About this bookI enjoy genealogy because it requires the sort of attention to detail that I

enjoy and it is well suited to computers, which are my lifes work. I lovegenealogy because of all the wonderful people I get to meet, those livingand those brought back to life when their stories are told.

Come join me and meet a lot of nice folks whose common bond hasresulted in my most favorite people of all.

DedicationTo Adam as you go off to college. So that you know who you are.

    ABOUT THIS BOOK

In genealogy there are two ways to work. First, you find some long ago ancestor in your line and trace alldescendants that can be found. Second, you can trace your direct ancestors. Since my grandfather camefrom Scotland the majority of my distant cousins were a third of the way around the world and so I didntfind the first method to be very interesting. That left me with finding all of my direct ancestors. While I wasat it, I also tried to find all of my wifes direct ancestors too, since obviously both of our ancestors areancestors of our children.

When tracing ancestors each generation doubles the number of families to be found. Once you have hadsome success, there are quite a number of families. To keep them all straight I collected the families intolineages. A lineage is a set of families with the same surname.

The following table illustrates our set of sixteen lineages.

Photos were very interesting to me and so this book has selections from a large collection of family photos Ihave received. Records are absolutely critical to establishing the data that makes up a genealogical report. Ihave collected around 400 different sources of information and those are referenced throughout.

Genealogy has a standard method of reporting ancestry information, sometimes called an Ahnentafel report,

but also called a Journal report. This volume contains a full Journal report. In genealogy it is very importantto document where information came from. The Journal Report is fully source noted and a completebibliography is provided at the end.

    WHERE ARE WE FROM?

It is common for an American to ask What are you? Of course this means what ethnicity are you?, ormore correctly, where are you from?

The answer to the question varies by lineage. However, in general the answer is very simple. We are mostly

British and most of the rest is German. A couple lines havent been followed back to a country of origin andone of our lines is Delaware Indian. Some of our ancestors were from areas that are today part of France andPoland, but at the time they were part of Germany and those ancestors were thoroughly German. British issaid in the full sense of the meaning of the word British. We have ancestors from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England. We also have ancestors from Canada at a time when Canada was still very much an active partof the British Empire.

    Our heritage by lineage:

Black British The Blacks were originally from Ireland. Matthew Blackcrossed over to Glasgow Scotland around 1860. His grandsonCharles, my grandfather, came from Scotland to Chicago,Illinois in the United States in 1923.

Cunningham British The Cunninghams lived in Wigtonshire, a peninsula on the west

coast of Scotland. They eventually moved to Glasgow.

Becker German The Beckers emigrated from Germany to Chicago around 1860.

Polkow German The Polkows emigrated from Germany to Chicago in 1866.

Hyde British The Hydes can be traced back to Quebec Canada in the 1860s.They emigrated to Canada from England. Charles Hyde came toDetroit Michigan in the United States in 1874.

Rinke German The Rinkes lived in what was then Prussia in Germany, but isnow part of Poland. Christoph Rinke came to Detroit, Michiganin the United States in 1861.

Butt British The Butts lived in Dorset in south central England; Joseph Buttwent to Ontario, Canada in 1841. Charles Butt came to Detroit,Michigan in the United States half a century later, in 1890.

Other families in this line include the Van Stones who were alsofrom England and then Canada, and the Walters who started inWales and eventually moved to England and the United States.

Parke British? The Parkes have been traced back to New York where WilliamParke was born in 1815. The name Parke is British in origin soit is very likely that they were originally British. The Parkesmoved from New York to Valparaiso, Indiana and eventually toChicago, Illinois.

Feaster German? The Feasters have been traced to New Jersey around the time ofthe Revolutionary War. A likely ancestor has been traced to

Germany. The Feasters moved the part of Virginia that laterbecame West Virginia and later to Lafayette Indiana.

Keplinger The Keplingers are traced to Virginia, specifically the part thatlater became West Virginia.

Cassman Indian Samuel Cassman was a full-blooded Delaware Indian. Theyeventually settled in Indiana.

Downing British The Downings were English and other families in their linewere among the original settlers of Maryland. They eventuallysettled in Ohio.

