A Letter from the Pastor’s Desk… Dear Friends: Each week, in our parish bulletin and aloud at the Prayer of the Faithful, we remember those who are ill in body, mind or spirit. We pray for their recovery and for those who are their caretakers.

One name which regularly appeared in our prayers was Stephen Hernandez. Stephen, a bright and wonderfully talented young man, was grappling with a disease afflicting so many young people on Long Island and around the country, the crisis of drug addiction.

Happily, through the Grace of God, Stephen found the wisdom to give his life to recovery at Hope House of Long Island, an outstanding program created by Montfort Father Frank Pizzerelli. Stephen is doing well now, still on the path of recov-ery but in much better shape to each day make better choices because of his time at Hope House Ministry. In a recent publication for Hope House, Stephen Hernandez shared some of his journey to wholeness. It is an article of great hon-esty and gratitude. I thought it would be good to share it with you, parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, who have so faithfully kept Stephen in your prayers. His recovery gives each of us hope. Please read it and be grateful, as I am, for Hope House, for Father Frank Pizzerelli, for Stephen's loving and supportive family, and for the Grace of God which makes even the seemingly impossible possible.

With gratitude for your kindness to all, I am Sincerely in the Lord of Life, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Outreach

“We Care” Blankets

As our wonderful group of “Care Blanket” volun-teers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings

from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is noth-ing less than a beautiful thing!

Since our group began in November 2009, the com-pleted blanket count as of March 13 stands at 3,550. I’m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care.

Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260.

Ministry of Consolation

The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love, and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.

Created to provide warmth, caring, and personal atten-tion to assist families in preparation for the funeral Mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector, or EM, please give some though as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.

If you are considering volunteering for Ministry of Con-solation and have questions about doing so or questions about what each position entails, please call the Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260. I would be happy to speak to anyone considering joining this group of wonderful vol-unteers that already belong to this Ministry.

"Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to Me."

Our Lady of the Island Council 6911 Columbiettes

In 1939, Monsignor J. Francis McIntyre, at that time Chaplain of the New York Chapter Knights of Columbus, and who later because Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, California, seeing great numbers of women coming out of a Communist rally at Madison Square Gar-den, conceived the idea of a ladies organization to work with the Knights of Columbus. The New York Chapter Knights of Columbus formulated a plan for such an organization. Their plan called for the establishment of Auxiliaries in each Council and to coordinate the efforts of all under the direction of one parent group. On March 2, 1939 the first Columbiettes were instituted in New York City. Since that memorable day, many new auxiliaries were formed and eventually State Councils and a Supreme Council were established. New members are initiated in these subordinate Auxiliaries and it is only through the integrity, strength and scope of these Auxiliary activities that the Columbiettes have become a recognized group of women working with the Knights of Columbus, promoting the ideals of Columbianism. All women 17 years of age and over are invited to join and explore the benefits of become a Member of

the Our Lady of the Island Council 6911 Columbiettes. Our purpose is to rely upon the intercession of

Mary, our Mother and Model, for guidance in guarding the common good, and to work through her, on

loving and aiding all members of the human family and to aid the Knights of Columbus in the promo-

tion of their programs, promoting the ideals of Columbianism.

As for sociability and making new friends our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at

7:30 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall on East Gate Road, Massapequa Park. If there are any ques-

tions you would like to ask concerning our organization please don’t hesitate to contact us, we will be

happy to answer them. You do not need to be married to a Knight or live in the Massapequa area to

participate.

On Sunday March 24th we will hold a Membership Drive, representative of the Knights of Columbus

and the Columbiettes will be present at the back of the church to answer any questions. For further in-

formation you may also call or e-mail: 516-798-2492 or [email protected] for the Columbiettes and
