue as these are the colours of the Nepalese flag.

I think everyone one was amazed by how colourful everyone looked, well I know I was! We were surprised by how much all the students donated it was fantastic we even had some very generous stu-dents who brought in 5-10 dollars! We raised an amazing $793.10! All the money we raised will go to a great cause. Our school will donate this money to the poor people in Nepal who have had to face terrifying earthquakes. We hope this will help Nepal rebuild their schools, houses and a lot more.

All the classes were asked to learn something about Nepal but I would have to say my favourite fact was Ms Bosler’s. Ms Bosler told us that Mount Everest has moved slightly since Nepal’s terrible earthquakes.

Special thanks to the SRC who made this happen.’

BAND INTENSIVE WORKSHOP DAY #2Many thanks to everyone involved in our workshop day yesterday. It was a huge success and wouldn’t be possible to run without the help of parents and carers.

The children were all exceptionally well behaved and worked hard throughout the course of the day. We cannot express enough, the importance of attending a day like yesterday. It really accelerates the stu-dents playing abilities and gives our conductors an opportunity to delve into new music with their bands, in a much more intense way. A big thank you also to Mr.Gillespie, the EHPS teaching and office staff for their ongoing support and for making rooms available for us to use. Thank You THANK YOU very much to Di Vassallo for taking on the Training Band Manager’s role. If your child is in Training Band, Di will now be your point of contact with anything concerning band.
