The Newsletter of HEREFORD CATHEDRAL Perpetual Trust Patron: His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales Out of the Cloisters Spring 2015 Roofs for the future number of years, unfortunately there is likely to be a high level of replacement needed, though as many of the older timbers as possible will be retained. ‘We are exceptionally grateful to these two funds for their generosity,’ said the Dean, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor, ‘not least as such repairs are less glamorous but absolutely essential in keeping the cathedral safe and secure.’ ‘We were overwhelmed last year with the support we received for the repair of the north transept roof, though unfortunately with the challenges we have over the coming ten years we will be needing to call on the support of many again. If we are able to keep the cathedral watertight and weather proofed, it makes a significant impact on our longer term care of it.’ It is anticipated that the work on the roofs will start in early spring and take up to nine months. The Repair Fund is supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and ChurchCare. Additional funding for works to the Booth Porch has been kindly given by the Headley Trust. A grant of £300,000 from the First World War Cathedral Repair Fund and a further gift from the Headley Trust will make a significant start to repairing and restoring a number of significant roofs. The most pressing works needed are to the medieval Booth Porch, the north choir aisle (the roof above the masons’ yard) and the roof of the former chorister vestry, where those choristers who served in the First World War are commemorated. In addition to replacing the lead, the under board and timbers will be inspected and new wood spliced in where needed. As the roofs have been leaking for a Sound system W ork continues on the project (also supported by the First World War Cathedral Repair Fund) to install a new sound system and hearing loop in the cathedral. The project, which has been an aspiration for many years, will include a suite of new speakers and microphones throughout the building. It is hoped that the state-of-the-art system will also include the ability to record services and, in due course, to broadcast them on a regular basis. This will be a wonderful opportunity by which we can share our music and ministry around the diocese and the world, as well as providing a means by which those who are less able to attend services are still able to enjoy our music and liturgy. While the core of the project has attracted funding from the DCMS and ChurchCare, additional support of £35,000 is still needed to enable the additional broadcasting equipment to be installed. If you would like to contribute to the project, please return the reply slip or contact the Trust office. We would be delighted to hear from you. Choir thanks T hank you to all those who have sent messages of congratulations to the choir for their singing during the autumn term and, in particular, over Christmas. Life in the choir is a demanding one yet all appreciate the joy and pleasure that their music brings on so many occasions. The Enthronement of Bishop Richard Frith as the 105th Bishop of Hereford was a highlight of a very busy term. If you were one of the 4,500 people to attend one of the cathedral’s various services between the carol service on 22 December and Evensong on Christmas Day, you will have found the same remarkable standard of music at each service. This artistic excellence, offered within dignified liturgy, all combined to create some superb services. ‘So often people talk about the prayerfulness of the services and how the music and liturgy flow together,’ said Canon Andrew Piper, the Precentor. ‘We are delighted that people find this to be the case – our aspiration is that every act of worship should focus our hearts and minds on God and inspire us to continue serving our neighbour in Christ’s name.’ The spring and summer terms will give little rest to the choir: in addition to the normal eight services sung each week, they will give a Holy Week performance of JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion and will sing Joseph Haydn’s Mass setting Paukenmesse at the annual orchestral Eucharist to mark the Feast of Consecration. The choir year will then culminate in the Three Choirs Festival, which will be celebrating its 300th anniversary. The choir costs around £330,000 to run each year, the vast majority of which has to be raised on an annual basis. If you would like to join our group of benefactors who make an annual gift in support of the Choral Foundation, which includes the care of the great Willis organ, or to commit a legacy, please contact Glyn Morgan in the Trust office. All support greatly appreciated. Celebrating 800Over the coming six monthsthe cathedral will be celebratingthe 800th anniversary of thesealing of the original version ofthe Magna Carta atRunnymede with its ownexemplar of a 1217 MagnaCarta on display from 23March. This revised version ofone of the greatest documentsin the history of the world, isclaimed by many experts to beof greater enduring influencethan the earlier exemplarsbecause material specific toKing John’s dispute with hisbarons was removed, andcertain aspirational clauseswere rewritten in a workableform. This was the version thatcontinued to be reissued.

‘It is a fascinating history,’ saidCanon Chris Pullin, Chancellor, who is leading the cathedral’sMagna Carta programme. ‘Wehope all will come and see ourfree exhibition in the nave,

which sets our document intothe context of what washappening in the 13th century.’

Featuring in the story are twoof our bishops, both of whomare buried in the cathedral.Bishop Braose, the only bishopto join the rebel barons, was atRunnymede in 1215. BishopCantilupe, later canonised as StThomas of Hereford, played amajor part in the issuing of the1265 edition.

The Nave exhibition, which isfree to all, will be staged from23 March – 30 September, during which time the MagnaCarta will be on display in theMappa Mundi Exhibition, forwhich there will be the normalexhibition charges to enter. Many other activities will betaking place on site and aroundthe county and full details canbe found on the cathedralwebsite.

Teams of eight are invited withtickets at £30 each and thisyear we have also introduced astudent/under 30s ticket for£20. We hope this willencourage many of our formerchoristers and other youngersupporters to join us.

Were you a server?During the Three ChoirsFestival a lunch is hosted onSunday 26 July for all thosewho have been involved in themusic and liturgy of thecathedral. Former organists, layclerks and choristers will beinvited, along with others forwhom the choir has been asignificant part of their life.

This year we would like toextend the invitation to serversand members of the altarparty. Whilst we have the listof the current teams and knowmany of those who haveretired over recent years, it

‘It is an immense honour to be hosting such a significant festivalin Hereford,’ said Geraint Bowen, the cathedral’s director of musicwho is also the artistic director of the Hereford festival. ‘With somany significant anniversaries this year ranging from the MagnaCarta 800th to the centenary of the Herefordshire Regimentparticipating at Gallipoli, it has given us a great opportunity tohave a wide and diverse programme of music.’

My pledge tothe cathedral

I forgot everything but the voices of thechoir, echoing, it seemed, from above thehigh altar; I saw nothing but little flushesof pink and blue falling on the stonethrough stained windows. The organ of‘Hereford...’ is, as it should be, the voice ofthe cathedral: its calm sweetness places ahand over the spirit; and in this church, with the organ whispering through theaisles, the world and its problems seemover the hills of reality.
