Landmark LED Retrofit Project for Fresh & Easy Stores in US LED retail lighting leader and top case manufacturer to retrofit medium temperature cases with energy efficient lighting in 159 locations

Columbus, GA – May 12, 2010 – Representing a retail food industry first, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market – US subsidiary of Tesco plc, one of the world's largest supermarket groups – will have its medium temperature cases in its 159 stores retrofitted with LED lighting, a landmark project made possible by the partnership of Nualight Ltd, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting solutions for retail, and Kysor/Warren, one of the top manufacturers of refrigerated cases in North America.

Fresh & Easy is already seen as a US industry leader for its environmental efforts. On average, Fresh & Easy stores use 30% less energy than a typical supermarket, which helps customers save money – and also helps the environment. Fresh & Easy offers customer recycling in every store, and uses advanced refrigeration and freezer units, and uses skylights and windows to cut back on energy usage. The company also recycles or reuses all of its display packaging.

“LED fixtures allow energy savings of up to 60 percent, both from lighting and refrigeration energ y. LED technology also eliminates maintenance costs due to the longer lifetime. Retail stores are among the highest commercial users of energy with lighting an d refrigeration accounting for 78 percent of all ener gy usage in supermarkets”

Clinton unveils LA's LED street lamp initiative Clinton makes a surprise appearance Monday, announcing the largest LED retrofit in the U.S.

Tue, Feb 17 2009 at 2:33 AM EST

Monday was a big day for green jobs in L.A. While his better half was off in Japan honoring the Japanese sun god, former

President Clinton paid a visit to Los Angeles to promote solar energy and help Mayor Villaraigosa launch what is the largest LED

street lighting retrofit in the U.S. A joint project of the city of Los Angeles and the Clinton Climate Initiative, the project will

serve as a case study for other cities to significantly reduce their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

The mayor announced that the city will replace 140,000 street lamps with new energy efficient LED lights. The LED's last twice

as long and use about 60 percent the energy of a typical street lamp, saving more than 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide from

entering the atmosphere and about $10 million in operational costs.

At the same time, the initiative will create immediate employment in "green collar" jobs, sustained over five years. This

expenditure sounds surprising given California's dire economic situation, but with a combination of rebates and loans, the

estimated $70 million project will be paid off in seven years, after which the city will see $10 million in annual savings.

As Clinton said, "This partnership is a tremendous example of how cities can cut costs, while also making a significant impact in

the fight against climate change. I thank mayor Villaraigosa and the

city for their leadership."

Lighting is one of the larger expenditures a city typically pays out —

anywhere from 10 to 38 percent of total electricity costs. So LED

street lights are a way to get some great green cred while

significantly curtailing a city's operational budget. The lights are quite

hi-tech — a square panel of several hundred light-emitting diodes

(LED's) which come equipped with built-in sensors that signal if there

are any problems in the unit.

After L.A. kicks off its LED project, the Clinton Climate Foundation

will help other major cities follow suit.

This is one of the first projects to further Villaraigosa's GREEN LA

program, which seeks to make Los Angeles the greenest metropolis

in the U.S. by increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy (35

percent renewables by 2020) and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030.

New Star Market to Be the First All-LED Store

Sep 16, 2009 6:00 AM, By MICHAEL GARRY

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Supervalu will be opening a Star Market outlet in Chesnut Hill, Mass., on Oct. 30 that will be the first supermarket to use high-efficiency LED lighting for all lighting applications inside and outside the store, said Keith Tarver, manager of electrical systems for Minneapolis-based Supervalu.

He mentioned the opening during a presentation on LED lighting yesterday here at the Food Marketing Institute’s Energy & Technical Services Conference. LED lighting, which lasts much longer and is more energy efficient that fluorescent lighting, has been used in outside signage and in refrigerated and frozen cases in supermarkets, but not in overhead lighting. At the Star Market, LED lighting will also be used to illuminate the parking lot.

