38th Annual Meet in the Street is May 5 » Meet in the Street will take place Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. in downtown Wake Forest. Presented by the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, Meet in the Street offers food, fun and entertainment, including live mu-sic and children’s activities. Admission is free. Park & Ride. A free shuttle service will be pro-vided again this year in conjunction with Sam’s Club and Kerr Family YMCA. Hop on a YMCA bus at the Wake Forest Sam’s Club, 11460 Royall Cotton Road, for the short trip into downtown. Shuttles will run from 9:30 a.m–5 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION Plan Survey – Your input is requested by May 26

The comprehensive transportation plan will address all modes of transportation, including driving, walking, biking and transit.

The Town of Wake Forest is in the process of developing a “Comprehensive Transportation

Plan” to address all modes of trans-portation, including driving, walking, biking and transit. As part of that ef-fort, the Town is conducting an online

survey to gather input from area residents to help direct transporta-tion planning efforts. The survey is available online at wakeforestnc.gov

(search “transportation survey”) from now through Saturday, May 26, and takes approximately five minutes to complete. The survey is an important element in the Town’s transportation planning efforts. Officials plan to incorporate survey responses to address transpor-tation challenges throughout Wake Forest.

Explore nature exhibits at National Trails Day The Town of Wake Forest will cel-ebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2, at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Environmental education stations will be set up throughout the park. Examine reptiles and amphibians and learn about their tracks and signs at an exhibit from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Learn how to identify song birds. Get on a LimeBike and explore the park trails. Also, learn about locally-growing, edible wild plants. Create a fishing line container. See camping exhibits, reptiles and more. Kids who pick up a passport at the Greenways Advisory Board booth and have it stamped at 10 stations will be eligible for a prize (while supplies last).

Cruise into town for the Wake Forest Charity Car Show

Wake Forest Downtown, Inc. will host the Wake Forest Charity Car Show on Saturday, June 16, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will take place along South White Street in historic downtown Wake Forest. This year’s charity car show benefits several local charitable organizations.

Sponsored by Auction Direct USA, the exhibit will showcase vehicles of all makes and models, including muscle cars, sports cars, pony cars, classic and antique autos, street rods and trucks. The car show will also feature a ‘Take-Apart-T’ Model T as-sembly demonstration, the Wake Forest Fire

Department and a drunk driving simulator. Admission to the car show is free. Anyone wishing to enter a vehicle in the car show may register on the day of the event between 8 and 11 a.m. at the intersection of South White Street and Elm Avenue. The registration fee is $20.

The annual Historic Wake Forest Cemetery Walking Tour returns on Saturday, May 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The self-guided tour provides an excellent opportunity to explore the historic Wake Forest Cemetery at 400 N. White St. while docents are on hand to share stories about specific gravesites. Sponsored by the Wake Forest Cemetery Advisory Board and the Town of Wake Forest, the annual Cemetery Walking Tour offers unique insight into the lives of Wake Forest residents from generations past. Representatives of the Wake Forest Junior ROTC, under the direction of Colonel Dimitri

Belmont, will appear as color guard in the opening ceremony. The JROTC will also provide parking and other assistance.

PRCR Department set to offer “May Month of Fitness” The PRCR Department is partnering with Camp Gladiator, Zumba Fitness and Z-Fitness with Jacque, Inc. to offer a free fitness series in May. Free and open to residents of all ages, “May Month of Fitness” will consist of Camp Gladiator on Mondays and Zumba on Thursdays. Each will be offered on their respective nights from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. No registration is required.

Camp Gladiator Camp Gladiator is an adult fitness boot camp that promises a motivating and challenging environment where men and women of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves. Participants should expect a total body workout. A typical session could include interval train-ing, sprint and agility drills, stations, plyometrics, body weight strength drills, cardio mix, and more. Participants are encouraged to bring a mat and water.

Zumba On Thursdays, instructor Jacque Allen will lead all ages of attendees in Zumba – a Latin-inspired, easy to follow calorie-burning dance-fitness party. Participants are encouraged to bring water.

Women’s Self Defense Class offered at park A free self-defense class will be offered Tuesday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Sponsored by the PRCR Department, instructors from Krav Maga Raleigh will teach women techniques to avoid danger and how to defend themselves if neces-sary. Krav Maga is a no-nonsense system that focuses on the most practical and instinctive methods to get you out of harm’s way. Stay informed about waste collection with the “Waste Wizard” An interactive tool on the Town of Wake Forest website and app makes it easy for residents to stay informed about garbage, recycling and yard waste collection programs. Available on the Town’s website at wakeforestnc.gov, the “Waste Wizard” allows users to sign up for waste collection reminders and download collection schedules. The Waste Wizard also allows users to type in key words related to disposable household materials and receive valuable disposal tips. From aluminum cans and phone books to popcorn bags and plastic beverage bottles, the search tool helps residents determine which items can be recycled and which ones should be thrown away. As an added bonus, the Waste Wizard is provided as a function on the Town of Wake Forest app.

