Clergy Corner
By Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham
Summer seems devoid of holidays and activities in the Jewish calendar and Jewish world in general. There is one day the rab-
bis deemed of major importance during the summer months: Tisha B'Av, the 9th day of the month of Av. Tisha B'Av com-
memorates the day the First and Second Temples were destroyed. This was the day the spies sent to Canaan brought back the
discouraging report; it was also the day our forefathers were told they would not enter the Land of Israel (in parsha Shelach),
the expulsion from Spain in 1492 and the outbreak of World War I which was prelude to World War II and the savage destruc-
tion of six million Jews.
Tisha B' Av and Yom Kippur are the only 24 hour fast days. This year Tisha B' Av begins Saturday night, July 21, at sundown.
There is but one major difference compared with Yom Kippur -- we are allowed to work when not in services.
We lament our collective suffering by reading from the Book of Eicha with particular emphasis on the destruction of both Tem-
ples. Some have suggested that since Jerusalem is now integrated into the State of Israel, Tisha B'Av has lost its meaning. The
prevailing view is the “events cannot be undone,” and as Maimonides notes, “it is a constant stimulus for repentance and
good deeds.” If nothing else, it is a reminder we are all connected as Jews.
While we spend a full day in our state of mourning (we do not even exchange customary greetings), we then come together as
a people to comfort one another. The Shabbat immediately following is known as “Shabbat Nachamu” from the Haftarah
where Isaiah begins “Nachamu, Nachamu Ami,” “Comfort, Comfort My People.” Isaiah reminds us that even after the trage-
dies, we always come together to comfort each other and move forward. There are seven Shabbatot leading up to Rosh
Hashanah known as the Sabbaths of Consolation. We are “consoled” knowing that we will soon be renewed on the High Holy
Days.
It is not all doom and gloom. Five days after Tisha B' Av we have Tu B' Av, the 15th of Av. It is a minor holiday known as the
Day of Love. The Talmud (Tannit 30b) tells us it was the day all unmarried girls would dance the streets of Jerusalem dressed
in white (apparently looking for their mates). These days, it is a time to remember the importance of the loves in our lives, as
well. In Israel it is the beginning of the harvest season and a time for weddings, commitment ceremonies, the renewal of
vows and proposing. At Agudas we will have a Tu B'Av Shabbat service and Potluck Dinner Friday, July 27, at 6:15 PM as we
celebrate love and the togetherness of our community.
My prayer for all of us as we go through this summer together is that we remember the hard times in our lives, while we take
time to comfort each other, as well, and move our community to even greater heights!
B’Shalom
Rabbi Abraham
B’nai Mitzvah Marcella Rachel Perry will be called to the Torah as a Bat
Mitzvah on June 9, 2018. She is the daughter of Michele
and Derek Perry and the sister of Jacob and Leah.
Marcella is the granddaughter of Helene and Roger
Weizman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and also the grand-
daughter of Barbara and Mark Perry of Port St. Lucie,
Florida.
Marcella enjoys playing volleyball for her school and club.
She also plays golf, runs track, and plays tennis for her
middle school. She loves playing the piano and singing in
her spare time and has performed in various shows at the
Cameo Theatre and the Roxie Theatre. Her interest for
her mitzvah project, included volunteering at the Humane
Society with her brother and adopting one of the animals.
Allen Jordan, eldest grandson of Linda and Michael Moad and son of Wendy and Aaron Jordan received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Kinesiology on May 11, 2018 from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. Allen was a 2013 graduate of Brandeis High School then joined the Corps of Cadets when he entered Tarleton State. Allen will be receiving his commission in the United States Army as a 2nd LT later this year and will be reporting to Officer training in January of 2019.

Mission Statement
Congregation Agudas Achim is a sacred community committed to the egalitarian
traditions and ideals of Conservative Judaism. We are guided by the principles of
Torah (study), Avodah (meaningful worship), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness). We
strive to connect each generation with the values and principles of our Jewish past, the moral/
ethical demands of the present, and the energy to build for a Jewish tomorrow.
