IntroductionPrimary and Comprehensive
healthcare for patients who come for treatment,diagnosis or followup.
Point of first contact between hospital and patient.
So OPD is also called “shop window” of hospital.

stone to health promotion and disease prevention.
Can reduce no. of admissions for incare in hospital.
Cost of treatment is less in OPD compared to inpatient so cost effectiveness is obtained.

Key planning and Design parameters OPD should be a separate complex within the hospital building. OPD shiold be in a place where it can share services for diagnostics
department,medical imaging,laboratory,pharmacy,blood bank etc. Should be places near hospital entry to avoid movement in the
wards. Barrier free design. Either centralized polyclinic or decentralized speciality clinic. Effective, comprehensible and proppr signages. Peak hours should be estimated. Privacy of patient to be taken care of. There should be scope for future expansion. Educational resourse areas for patient awareness are to be placed
in waiting room Waiting and public areas should be large enough to accommodate
family and friends. Space recommendation is 0.8m2 per person for 1/3 rd ofavg daily
number.
