Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

There is no liturgy at all on Holy Saturday. We spend this day in “the in-between place” - between the re-membering the death of our Lord and celebrating his Resurrection. The Easter Vigil Liturgy, which is cele-brated after sunset, is a full celebration of our Lord's resurrection. The Liturgy of the Word has a series of eleven readings to choose from. The idea is that we remain in vigil this night, reviewing the story of our sal-vation - from the story of Creation, to the great story of the Exodus from slavery in Egypt, through a number of the prophets, culminating in Paul's Letter to the Ro-mans - “Are you not aware that we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death?” The readings begin in the dark, and are then read by the light of the Easter Candle. Then the lights come on, bells are rung as we sing the Gloria. The gospel story of the Resurrection is then proclaimed in the full light, with Easter joy. During the day on Easter Sunday, we read from the Acts of the Apostles to hear Peter's preaching about the Resurrection. The Letter to the Colossians reminds us “You have died and your lives are hidden with Christ in God.” The gospel is from John's Gospel and give us the first story of that Easter morning - Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb and runs to Peter and the “disciple Jesus loved” to tell them. They run to the tomb and discover for themselves that it is empty.

Divine Mercy Sunday

The Sunday after Easter, April 3rd is Divine Mercy Sunday as decreed by St. John Paul II. We will have exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at the Mercy Hour of 3:00 pm. This Feast of Divine Mercy, as recorded in the diary of Saint Faustina, receives from Jesus himself the greatest promises of Grace related to the Devotion of Divine Mercy. Specifically, Jesus states that the soul that goes to Sacramental Confession within eight days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday and receives Holy Communion on that Sunday, shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and pardon from all temporal punishment due to sin. Additionally, Holy Mother Church grants a plenary indulgence, observing the usual rules with the recitation of some simple prayers. “This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. Every soul believing and trusting in My mercy will obtain it.” (Jesus' words, Diary 420)

Pope Francis Easter Message 2016

“Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe…” (Mk 16:5). The women were the first to see this great sign, the empty tomb; and they were the first to enter…

“Entering the tomb”. It is good for us, this Easter , to reflect on the experience of the women, which also speaks to us. For that is why we are here: to enter, to enter into the Mystery which God has accomplished with his vigil of love.

We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. It is not something intellectual, something we only know or read about… It is more, much more!

“To enter into the mystery” means the ability to wonder, to contemplate; the ability to listen to the silence and to hear the tiny whisper amid great silence by which God speaks to us (cf 1 Kings 19:12).

To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not flee from what we fail to understand, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our ques-tions…

To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity and our very existence.

To enter into the mystery, we need humility, the lowliness to abase ourselves, to come down from the pedestal of our “I” which is so proud, of our presumption; the humility not to take ourselves so seriously, recognizing who we really are: creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners in need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery we need the lowli-ness that is powerlessness, the renunciation of our idols… in a word, we need to adore. Without adoration, we cannot enter into the mystery.

The women who were Jesus’ disciples teach us all of this. They kept watch, together with Mary. And she, the Virgin Mother, helped them not to lose faith and hope. As a result, they did not remain prisoners of fear and sadness, but at the first light of dawn they went out carrying their ointments, their hearts anointed with love. They went forth and found the tomb open. And they went in. They had kept watch, they went forth and they entered into the Mystery. May we learn from them to keep watch with God and with Mary our Mother, so that we too may enter into the Mystery which leads from death to life.

From the Pastor’s Desk… EASTER MESSAGE

“You are looking for Jesus the crucified, but He is not here. He has been raised, exactly as He promised.” (MT28:5-6)

During this time of Paschal Joy, Orthodox Christians and Byzantine Catholics greet each other with this refrain in their respective languages “Christ is risen” and the response is “He is truly risen”. Unfortunately, in the Latin Church we simply say “Happy Easter”. Previously in centuries gone by a Catholic of the Latin Rite would say: “Resurrexit sicut dixit”: “He has risen as He said, Alleluia”. All these expressions of Paschal joy are based on the fact of the Historical Corporeal Resurrection of the Lord. The same body which experienced the ignominy of criminal crucifixion overcame death that first Easter Sunday. As St. Paul writes: “If Christ is not raised your faith is worthless.” (1Cor.15:17) The veracity of the Christian Faith rests upon the foundation of the corporeal resurrection. It is the proof that Christ is Our God, Our Lord and Our Savior.

Because of the Resurrection, you and I have one of two choices; to ignore it as did the chief priests and scribes when informed by the soldiers who guarded the tomb that He has been raised up or we can live as a changed people. Let us imitate the faith of the holy women who came to the tomb that first Easter Sunday. In his Easter homily of centuries ago Pope Gregory the Great wrote: “You have heard dearly beloved brethren how the holy women who had followed the Lord came to the tomb bringing sweet spices; the one they had loved in life, in death also they would serve with all care and tenderness. Now therefore, if we who believe in Him who was dead, come and seek the Lord bearing with us the perfume of virtues, together with the repute of good works, we do indeed come to his sepulcher bringing sweet spices.” In other words we profess our faith in the Resurrection of Christ by living as a resurrected people. A trans-formed and different people because all our hope is in the Risen Christ.

Focus on Faith Formation

Thank you to all of our families who turned in contributions for our Lenten service project. We were able to help the Circle of Compassion provide meals for needy families at Easter. Please note that our traditional weekly classes will meet Easter week. Spring break for the Mountainside schools are the week of April 10th so we will not have class that week. Our next Confirmation session will be Sunday, April 3rd beginning with the 11:30 am Mass. Our next Family Faith session will be Sunday, April 3rd and we will meet at the 5:00 pm Mass. Our speaker will be Fr. John Gordon who will be discussing the Year of Mercy. All in the parish are welcome to attend.

Children's Easter Prayer Dear God, Thank you for giving us such good gifts. For our families who love us. For delicious food and tasty drink. For so many different beautiful animals. For parks with tall trees and soft grass. For birds that fly among the clouds. For seas and streams that are fun to paddle in. And thank you for your son Jesus. We like to read about him in the bible. He taught his disciples about you. He healed people who were sick. He walked on water, And even died and came back to life. Help us to remember all the things he did And celebrate him on this special day. Amen

Celebrate Earth Day 2016 Holy Trinity School

Annual Earth Day-We Care! Poster Contest April 22nd

Help educate our community about the importance of caring for our Earth by designing a poster.

Judging and display of the artwork will take place in the Holy Trinity School Westfield Campus on Friday April 22nd from 2:30 to 4 pm. (336 1st St, Westfield). Ribbons and certificates will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. The most creative in each category will also get an Earth Day t-shirt and a starter planting kit and have their artwork displayed in the Trailside Center at their Earth Day Celebration on April 24th. The contest is open to all Westfield and Mountainside children. Visit www.facebook.com/htisnj for full contest rules and deadlines. The third graders enjoyed a field trip to the Mayo Theatre in Morristown to see the play “Charlotte’s Web”. They will be comparing and contrasting the book, the play and the movie. They also learned about our country’s capital and are currently engaged and enthusiastic about creating their very own Washington D.C. brochure. The room was filled with excitement when they began long division using the “Does (divide) McDonald’s (multiply) Serve (subtract) Cheese (check) Burgers (bring down and start over)” method. What an exciting week! Mrs. Green’s sixth grade religion class is studying Holy Week, culminating in making their own paschal candles. The families and staff of Holy Trinity School wish all of our parishioners a blessed and peaceful Easter season. Looking for a strong faith based Early Childhood Program?
