The 2015-2016 Annual Report

Our Team, Our Family

Building Family

Above all else, SquashWise creates a second family for aspiring youth in Baltimore. We spend many years together, from middle school through early adulthood. Our team members experience so much together, bonding through the excitement of learning a new sport, traveling to competitive matches, and working together to realize personal goals. Not only do students make a long-term commitment, but so do staff and board members. Our average staff retention is nearly seven years, and more than 50% of our board members have served for more than five years. There is no doubt that strong relationships are formed here—relationships that have the power to open incredible doors for young people.

This year, we celebrate our second graduating class, 100% of whom graduated on time from high school, in a city where fewer than 65% of students earn a high school diploma. 90% of our graduates have matriculated to college, in comparison to 41.5% in Baltimore City Schools at large. All of our graduates remain a part of the SquashWise family throughout college and early careers. We continue to provide academic advising, financial aid, career exploration, and social support.

SquashWise students reached great heights again this year. As you’ll see in our report, students outperformed their peers academically, and they impressed us on the squash courts. Three students had inspirational summer experiences at Taft School, Miss Porter’s School, and Lawrenceville School, thanks to summer academic scholarships from NUSEA (the National Urban Squash & Education Association). Phillip Freeland won the U-19 division at the Midwestern Urban Squash Championships at Kenyon College, and other students competed at a high level in national squash squads held at Stanford, UVA, and Deerfield.

Students showed their dedication to the broader community, as well. Eleventh grader, Kamarra Richberg, learned about civic leadership on NUSEA’s Citizenship Tour, where she met with members of Congress, and even Supreme Court Justice, Elana Kagan. Locally in Baltimore, we bonded with police officers at Outward Bound’s Police Youth Challenge, and we supported our community by harvesting vegetables for the Maryland Food Bank at the McDonogh Roots Garden and volunteering for the homeless at Paul’s Place.

We are thrilled that you are a part of the extended SquashWise family we have built over the last nine years. Without your support, we would be unable to provide such enriching opportunities to our students and we would not have such compelling success stories to share. We are sincerely grateful for your generosity and hope you will continue to support our students in the future!

“The best part for me, as a parent, is when they get to travel to other states and meet other kids that may be just like them. I don’t know how much I can thank SquashWise for understanding, supporting my family—it’s like having another set of parents to help you with your children.”

Eryn Rich McDaniel College, class of 2019

“SquashWise has continued to be a support system for me. Even though I am in college they still help me with assignments, provide me with materials for school, and provide me with any assistance that I may need.” Eryn graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 2015, and is now a Sophomore at McDaniel College, studying Exercise Science and Spanish. Impressively, Eryn earned nearly a full scholarship to McDaniel, where she maintains a 3.05 GPA.

Ariona Mayo Naval Academy Preparatory School

Ariona graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 2016 and was accepted to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS). Upon successful completion of the NAPS program next year, she will enroll at the U.S. Naval Academy, where she plans to play squash and study engineering. Ariona explains,“Engineering has always inspired me because of the way ideas can come to life after experimenting through proposals and collaboration.”

SquashWise students are thriving in college! Students attend McDaniel College, University of Baltimore, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Naval Academy Preparatory School, Community College of Baltimore County, and Bowie State University.

Keon and Deon Rosado Ninth graders, Keon and Deon Rosado, attend Cristo Rey Jesuit School. They are twins with vastly different interests: Keon is drawn to engineering, technology, and automotive design, whereas Deon loves equestrianism, architecture, and the arts.

Despite their different interests, they find common ground in their commitment to SquashWise. Over the summer, Keon received a scholarship from The National Urban Squash + Education Association (NUSEA) to spend five weeks at the Taft School in Connecticut and take classes such as Contemporary Environmental Issues, Introduction to Psychology, and Biology. Deon spent his summer at SquashWise’s camp, where he visited the Naval Academy, volunteered at Paul’s Place, and exercised in boxing classes and on the squash courts.

Keon and Deon Rosado, 9th Grade Brett Poles, 7th Grade

Brett Poles This summer, Brett Poles, an outstanding SquashWise 7th grader, received a scholarship through the National Urban Squash + Education Association (NUSEA) for a summer enrichment program at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. During this intensive three week program, Brett studied everything from Shakespeare to Life Sciences. While both Brett and his mom were nervous about his living away from home for the first time, they are so glad he attended. Brett made new friends from places as far away as Tokyo and developed a love for his new favorite subject, Robotics. Brett’s mom was impressed by his resilience, his maturity, and his independence. “This has been a wonderful experience for the both of us,” she said. “The Lawrenceville staff spoke very highly of Brett and offered him the opportunity to apply for high school there and to continue to play squash. I thank SquashWise for allowing Brett to have this opportunity. We will be forever grateful for the experience.”

SquashWise works closely with students, parents, and the KIPP through College office to ensure that students matriculate to their best-fit high schools.

71% of our 9th grade students matriculated to a high school with entry requirements, including Baltimore City College, Western, Cristo Rey, Mount St. Joseph’s, Mercy, and more.

Middle School Corner

SquashWise students travel all over the country to compete in squash tournaments, visit colleges, attend summer camps, and learn about the world beyond Baltimore City. Traveling together allows us to grow closer as a team and family, and it helps students develop confidence to live away from home for college.

Student Profile:

Malia

Student Profile: Kamarra

Kamarra Richberg Kamarra is a highly motivated 11th grader at Western High School. One highlight of her SquashWise career was NUSEA’s Citizenship Tour, an 8-day travel experience where she and 21 other NUSEA students explored what it means to be an engaged citizen as they met with politicians, activists, and members of the media in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.. Kamarra shared her favorite moment of the trip, saying, “Meeting four Senators and a Supreme Court Justice was a life-changing experience. They showed me the many opportunities available in our government.”

Malia Carter Malia is one of SquashWise’s most talented players, currently ranked 18th for NUSEA girls. She is extremely athletic, very coachable, and absolutely loves to play squash. Over the past year Malia trained at Deerfield, University of Virginia, and Stanford. She was the only SquashWise student selected by NUSEA for all three opportunities. Only the top athletes from urban squash programs are considered for this elite training.