Reichard German? Abraham Reichard is traced back to Pennsylvania just before theRevolutionary War. Although the orign of the Reichards is

unknown, many of the other families from the Reichard lineageare from Germany. They all helped to settle North Carolina andthen later moved from North Carolina over a period of decadesto west central Indiana.

Cooper British The Coopers lived in England. Cooper ancestor Edward Dotywas the cabin boy on the Mayflower. The Coopers settled inMassachusetts with the Pilgrims in 1635, but found themdifficult and moved out to settle Long Island, New York. Theylater spent several generations in western Pennsylvania beforemoving to Ohio then Indiana.

Watkins British Daniel Watkins was originally from England but married inMaryland in 1768. Watkins ancestor William Kelsey helped

settle Connecticut in 1636. They moved to Kentucky and then toIndiana.

Webb Samuel Webb was born in New York in 1756. The Webbsmoved first to Kentucky and then to Indiana.

There are two common American stories here. Scotts lineages are all nineteenth century immigrants. Theycame from either England or Germany and ended up either in Detroit or Chicago. Both Charles Butt andHenry Hyde moved from Detroit to Chicago and by the twentieth century all of his lineages were in theChicago area.

Betsy is the daughter of founding fathers and one Native American. Her ancestors helped found Connecticut,Massachusetts, Long Island New York, and Maryland. They were early settlers of Pennsylvania. At firstthey moved south to Virginia and North Carolina. Later they moved westward to Kentucky and Ohio, eventually converging in West Central Indiana.

Betsy and Scott met in Ohio at their first job after college. Coincidentally, they met not far from the site ofthe farm of Betsys great-great-grandfather Thomas Watkins. They too ended up in Indiana.

    STORIES

Of course, everyone wants to know interesting stories about their family. The following stories provide a bitof history, some tragedy, and some family soap opera.

Our cousin the King of England

Everyone hopes to find someone famous in their family tree. As you might suspect from the title, this isindeed the case for our family. However, the first part of this story is about the power of the internet. AuntMadge (Hyde, my mothers sister) had given me a copy of a court case (see The Importance of BeingErnest below for more detail). There was a lot of genealogical information in the case and I entered it and

posted it on the Internet.Later a lady doing genealogical work checked for her grandfather. She didnt expect to find anything, buttried anyway just for the heck of it. She was stunned to find out that she got a match. It turns out that hergrandfather was one of the folks I posted genealogical data on from the court case. She sent me an e-mailand we started working together.

She sent me a number of wonderful pictures but the key thing she sent was a copy of the Van Stone scroll.Mary Van Stone was married to Charles Butt Sr. I didnt know much about her except her name, the day shedied and some medical history (discussed later in the The Family Curse). After receiving the Van Stonescroll I not only knew more about Mary, but now I had her family history going back five or six generations.

The further back you go in time, the easier it is to find more information. It gets more and more likely youwill run into work somebody else had already done and posted. I searched for more information on the VanStone spouses and hit paydirt with Elizabeth Walter, the wife of Samuel Van Stone III (those Van Stonesloved the name Samuel!). It seemed like the Walter family tree went halfway back to Adam. As I wasentering data for some of the earliest Walters, I noticed that a couple of them were born in Roch Castle,Wales. Well that sure seemed interesting! I looked it up Roch Castle on the internet (love that internet!) and

    found out the following:

    Roch Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Roch castle was founded in the 2nd half of the 13th century, although the lordship de Rupe (rock) can be traced back to about1200. An earlier fortress may have existed here, but the prominentD-shaped tower on this isolated rocky outcrop is thought to havebeen built by Adam de Rupe. The family had played an importantrole in the English settlement of Pembrokeshire and ownedconsiderable territory in the northern areas. Roch Castle wasdoubtless built as one of the outer defences of "Little England" or"Landsker" for it is near the unmarked border for which centurieshas separated the English and Welsh areas of Pembrokeshire.

