THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST JUNE 24, 2018

“There is an appointed time for everything. . . ” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Peace to all,

My dear brothers and sisters, it is so wonderful to be back with you all after my short vacation to India. As the Scripture tells us, there is a time for everything. Yes, it was a time for me to be with my Norbertine community in Kerala, India, a time to be with my family, relatives, friends, and with my beloved people whom I pastored for many years.

It was a time to share, listen, learn more, and of course, a time to be with those who are underprivileged and marginalized in the society. Indeed it was a wonderful time for me and for those who had some time with me, supporting and encouraging one another.

It was a time of relaxing from all sorts of official activities, but at the same time, it was a time of more mission and responsibilities. I really enjoyed every bit of my time in India.

Though we were away from each other physically, we were always united in prayer and Spirit. I carried this entire parish community and the diocese to the Lord in prayer, in the Holy Mass daily. I know you also did likewise. This is the real communio that the Lord is asking of us. It is more meaningfully said in the words of the Scripture, “I give thanks to God always as, remembering you in my prayers. . . .” (Philemon 4)

I wish to convey prayerful greetings from my beloved parents, my brother and family, and my sisters and family. My parents are aging and have physical ailments and struggles in life. My brother continues to give thanks to God for the healing he experiences daily and for your sincere prayers and supports. My oldest sister lost her house and property in a recent flood, on the day prior to my return journey. I couldn’t be with them in their troubled time. Please pray for them as they need our prayers and support. They are going through a hard time! God has his plan for them I believe strongly! For the Scripture assures us that, “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

My family is ever grateful to each of you for the kindness, love, care, and hospitality extended to me here. Be sure that you are all remembered in their humble prayers daily.

My Norbertine community in Kerala, India, also conveys their love and greetings to you all. The community is growing. We have a good number of new vocations to our community, to the Norbertine way of life. My community always needs your prayers and support. The community is ever grateful to the OLOL parish family for all your support and prayers. They remember our parish in their daily Mass and prayers as well.

Words of gratitude

I want to sincerely thank Fr. Jim Baraniak and Fr. Brad for responsibly discharging their pastoral assistance to the parish in my absence. I also want to thank Deacon Mike for his pastoral assistance during my absence and for writing the pastoral page in the bulletins. Thanks to all of the office staff members for their dedicated service and to all who helped make the picnic a successful event for the parish.

Some of our parish members passed away during my absence. I am sorry that I was not here. My prayers are for them, and my continued prayers for their grieving family members. I share the pain of the loss of your beloved. May the comforting presence of our Lord and His Blessed Mother be with you now and always, in the sure and certain hope of meeting them again in heaven.

God bless everyone. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!

Meet the Sacristans ‒ Dave & Gail DeRuyter Gail DeRuyter has been a member of the St. Boniface/St. Joseph/Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family since she was baptized by Abbot Pennings. Her husband, Dave, joined the parish when they got married. Dave and Gail’s three children, Robb DeRuyter, Krissy Diederich, and Hollie Pederson and their families are also members.

Dave is a carpet installer and Gail is retired from PMI. In their free time, Dave works in their garden and watches sports. He and Gail also spend a lot of time doing activities with their grandchildren.

The De Ruyters were asked to become sacristans about ten years ago and decided it sounded like something they would enjoy. Dave also serves as an usher, and Gail is a Eucharistic minister. Over the years, they have gotten to know many of our parishioners and really like how friendly everyone is.

Congratulations! Congratulations to the Notre Dame Girls soccer team on winning its first-ever State Championship! (Photo credit: NDA Website)

Gospel Meditation - Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

June 24, 2018 — The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be?

Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born.

On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices — every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.