Stop & Shop Touts Energy Program at First Energy Star Store Sep 10, 2007 12:00 PM, By MICHAEL GARRY

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop here last month used the new “Energy Star” status of a store in Southbury, Conn. — the chain's first outlet to be given that distinction by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — as a platform to highlight its chainwide efforts to cut energy costs and contribute to a better environment.

The EPA bestows the Energy Star label on buildings that use about 35% less energy than average. Chains with multiple Energy Star stores include Food Lion and Giant Eagle.

About 3,200 buildings nationally have been certified with the Energy Star label, said Jean Lupinacci, EPA's director of the Energy Star commercial and industrial branch. “Those buildings annually save $600 million in energy, removing the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions of 900,000 cars,” she said.

The EPA requires an engineer to certify that an Energy Star store has met its requirements, and a store must present an analysis of 12 months of its utility bills.

THE VALUE OF ENERGY STAR RATING:

“Sixty percent of American consumers are influenced by the Energy Star label,” said Lupinacci. “Stop & Shop will experience the power of Energy Star.” Saving $1 in energy costs at a supermarket, she added, “is equal to selling $59 in groceries.”

Chili’s restaurant chain installs 125,000 LED lamps 06 Oct 2010

In what is claimed to be the largest US roll-out of LED lamp technology to date, Chili’s is installing LED lamps in 827 restaurants.

A number of restaurants and retail stores have jumped on the green bandwagon recently by installing LED replacement lamps to save money and improve the customer experience. For example, electronics retailer Best Buy is installing 35,000 LED replacement lamps from CRS Electronics. Other examples include a complete retrofit of the Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurant in Newtown, PA, while Osram Sylvania is supplying thousands of retrofit lamps to GNC stores (see Related Stories). Brinker International, parent company of Chili’s

Restaurants and Maggiano’s Restaurants, has recently installed LED lighting from Eco-story LED Lighting Solutions (Portland, Maine) as part of a re-lamp project in all of its corporate restaurants. The project involves installing 125,000 LED lamps in the interior and exterior of all 827 corporate restaurants. Eco-story claims this will be “the largest US roll-out of LED lamp technology to date.” The project is currently about 80% complete.

“After testing the technology in ten stores, Brinker determined its annual savings would be approximately $87.00 per store, per week. Over 827 stores, this equates to more than $3.7 million per year” In addition to saving money, the LED lamps are also improving the look and ambiance of the Chili’s restaurants versus traditional lighting, according to Kevin Falconer, Brinker’s Senior Director of Design. “Our team studied LED lights for a long time and tested many makes and models, and we feel our stores look better now than before,” he said. The lamps emit a warm-white light with a color temperature of 2700K, and are built using Cree XLamp LEDs. A variety of lamp types have been retrofitted, for example 4.9 W LED MR16s have replaced older lamps ranging from 30 to 50W, and 60W PAR20 and PAR30 lamps have been replaced by 6W LED products. Candle bulbs and indoor and outdoor globe lights have also been replaced.

Best Buy installs LED replacement lamps 21 Sep 2010

The retailer will install 35,000 MR16 LED lamps at various locations.

Best Buy Co, Inc., a multinational retailer of technology and entertainment products, has made a commitment to replace 35,000 50-watt halogen lamps with 6-watt LED-based MR16 lamps. The initial rollout of 3,150 replacement lamps will be delivered this month to 50 Best Buy locations. They will be used to highlight digital camera displays and Magnolia Home Theater system rooms, where the capability of dimming lights is essential

to provide customers with optimal real-life settings. "Our new driver technology allows our lamps to maintain superior performance and [to] dim on electronic transformers and industry-standard dimmers," said Riesebosch. "Electronic transformer-powered light fixtures represent a significant portion of the market, which, until now have not been able to utilize LEDs without flickering."