The de Rupe, or Roche, family came to an end in 1420 and thecastle changed ownership a number of times until it came into thepossession of the Walter family, who owned it when the Civil Warbroke out in 1642. Although Walter saw out the war in the safetyof London, his castle was garrisoned by the Royalists, and it wasinvolved in much action in 1644 when it was taken byParliamentarians, recaptured by the Royalists, and then fell onceagain to Cromwell's forces. Walter did not return to Roch Castle, going instead to Hague, but his daughter Lucy stayed in Londonand became the mistress of Charles II. Their son was

acknowledged by Charles, who made him Duke of Monmouth - the

doomed leader of the rebellion against James II.

Indeed, that was our Walter family in our Roch Castle. So we have some minor Welsh nobility in the

bloodline. Neat. But whoa! What was that little bit at the end there? Our direct ancestors are Richard Walter, Lucys brother, and William Walter, Richard and Lucys father, andowner of Roch Castle. During the English Civil war mentioned in the article King Charles I was beheadedand Oliver Cromwell ran England. The process was hard on the Walter family. Their castle was foughtover and they ended up on the losing side of the Civil War. They went into exile. Charles, the son of thebeheaded King was out of a job. With lots of time on his hands he became a 17th century playboy. He hadnumerous mistresses, including our Aunt Lucy. She bore him a son and a daughter.

Eventually Cromwell died and the people of England decided that they really preferred aKing and invited Charles to take the throne, which he gladly did, becoming Charles II. AsKing, he remembered Lucy and her children fondly. He recognized her son James as hisson and married him off into the noble Scott family, whose name he took. He becameJames Scott, Duke of Monmouth.

Our cousin the Duke went off to serve in the military and did extremely well, becoming a15th century celebrity. He was young, handsome, daring, and successful.

Charles II was popular, but everyones time must end and so did Charles.Charles brother James II ascended to the throne. However, James II wasquite unpopular. He was obnoxious, which wasnt unusual in a King. Hismain offense was that he was a Catholic which in Anglican England duringProtestant times was not well accepted at all.

Since our cousin was young, popular, a successful soldier, and a recognizedif illegitimate son of Charles, he was a natural to consider as a contenderfor replacing the hated James on the throne.

Cousin James listened to the plotters and agreed. He came ashore and hadhimself crowned King of England.

Our cousin the King of England! Naturally, in order for anew King to sit on the throne the current King needed to bequite dead. James quite naturally did not think highly ofthis option and rode out to defend his throne and his life.Unfortunately, the plotters were much better at plottingthan at raising an Army. James skill at being a soldierwasnt enough to overcome his disadvantage in numbersand his Army was defeated by his uncle King James II.

Cousin James was hauled off to the Tower of Londonwhere he was particularly clumsily beheaded for histreason. It is said it took eight blows to sever his head.

Having been on first the wrong side of the revolution andthen on the wrong side of the rebellion, the Waltersfortunes were ruined. Ancestor Richard moved to a quietpart of England. Several generations later his descendantElizabeth married into the Van Stone family. The VanStones eventually ended up in Canada and Mary Van Stonemarried into the Butt family, becoming the grandmother of

    Olive Butt.

Around 1892, about three centuries after the Delaware Indians first laid eyes on the Calverts in Maryland thetwo sides met again as Calvert descendant Ada Downing married Harry Cassman, a descendant of that sameDelaware tribe.

Thanksgiving is truly a family tradition

Yes we do have an ancestor who came over on the Mayflower. Our Mayflower ancestor is Edward Doty, the

cabin boy. Plymouth Colony, Its History & People says this about Edward:

Edward Doty, arriving on the Mayflower as a servant to StephenHopkins, became a prosperous landowner and employer of servantshimself, but displayed a temper and an argumentative nature whichfrequently brought him into court as both a complainant and adefendant.

Edward married Faythe Clark daughter of Triston Clarke. Interestingly,Edwards daughter Desire married Alexander Standish, son of MilesStandish. The Dotys eventually married into the Cooper family. EffieCooper is their descendant.

    Arriving in Massachusetts in late

November, the Pilgrims sought asuitable landing place. On December11, just before disembarking atPlymouth Rock, they signed the"Mayflower Compact" - America'sfirst document of civil government andthe first to introduce self-government.