WAKE FOREST POLICE DEPARTMENT

Police department attains CALEA accreditation The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) has received na-tional accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA). The accreditation verifies that the WFPD meets the commission’s industry best-practice standards and has attained public safety professional excellence. As part of the voluntary application process, WFPD had to com-ply with 189 standards, including development of a comprehensive, well-thought-out uniform set of written directives, a preparedness program in place to address natural or man-made critical incidents and accountability for authority, performance and responsibilities both within the agency and the community. The accreditation is good for four years, during which WFPD must submit annual reports to show continued compliance with the standards under which it was initially accredited. The purpose of CALEA’s accreditation is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by maintaining a body of stan-dards developed by practitioners in the field.

Making Your Steps Count It takes about 6,250 steps to walk or run a 5K race. For many, these steps count toward a daily goal of 10,000 steps. The annual Faster Than a Pastor 5K event, hosted by Woodland Baptist Church, has a goal to make your steps count for even more. All proceeds from this 5K go to support two organizations, Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry and ChurchNet Foundation, who reach out to of-fer a helping hand to those in our community. Tri-Area Ministry serves 750 families per month and helps pro-vide food for 34,000 people each year. ChurchNet Foundation provides financial assis-tance related to utility costs and prescription needs for over 300 peo-ple in the community each year. By participating in the 4th annual Faster Than a Pastor 5K on Saturday, September 8, your steps will help these organizations help others all throughout the year. More than $15,000 has been raised over the past three years.

This 5K event is for recreational runners/walkers as well as for competitive participants (timing chips are availa-ble) and will take place at Joyner Park in Wake Forest. A 1-mile “Fun Run” will also be available for children or adults who want to participate. The entry fee, which includes a t-shirt, is $25 before August 9 and $30 after this date. Magda Holloway named Public Works Director Town Manager Kip Padgett recently introduced Magda Holloway as Wake Forest’s new Public Works Director. She began work Monday, March 19, succeeding Mike Barton who retired after serv-ing as the Town’s Public Works Director since 2002. Holloway comes to Wake Forest from the City of Charlotte, where she had served as the city’s Operations Supervisor for the Southwest District since 2016. Prior to that, she worked as the Street Superintendent for the City of Sanford and the Public Works Director for the Town of Oak Island.

Wake Forest Power named 2018 “Tree Line USA” Wake Forest Power has been named a 2018 “Tree Line USA” util-ity by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The award acknowledges Wake Forest Power’s commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care. This marks the fourth year in a row Wake Forest Power has earned the honor. “Wake Forest Power’s efforts in meeting Tree Line USA require-ments, which include training our workers in quality tree-care prac-tices and helping our customers plant appropriate trees near utility lines, not only helps to enhance our urban forest, but also results in long-term operation savings,” said Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones. “The fact that we experienced no power outages during January’s winter storm is a testament to our tireless efforts regarding the care of our urban forest.”

May is Building Safety Month In recognition of the need for safe buildings where we live, work and play, the Town of Wake Forest Inspections Department proudly sponsors Building Safety Month. The department offers these top tips for a safe home: n Plug only one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, space heater or microwave) directly into a wall outlet at a time. Never use an extension cord with a heat-producing appliance. n Schedule an annual tune-up for your gas-fired appliances to ensure they are not releasing excessive amounts of carbon monox-ide. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home to alert you of unsafe levels of the gas. n Check smoke alarm batteries every six months to make sure they are working. n Give children all of your attention when they are in and around water. n If you have a small cooking fire on your stove, slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the burner.

The Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation is seeking community assistance to help cover expenses associated with bringing “The Wall That Heals” to Wake Forest. A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Wall That Heals (TWTH) is coming to the Wake Forest Historical Museum, 414 N. Main St., Thursday–Sunday, Oct. 18–21. Free and open to the public, the exhibit will be available 24-hours-a-day. Financial support from local businesses and individuals is needed to help cover the cost of bringing TWTH to Wake Forest. Sponsorship levels range from $100 to $7,500 and include an

Bicycle Safety Fair Wake Forest is helping raise awareness about the importance of bike safety by sponsoring a free Bicycle Safety Fair on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the Brooks Street parking lot of town hall. The safety fair is again being offered as part of the 38th Annual Meet in the Street. The event is designed to teach safe bicycle riding skills to children ages five to 14 and their parents. During the event, participants will be taught safe riding techniques through an obstacle course that re-creates real-life situations.

PRCR Department introduces Bench Donation Program

The PRCR Department is pleased to introduce a Bench Donation Program for Town-maintained parks and greenways. The initiative will allow the PRCR Department, through donor funding, to install benches in and along Town parks and greenways in areas that have been identified as appropriate and suitable. The program also offers a unique and meaningful way for area residents

to honor and remember friends and loved ones, promote their company, recognize a civic group, or commemorate a special event. The average cost of each bench is $1,200–$1,800 and includes in-stallation and a donor inscription. Donations may be tax-deductible.