“The replacement lamps are expected to generate an 80% reduction in electrical demand and consumption for Best Buy” "After testing our LED MR16 product in their retail environment, the decision to reduce energy while maintaining quality was easy," said Riesebosch. CRS says that its LED MR16 lamps have a "unique" driver-system technology that allows them to be dimmable while still maintaining "best-in-class" color rendering and lumen output.

Beaumont, California enters the third year of a comprehensive street-light upgrade project while Urbandale and Ankeny, Iowa jointly win an EECBG award for SSL street lights. The city of Beaumont, California began an LED street-light upgrade project in 2008 and hopes to

complete the installations in 2011 using fixtures manufactured by the Stresscrete Group. A US

Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) totaling

$290,860 will allow the cities of Urbandale and Ankeny, Iowa to retrofit street lights with solid-

state lighting (SSL) with a goal of

“40% energy savings”

Beaumont recently posted an article about the LED street-light project on its city web site proclaiming the LED lights as “the talk of the town." With LEDs, the city sought to both reduce energy costs and comply with a Dark Sky ordinance that the city adopted back in 2005 and that was highlighted in another recent web article from the city. The city notes that the 163 LED street lights that it has already installed do a better job of focusing the light on the ground compared to the high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights that were replaced. Beaumont has utilized a mixture of decorative post-top LED luminaires in areas such as the city’s Old Town area along with cobra head luminaires for roadway lighting. According to an article on the New Streetlights website, the city has already installed around 200 King Luminaire fixtures from Stresscrete and will add 32 more luminaires this year. Electrical contractor Beaumont Electric is buying and installing the fixtures.

Applebee's Will Retrofit All of its New York Restaurants with LED Lights Submitted by eBoom Staff on September 15, 2010

After seeing significant energy savings

at two New York City locations that

underwent LED lighting retrofits,

Applebee's has decided to refit all 31 of

its New York restaurants with LED

lights.

The company, which labels itself as the world's largest casual dining restaurant, reduced its average kilowatt hour light load by 80% at both its test locations. Applebee's utilized both exterior and interior LED light bulbs from three manufacturers -- Cree Lighting,

Janmar Lighting, and Dialight.

Beyond using less energy to produce light, the LED bulbs have not only led to lower air conditioning costs because they emit less heat, but have also reduced maintenance costs because of their extremely long lifespan, 50,000 hours.

Food distributor, manufacturer slash lighting energy costs through LED upgrades By Heather Clancy | August 25, 2010, 8:45am PDT

Intelligent LED lighting tech company Digital Lumens is offering up information about one of its first major customers: Food distributor Maines Paper & Food Service from Conklin, N.Y., reports that it has cut its lighting-related energy usage by 87 percent through an upgrade to the Digital Lumens technology.

The facility was especially hard to retrofit because it combines both freezer and refrigerator space with dry areas. Pat DeOrdio, vice president of Maines Paper & Food Service, said he researched close to 10 different technologies before settling on the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System.

“Food distributor Mines Paper & Food Service from Conklin, N.Y., reports that it has cut its lighting-related energy usage by 87 percent through an upgrade to the Digital Lumens technology”

One of the reasons DeOrdio selected the Digital Lumens LED technology is because it was the best solution for the cold environments in his company’s 460,000-square-foot headquarters facility — able to turn on and off in a matter of seconds. Comparable fluroscent lights that he evaluated were required to stay on perpetually in order to stay warm enough to light all the way. This would have required Maines Paper & Food Service to pump more cooling into its freezers and refrigerators. Digital Lumens was able to cut not only the lighting costs but also cooling costs for the facility, he says.

In all, there were 484 lights installed in the facility, a retrofit that DeOrdio says will take about 1 year to show a return on investment.