After a prayer service, the Pilgrims began building hasty shelters. However, unprepared for the starvation and sickness of a harsh NewEngland winter, nearly half died before spring. Yet, persevering in prayer, and assisted by helpful Indians, they reaped a bountiful harvest thefollowing summer.

The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast, starting onDecember 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate with their Indianfriends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving in America(thanksgiving services were held in Virginia as early as 1607), it wasAmerica's first Thanksgiving Festival.

Of course since Edward and the Clarkes were there, they must haveattended that first Thanksgiving Festival almost 400 years ago. So when we sit down to Thanksgiving dinnerwe should remember our many time great-grandparents who started the tradition.

    The First Thanksgiving

    More Founding Fathers

We have other founding fathers in addition to Lord Baltimore and Edward Doty. William Kelsey was one ofthe original "Braintree Company" followers of the Reverend Thomas Hooker, who came to America and theywere the first settlers of "New Towne" (now Cambridge) Massachusetts in 1632. They later went on tofound Hartford, Connecticut. John Cooper came to Massachusetts not long after the Pilgrims and soonmoved out, becoming one of the founders of Southampton, Long Island. Numerous ancestors that marriedinto the Reichard family were among the earliest settlers of North Carolina.

Later descendants of these founding fathers moved west and were amongst the earliest settlers of Ohio,Kentucky and Indiana.

    Joseph the Fruitful

Joseph Butt is Olive Butt Hydes great-grandfather. He lived in England and had ten children with his firstwife Sarah Arnold. Now in the 1800s having ten children was hardly an exception. Everyone was havingten, twelve or even sixteen children. It is said that Sarah was the daughter of a gentleman and her sister wasbetter off than she and Joseph. Sarah grew tired of having her nose rubbed in it, and so the family packed up

and moved to Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately for the pregnant Sarah the move proved too much for her andshe and her baby died in the new land.

The still young Joseph (he was 36) was left with ten children to raise. While Sarah and he may not have beenas well off as her sister he was still able to afford a housekeeper. The housekeeper had a sixteen year olddaughter named Ann. The housekeeper died about the same time as Sarah, leaving Ann homeless. Josephnot only took the poor Ann in, he married her. Sixteen year old Ann was now mother to ten children, including three boys who were older than she was!

Joseph didnt lose any of his potency and continued to have children with Ann. Over the years, he had tenchildren with her. Thats ten children with Sarah, the child that Sarah died with, and ten more children withAnn for a total of twenty-one children with his two wives. Joseph lived to be 73 and still had at least fivechildren at home when he died.

    The Family Curse

One description of Huntingtons chorea is as follows:

Huntington's Chorea is a particularly devastating disease because symptoms normally do notoccur until after the age of 35, but can onset later (the earlier the onset, the more severe thedisease tends to be). It is principally a movement disorder, with the first observable symptomsmanifesting themselves as 'clumsiness', but as the disease progresses the movements becomeuncontrollable. These movements appear to be very bizarre and include odd bodily postures.Other symptoms are also apparent including forgetfulness and irritability or withdrawing (in theearly stages) progressing to dementia with severe memory loss and lack of reasoning.

The illness may continue relentlessly for 10-20 years once it has been diagnosed, and cause ofdeath is commonly heart disease after a bout of illness, or due to falls, choking or suicide beforedementia sets in. New advances in medicine may provide hope for patients suffering from thisdevastating disease in the future. Research and clinical trials are currently underway.

Huntingtons chorea was the curse of the Van Stone family. A newspaper story include with the Van Stone

scroll relates the following on the family. For privacy reasons, the original article did not provide names.A man killed his own child and was sent to an Ontario sanitarium. (The man was John VanStone, father of Mary Van Stone). Clarke and MacArthur found the man insane fromHuntingtons Chorea. They then studied his family history. The mans grandfather and hisbrother came from England and settled in southern Ontario. The brother was sound andremained so and from him no cases of chorea descended. The man V developed Huntingtonschorea. Since then the disease has radiated from this focus as far east as the MaritimeProvinces, as far west as Manitoba, and as far south as Michigan Illinois, Iowa, Missouri. Theinvestigators got information as to 101 individuals among Vs family. Of these 101, 83 wereblood descendants, the other 18 having married into the family. Of the 83, 37 had developedHuntingtons chorea.

