19 July 2019 saw a total of 400 parents and Kindergarten 2 students attending our

Open House 2019. The overwhelming response was encouraging and an affirmation

of the school’s efforts.

Besides an array of Outdoor Education, Sports and Games, Visual and Performing

Arts workshops and a library visit, the K2 students also underwent a canteen

experience where they get an opportunity to use play-money to buy snacks from the

mock-up canteen stalls.

Parents were invited to a session with me to gain more information about primary

school education and how to manage their children’s transition into Primary One.

They were also led on a school tour to interact with our students and to find out

more about the school’s curriculum and signature programmes.

It was heartwarming to see the parents and their children interacting with our Huaminites, Alumni, teachers and parent volunteers.

National Education (NE) Show 2019 The theme for this year's National Day Parade (NDP) 2019 is "Our Singapore". It marks the 54th Anniversary of our independence and allows us to tell Our Singapore story from the past to the present. “Our” emphasises the collective ownership of Singapore. We are living the dreams of our pioneers, and we are now the pioneers of our future.

Our Primary 5 students were privileged to be at the NE Show this year on Saturday, 20 July 2019, held at the Padang. Our students and teachers enjoyed themselves very much as they soaked in the colourful sights and lively sounds of the parade and performances at this year’s celebration. Huaminites celebrated the event's climax of fireworks with much enthusiasm and pride for Singapore. The NE Show had truly evoked a sense of patriotism and pride amongst our P5 students.

2019 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration

The Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration was held on Wednesday, 3 July 2019 with a concert during the assembly period and fun activities during recess. The concert started with the sound of the gong to signify the opening of the Hari Raya celebration. This was followed by a fashion parade made up of students from various ethnic groups who were dressed in the Malay traditional costumes. Students were also presented with information on the month of Ramadan, the significance of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the traditions during the celebration. The students were excited when our talented teachers and EAS staff put up a dance performance. The concert ended with a finale song, sung by our teachers with all the performers joining them on stage.

During recess, students participated enthusiastically at the various activities booth. The students were creative in making kuih using playdough with the various moulds. They also had a lot of fun weaving the ribbon to make a ‘ketupat’, one of the popular Malay traditional foods served during Hari Raya. There was also a display on ‘Hari Raya Celebrations around the World’. After reading the information, students could

get a prize if they answered the quiz questions on the iPads correctly. Students also had fun putting on the Malay traditional costumes to have their photographs taken with their friends. The students enjoyed the celebration as a school and they have developed a greater appreciation for Singapore’s multicultural society.

Father-Child Bonding Programme

The father-child relationship is a significant factor in the emotional and cognitive

development of a child. As part of the school’s continuing efforts to support the

FamilyMatters @School for Fathers programme, we organised a ‘Father-Child

Bonding through Giant Games’ on Saturday, 27 July 2019.

It was a fun-filled morning for the fathers and their children, playing three different

games – Poolball, Giant Jenga and Giant Pick-up Sticks. There was a high level of

energy and enthusiasm amongst all the participants.

2019 National Day Celebration Huamin Primary School will be celebrating Singapore’s 54th birthday on Thursday, 8 August 2019. “Our Singapore”, the 2019 National Day theme commemorates our Singapore Bicentennial and allows us to tell Our Singapore story from the past to the present. To make the celebration more meaningful for our students, there will be integration of different subjects to highlight the significance of National Day. Students will also be participating in recess booth activities on 6 and 7 August to get them to recollect our past, appreciate the present and look forward to our future. The programme on the actual day of the celebration will include the Observance Ceremony as well as fun and meaningful classroom activities, followed by a concert. Students are encouraged to wear red t-shirts with white shorts or school culottes/PE shorts on Thursday, 8 August 2019. They are also to wear the school socks and shoes. If they do not have a red t-shirt, they will wear their full school attire as per the normal school day. Please note that students will report to school as usual at 7.25a.m. and will be dismissed at 10.15a.m. Please make the necessary

arrangements for your child/ward on that day.