Anchorage LED retrofits shine: new lights save energy, money, salmon and health Publication Date: 01-AUG-09 / Alaska Business Monthly

Call it a revolution in lighting. As energy prices continue to soar and concerns about a sustainable environment grow, Anchorage is following suit with other cities across the nation and world, investing millions of dollars to replace out-of-date street lamps with Beta light emitting diode (LED) lighting that saves energy, protects the environment, reduces maintenance costs and provides better light quality for improved visibility and safety. “Current LED technology provides between 50 percent and 60 percent cost savings through simple retrofits of existing HPS fixtures”

“…When combined with centralized control systems used to dim streetlights, depending on the weather and time of day, in some instances, studies show Anchorage energy savings approaching 75 percent over its HPS system”

In a city where about 85 days per year have less than eight hours of daylight, energy efficient lighting is especially critical, though LED lighting is also being looked at in cities that are not daylight challenged. Across the country, 61 million to 68 million roadway lamps turn on each night, with utilities, municipalities and state governments consuming 1 percent of the country's electricity to light roadways. Roadway lighting also consumes 1.3 percent of all end-use lighting and can account for up to 40 percent of a city's

The City of Ann Arbor spent years working with LED street lighting vendors to perfect a retrofit for its beautiful Lumec globe lights.

“The expected payoff for this effort is that the 1,600 new LED street lights will save the city more than $100,000 a year in energy and maintenance-cost savings and reduce energy use for

street lighting by 50 percent, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,425 tons annually” “The decision to switch to LED lighting was based on three years of extensive research on the energy and maintenance-cost savings associated with LED lighting; citizen surveys and a successful trial of 25 LED lights spanning a city block,” said Mayor John Hieftje.

As a result of the trial, the city was awarded a $630,000 grant from the Ann Arbor Downtown Authority to fund LED retrofits for all the downtown globe lights. The city is moving forward with LED lighting in a variety of applications indoors and out.

Macy’s Retrofits 86 Stores with

LED Bulbs, Plans to Save Millions Date Posted: December 10th, 2010

Another company is jumping on the LED bandwagon.

Macy’s has decided to make

the switch from traditional

incandescent lights to LED

lights in 86 of its stores.

SlashGear reports that over

the lifespan of the bulbs,

Macy’s will save millions of

dollars in energy costs, and

will vastly improve its carbon footprint as a corporation. The retrofit will involve replacing 117,000 incandescent bulbs used for

accent and overhead lighting. Taking their place are new LED

bulbs that will use 73 percent less energy and last up to 10 times

as long as the incandescent bulbs, which had a meager lifespan

of six months. According to SlashGear, Macy’s will be saving

16,200 megawatts of power per hour every year, the equivalent

of planting 65,500 trees. Once additional factors are accounted

for, like lower maintenance costs, less need for air conditioning

(thanks to the low heat output of LEDs) and the fact that that the LED bulbs are made without toxic materials, the retrofit

represents one of the most environmentally-friendly moves

Macy’s has ever made.

LARGEST STREET LIGHT PROGRAM IN LATIN AMERICA:

25,507 LED STREET LIGHTS TO BE INSTALLED

Dec 10, 2010

The Mexican municipality of Othón P. Blanco in the state of Quintana Roo has announced plans to install 25,507 GE Evolve LED street lights in what it claims

will be the largest installation of LED street lights in Latin America. Quintana Roo Governor Félix González Canto announced the SSL street light project and a goal of saving 51% in energy usage. Canto linked the plan to the

Mexican government’s Special 2009-2012 Climate Change Program. The street light retrofit will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the municipality claiming that the reduction is “the equivalent of taking the approximately 40,000 cars that operate throughout Othón Blanco off the roads in a 10-year period.” The greenhouse emissions angle is particularly important in Mexico as the country’s economy would be adversely impacted by climate change. The 2009 annual report of the World Bank's Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) notes that 71% of the Mexican GDP is at risk from climate change. ”Governments have a responsibility to seek efficient solutions to meet our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals,” said Municipal President of Othón P. Blanco, Andrés F. Ruiz Morcillo. “It is our job at all levels of government to support the country’s growth and the well-being of our citizens. LEDs are the future of lighting solutions and Chetumal and its municipality are setting the standards for other cities in Latin America and the world to follow.”