Since the disease does not appear until after 25 and sometimes not until 50, it is impossible tosay whether some of the cousins and most of the nieces and nephews will finally escape.

Johns daughter Mary did not escape. She died in Pontiac State Hospital, PontiacMichigan, of Huntingtons chorea. She was 45. Mary had seven surviving children. Her youngest child was Charles Butt Jr , father of Olive Butt. All but one of Maryschildren had the great fortune to escape their mothers fate. Oldest daughter Lucywas not so fortunate. She died of Huntingtons at the age of 52 and passed thedisease on to her son Johnson who died of it at the age of 47. Lucy and Johnsonwere the last sufferers of the Van Stone family curse in our line. Since it isobviously a genetic disease that always either occurs or doesnt occur we can feelsafe that the curse has been lifted, as Charles Butt Jr. didnt have it.

The Tragic Life of Sam Cassman

Sam Cassman was the grandson and namesake of the full-blooded Delaware Indian Sam Cassman. Sams

father Philander died when he was thirteen. He became an orphan at eighteen when his mother died fiveyears later. Sam left Delaware County, Indiana and moved across the state to Lafayette in TippecanoeCounty. Here he met a young Irish girl named Mary Kahl and they married when he was 24.

Things were wonderful for the first few years of their marriage. They had five children, first four boysJames, William, Harry and George and then daughter Jennie. The soap opera phase of their lives becameapparent around 1870 when Sam was in his early 40s.

In 1871 Sams eldest son, nine year old James, died. Sams 39 year old younger brother died late in thatsame year. Sam and Marys last child, a daughter named Mary was born a few months later. Sam andMarys marriage was obviously troubled. Sam had a daughter by a woman named Jeannot in 1873, the yearafter Mary was born.

Sams wife Mary then died two years later at the age of just 37. Sam was a widower with five children andan illegitimate daughter. Then four year old Mary died the following year.

From age thirteen to age thirty-nine Sam lostHis fatherHis mother, making him an orphanHis oldest son at the age of nineHis brotherHis wife, leaving him a widower with five childrenAnd then his youngest daughter at the age of four

In the 1880 census Sam is found working with his younger brother Oliver. Oliver had a business selling ice.The children dont appear anywhere in the census. Since son Harry is alive and well in Lafayette years later,it is easy to imagine that they stayed in the area. They apparently werent living with their uncle though.

Sam married Rena Sneathen in 1885 when he was forty-eight. They boys were 21, 19 and 17, daughterJennie was 15. Its not clear what happened to Jeannot or her daughter Ida. Tragedy wasnt done with Sam

yet as Ida died when she was just twenty-one. Sam even died tragically. Twenty years after marrying Rena, while still working for Oliver in the Ice business, the sixty seven year old Sam was killed in a horse wagonaccident.

    Truly a tragic life.

    The Downing Bunch

Ada Downing Cassmans grandmother Susan had an interesting story. She had a two yearold son and was pregnant with her second child when her husband Abisha was tragicallykilled at just twenty five.

Abishas thirteen years older brother Joseph had also found tragedy in his life. His firstwife also died at age twenty five leaving behind a young son. He remarried within twoyears, but his second wife again died at the age of twenty five after having a daughter.

Joseph and Susan were now both without spouses, but with four children under the age of ten. Joseph wasseventeen years older than Susan but perhaps their common fate drew them together. They married andcombined their families. They went on and had seven more children, their youngest coming when Josephwas 61! Altogether they had eleven children between them. Since Susan re-married her husbands brothertheir children were step-children, half-brothers and sisters, cousins, and normal brothers and sister, all at thesame time. How complicated!

    Abraham Lincoln (Feaster, that is)

The Feasters originally lived in Rockingham County Virginia. As the area grew inpopulation the western half split off to become Hardy County. During the Civil War HardyCounty was among many other western Virginia counties who disagreed with the actions of

the Confederacy and split off in 1863 to become the state of West Virginia. The Feasterfamily at first living in the same county, and not having moved an inch, was now actuallysplit across the border in two different states within two different countries!