A Unique School Holiday Accomplishment

During the June 2019 school holidays, Tay Puay Chee of 4 Respect participated in an expedition mission together with her mother, Mdm Lily Cheong and 4 other adults. A very courageous Puay Chee trekked 104km entirely on foot across parts of the Gobi Desert in a physical and mental challenge quest. As the team-appointed leader of the expedition, Puay Chee, under the guidance of the expeditor organiser was the first to cross the finishing line after the gruelling 4-day trek. We are very proud of Puay Chee’s personal achievement. She has definitely demonstrated very strongly the Huaminite vision of Adventurous Learners. Puay Chee also did a sharing during the pre-assembly with all her fellow Huaminites. Her feat earned her much praise and admiration from her schoolmates as they were truly inspired and awed by her accomplishment.

11th MOE Olive Run 2019 As part of MOE staff well-being programme under OLive, the Ministry of Education Sports and Recreation Club (MESRC) organized the 11th MOE OLive Run 2019 at Gardens by the Bay, Bay East on Saturday, 13 July 2019. Staff of Huamin rallied together to form a team and we participated in the different events that day. Indeed, it was a good opportunity for us to demonstrate our school value of “Healthy Lifestyle” and together, we spurred one another on to complete the race.

The Huamin Team all set to go! We were most happy to be joined by DGE and Mrs Wong for a memorable group photo!

Smiles as we completed the events in good time!

Together, we had a wonderful time exercising on a bright and lovely Saturday morning!

1) Preliminary Examination for Primary 6

The written papers for our school Preliminary Examination for Primary 6 will be held from 19 to 23 August 2019. Please refer to the schedule at the end of this newsletter or Letter to Parents Letter No.:101/2018 on 22 May 2018. 2) PSLE Oral Examinations on Thursday, 15 August and Friday, 16 August

This year, the PSLE Oral Examinations will be held on Thursday, 15 August and Friday, 16 August 2019. P1 to P5 students are not required to report to school on these two days.

Health Tips for Parents

Fruity Facts How much fruit should you be eating in a day? The recommended daily consumption is two servings. As a general guideline one serving of fruit looks something like this:

1 small apple, orange, pear or mango (130g)

1 wedge of papaya, pineapple or watermelon (130g)

4 small seeds of durian or jackfruit (80g)

10 grapes or longans (50g)

1 medium banana

1 cup of dried fruit (40g)

Now that you know your fruity facts, go ahead and enjoy a healthy snack that’s not only delicious but also good for you.

Parenting Tips Promoting growth mindset in your child A person’s abilities, skills and intelligence are not set in stone. They can be developed and improved given hard work and dedication. Your child needs to believe that with effort, he can learn new skills and knowledge and gain competence. This will increase your child’s internal motivation as he realises that he has the choice and power to make improvements for himself. A child with a growth mindset will be more willing to try new experiences and be challenged and these are important traits in our current dynamic and uncertain environment. Here are what parents can do to promote a growth mindset:

i. Offer encouragement

Trying new experiences can be daunting for our young children especially when the risk of failure is high and they may perceive negative evaluation by others. Encouragement from significant adults especially parents can go a long way to mitigate your child’s reservations to try new things. When your child shows interest to pursue a new hobby or project or participate in a competition, refrain from belittling his ability and instead instil hope especially when he encounters challenges in his pursuits.

ii. Affirm effort

Frequently, children are praised for the end results that they achieve. However, there may be occasions when the amount of effort put in does not bring in the desired result and this may cause your child to be demotivated and give up. Therefore, do not wait for the end result. When you observe your child spending time practising to improve his craft, praise him for his efforts. Parent’s affirmation of the child when he does the right thing may increase the likelihood of him continuing to do the same thing as it is associated with a positive experience of being positively acknowledged by his parent.

iii. Be present

Always show interest in what your child is doing or interested in. Adopt a curious stance in finding out how your child is progressing. When necessary, offer help or suggestions so that your child knows that he is not alone and that he can turn to someone if he needs advice or guidance.

iv. Build resilience

As your child learns to develop new skills and abilities, he may encounter setback and failures. Help your child understand that failure is not the final product and that he can continue to get better. Emphasize that failure is part and parcel of life and when taken positively, it can lead to subsequent successes. Share stories of individuals who have encountered failures but who achieved success eventually. You may also share your own personal stories with your child on how you overcame your past or current challenges.
