SKILLED TRADES EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

• Connecting employers and employees • 13 offices across BC – 47 staff including 27

placement specialists on the ground • 6,000 employer contacts per year • Over 10,000 placements throughout BC.

• Program started in 2006 and funded through the Provincial Government ( ITA and Ministry of Jobs Tourism and Skills Training

• Purpose to assist eligible participants (not eligible for EI) from typically underutilized labour sources (aboriginal, women, immigrants)

• Demand driven that starts by identifying the job opportunity and assessing/matching the right individual into the position.

• Focus – Help workers move into apprenticeship training/positions

• Created in 2012 to assist employers source skilled workers offshore when they are not able to fill the positions with a Canadian

• Assists employer and work to navigate the immigration system

• Fee based program entirely funded by the employers and no charge to a worker.

• Focus is hiring and training British Columbians and Canadians for BC jobs first, • Supporting BC employers by connecting international workers for the specialized

skilled.

• A 19 month program started in September 2015 funded by Federal Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

• Provides pre-settlement services for internationally trained workers who have been

approved through the immigration process.

Services provided; • Provides information on trades and opportunities • Provide assessments on construction employability • Conduct research to show top demand trades in BC • Provide job leads pre-arrival whose skills are appropriate for the industry.

LNG Canada is stepping up to support BC’s construction employers by providing resources to help fund industry and apprenticeship training in BC.

Trades Training Fund $1m fund designed to support industry and apprenticeship training for construction trades.

LNG Connect Employment specialist for Northern BC will be focused on helping workers connect to local construction jobs.

The Hire Guide is an online resource that helps BC’s construction employers understand skilled labour issues in BC and connect with New Canadian skill sets.

• Hundreds of large-scale construction projects, and thousands of smaller ones are planned for every part of the province – with roughly 60% of them slated for in BC’s northern regions.

• Industry needs to overcome a major challenge – Skilled workers are in

short supply.