John and Mary Feaster had a son in the summer of 1864, just over four months prior to theelection in November. They made their sympathies quite clear when the named the childfor the incumbent candidate, President Abraham Lincoln. The war ended soon after and ofcourse Lincoln was tragically shot before young Abe was a year old.

Ive always wondered what effect those divisions had on the families. My guess would be that it would bevery little. Blood runs thick, and the families in the area were all inter-related. Abe and his second wifeAlice were second cousins. None of the families owned slaves. They were all farmers working hard to getby from year to year. I imagine that life went on as always, and they hopped the North-South border withoutany more thought than was given when the area was all within Rockingham County.

    The Importance of Being Ernest

Now back to the court case that started the story of our cousin, the King of England. Ernest Butt died in 1983at the age of 80. He left a considerable estate of over $200,000, a nice sum today and even more valuable in1983. His wife had died earlier and they had no children. The case was brought by Lemoyne Pfeffer whosought to prove that she was the sole surviving relative of Ernest and should therefore receive the estate. Toprove her case she offered all of the great genealogical data mentioned earlier. Ernests mother was CarolineButt. Lemoyne was the granddaughter of Carolines sister Lucy and therefore Ernests second cousin.Caroline and Lucy were the children of Charles Butt Sr and Mary Van Stone.

Buried in all of those dry old records was an old family secret. Lemoyne was a closer cousin than firstsuspected. Lemoynes mother Helen wasnt just Ernests cousin, Helen was also Ernests sister!

To understand you need to go back the turn of the century. In 1900, Mary Van Stone Butt was sufferingfrom the family curse, Huntingtons chorea. Daughter Caroline was thirteen in 1900. Her motherscondition must have been devastating to her. She may have known her grandfather had died the same way,

and probably knew he had killed on of his own children. Eventually, Mary was moved to the Sanitarium tolive out her days. In 1902, older sister Lucy had been married for seven years to Fred Viet. Carolines oldersisters Amelia and Mariah were twenty-one and twenty years old respectively and probably didnt have a lotof influence in their younger sisters life. Caroline was now fifteen, her mother was in a hospital, dying of ahorrible family disease and she was largely alone.

Lucys husband, Carolines brother-in-law Fred Viet was twenty-seven in 1902. Apparently, he was able tocomfort Caroline. Four days before Christmas in 1902 fifteen year-old Caroline brought his son Ernest intothe world. The family somehow weathered the turmoil and Lucy and Fred stayed together. Lucy had threechildren under the age of four and had just lost her one year old daughter Lemoine about two months beforeErnest was born, so she was probably motivated to forgive Fred.

According to family story, Fred gave Caroline $500 on Ernests behalf. Of course, Caroline being a minorstill, the money went to her father Charles. Charles is said to have taken Ernests money and traveled toEngland to visit his cousins. Nice.

Caroline must have remained lonely. Not long after Ernest was born, her mother died. Soon after Carolinebore another illegitimate child, this time a daughter named Ruth. It is not known who the father was. Ruthwas adopted by a Thomas Van Stone. Caroline had an Uncle Thomas Van Stone, her mothers brother. It isvery likely that it was this uncle who took in Ruth. How Ernest was taken care of during childhood is

unknown. A few years later at the age of nineteen, Caroline married Carl Murphy. Carls father was said tobe the police chief of Bay City. Ironically, Carl and Caroline had no children together. Ernest is not listedwith them in either the 1910 or 1920 census. However, Carolines father Charles is listed in the 1920 census, living with the Murphys.

In the end everything turned out well. Caroline got married. Ernest lived a long, obviously sucessful andhopefully happy life. Ruth was taken care of. Lucy and Fred stayed together and raised their family. Ofcourse Lucys fate and that of her son Johnson was to suffer horrible death by chorea, but that was unrelatedto the incident that led to the birth of Ernest.

Last but not least, did cousin Lemoyne get the money? Alls well that ends well. Yes she did.
