More on Shingles.To the editor of "Our Town:"Permit me through your columnsto express my opposition to theproposed ordinance whi ch wou ldgreatly restrict the use of shinglesfor roofing houses outside t he f ir ez on e in our borough.It has been my privilege to residein Narber th for 25 years , and within half a b lo ck of the railroad duri ng a ll these years; my buildingshave a ll b ee n roofed with shingles,and, so far, have had no t roub lewith fire on account of shingledroofs.Although the word Narberth (soI am informed) means "not beautiful," I contend that our town isa beau ti ful t own and much of theartistic beauty i s d er iv ed f rom t heuse of shingles for roofing. It doesnot s eem to m e worth while to sacrifice the pleasing and artistic appearance o f o ur h omes f or t he fewdollars we might sav e by having aslightly lower insurance rate-as Jsee i t, that would be about all thebenefit to be derived by passing such,an ordinance.With ou r always-efficient firecompany, which has g iv en amp leprotection in the past , and will continue to do so, there is no urgentreason on that account for compelling the use of all s or ts o f v ar ico lored composi t ion mater ia ls forroofing purposes.