Las Vegas’ RED ROCK CASINO Transitions to LED 14 Jul 2010

Las Vegas is seeing a transition to LED Lights. Red Rock Casino has retrofitted to AC-LED lamps driven from the existing low-voltage 12VAC infrastructure provide a simple 0.5W LED replacement for 5W xenon lamps. Before and after photos show a remarkable difference in lighting quality using 1/10 of the power with simple LED Retrofit.

BEFORE

“The AC-LED lamp lifetime is 30,000 hours, compared with 1,000 hours

for the xenon alternative”

“The return on investment for this retrofit was under 12 months on energy alone (75 kW reducing to 7.5 kW). If you included man hours and lamp replacement cost, the retrofit paid for itself as soon as it was completed!”

Hollywood Station Condominium underwent a $300,000 LED retrofit with ZERO out of pocket expense. The results were nothing less than staggering. Apart for the cost savings, the carbon emissions reduction is also dramatic – equivalent to planting thousands of trees over 10 years. Other Benefits, LED lights do not contain dangerous substances such as mercury which is found in both incandescent and florescent bulbs.

Food Distributor cuts lighting-related energy

use by a staggering 87 percent with LED Lights

Intelligent LED lighting tech company Digital

Lumens is offering up information about one

of its first major customers: Food distributor

Maines Paper & Food Service from Conklin,

N.Y., reports that it has cut its lighting-related

energy usage by 87 percent through an

upgrade to the Digital Lumens technology.

The facility was especially hard to retrofit

because it combines both freezer and

refrigerator space with dry areas. Pat DeOrdio, vice president of Maines Paper & Food Service,

said he researched close to 10 different technologies before settling on the Digital Lumens

Intelligent Lighting System.

“Food distributor Mines Paper & Food Service from

Conklin, N.Y., reports that it has cut its lighting-related

energy usage by 87 percent through an upgrade to the

Digital Lumens technology”

One of the reasons DeOrdio selected the Digital Lumens LED technology is because it was the

best solution for the cold environments in his company’s 460,000-square-foot headquarters

facility — able to turn on and off in a matter of seconds. Comparable fluroscent lights that he

evaluated were required to stay on perpetually in order to stay warm enough to light all the

way. This would have required Maines Paper & Food Service to pump more cooling into its

freezers and refrigerators. Digital Lumens was able to cut not only the lighting costs but also

cooling costs for the facility, he says. In all, there were 484 lights installed in the facility, a

retrofit that DeOrdio says will take about 1 year to show a return on investment.

How Starbucks saves millions a year with LED lighting

Starbucks recently finished replacing nearly all of its incandescent and halogen lighting with LEDs during a two-year roll-out to over 7,000 company-owned stores, most in the United States and Canada, but with some in Europe and Asia. This is the largest deployment yet of LED technology in an application that is very sensitive to the quality of light; Starbucks' success proves that the new digital lighting is ready for mass install.

Jim Hanna, Director of Environmental Impact for Starbucks confirmed that the LED lighting program is on target to slash consumption by more than 80 percent compared to existing lighting. My back-of-the envelope calculations [see notes below] found that

• Each LED light bulb saves approximately $30 annually in energy costs and eliminates the equivalent CO2 as half a barrel of oil; • Each 1,000 square foot store on average would save nearly $600 annually and eliminate the equivalent CO2 as 10 barrels of oil

LED light retrofit saves $4,200 per month for just

one of 330 Furniture Row stores

Furniture Row owns 330 specialty furniture stores under various brand names. In this case 11-Watt Cree LED lights replaced 250 highly inefficient 90-Watt halogen bulbs. Between all of the stores employees were spending 15 hours per week just replacing bulbs. These lights are rated to last 50,000 hours. That means that these lights should operate for 17 years burning 8 hours a day seven days a week.
