First Community Credit Union is cele-brating its 80th year serving its mem-bers in the Missouri communities of St.
Louis County, St. Louis City, Franklin,Jefferson, St. Charles and Warren counties inMissouri and the Illinois counties of Madison,Monroe and St. Clair.
In November of 1934, Monsanto CreditUnion opened to serve Monsanto employees. After running this successful business for morethan forty years, the Credit Union expandedits field of membership to serve companiesand communities beyond Monsanto.
By 1983, the businessdecided that its name neededto change to reflect theirgrowing membership.Monsanto Credit Unionbecame the now well-knownFirst Community CreditUnion.
In 2006 First Communityopened its impressive head-quarters in Chesterfield on I-64 near Boone’s Crossing.
Its architecture is as iconic as the businessitself; the building features a curved wall ofwindows and the blue, barrel roof which is thesignature of First Community branchesthroughout town.
First Community is different from otherfinancial institutions because it is owned by itsmembers. Members put their money in a vari-ety of savings accounts, and that money, inturn, is lent to other members.
After operating expenses and reserverequirements are met, loan income is returnedto all members in the form of dividends andcomprehensive financial services. Those servic-es include deposit accounts such as moneymanagement and high interest checking andloans for homes, cars, recreational vehicles, home improvements personal use and more.
First Community has over one hundredother convenience products and services:online banking, mobile banking and instant-issue debit cards are only a few.
Glenn D. Barks is President & CEO ofFirst Community. A native of St. Louis,Glenn is a graduate of Mehlville High Schooland Southeast Missouri State. He joined thecompany as Executive Vice President in the
1980s following a career in the savings andloan industry.
His more than 40 years of experience infinancial service highlights First Community’sprofessionalism and history as a trusted entity. In 2001, Glenn was named Chief ExecutiveOfficer. Since his tenure began, FirstCommunity has grown from $184 million to$2 billion in assets.
Glenn’s level of tenure is typical at FirstCommunity. Many employees retire with 25,30 or even 35 years of service. Rarely does aweek go by that someone on the staff isn’trewarded with a giant sheet cake in front oftheir peers to celebrate their anniversary of 15years with the company.
And talk about a birthday present: Eachemployee receives the day off with pay ontheir birthday.
Glenn’s management philosophy of thenearly 400 employees at First Communityshows a style that helps effect such a loyal andtrusted workforce. He doesn’t just call theshots from the “ivory tower” of FirstCommunity’s Chesterfield Headquarters, butbelieves staff should have a direct path to him.
Employees can use an on-line suggestionbox to send their ideas straight to Glennwhere he personally gives them a direct reply. Many of those suggestions have been imple-mented.
Through careful expansion, Barks hasgrown the branch network to forty locationsin Missouri and Illinois and partnered withretail giant Walmart in 16 local store loca-tions.
First Community is the largest creditunion in Missouri and among the top 100credit unions in the nation.
Join First Community Credit Union’smany branches this year in celebrating their80th birthday serving members and businessesin our area!

Cancer preys on all ages; the devastat-ing effects of this disease can turnchildhood into a calendar of appoint-
ments, treatments and diag-noses that steal the joy ofbeing a kid and replace itwith pain, isolation andchaos.
Friends of Kids withCancer works tirelessly toenrich the daily lives of children in ourarea who are undergoing treatment for,or are survivors of, cancer and blood -related diseases.
Friends of Kids with Cancer wasfounded in 1992 by Jill Turec,Developmental Specialist at MercyChildren’s Medical center, along withMolly Henry and Suzie Snowden, whowere parents of children in treatment whowitnessed their kids’ struggles and sawthe need for diversions in their lives.
With a very small staff and devotedvolunteers, the organization continues to givechildren and their families a way to recapturea sense of normalcy and fun every kiddeserves.
Judy Ciapciak has been the executive direc-tor of Friends for the past 13 years. Her pas-sion is tinged with bittersweet emotion; it takesspecial people like her to keep a positive atti-tude in the face of cancer: “Every child who isin treatment for cancer touches my heart andremains there forever,” she says. “Our daysare continually filled with sadness and happi-ness. But knowing we made a positive impactin the daily life of a child suffering from can-cer, if only for a minute, eases the frustrationsand sadness we experience.”
Friends has a three-program approach forhelping to give back a sense of normalcy, keeping the family upbeat and bringing a bitof fun back to life.
EMOTIONAL SUPPORTThe emotions and stress that build up in
patients and families of kids dealing with can-cer can be devastating. Family therapy and
support groups give them a chance to sharefeelings and find friendship among those alsodealing with cancer. Art and play therapyprovide ways to express themselves in a cre-ative, safe environment.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT Children in treatment for cancer miss school
time; they sometimes fall behind and are often
faced with future learning disabilities. Friends’programs help through tutoring, educationalassistance programs and scholarship incen-tives.
RECREATIONALSUPPORT (FUN!!)
Friends of Kids withCancer take fun very seriously. They want to make a bad day
better for each child and familyand project a positive atmosphere whateverthe circumstances.Friends regularly crams as many toys as
will fit in their designated closets at each ofthe pediatric cancer and oncology centers inSt. Louis: St. John's Mercy, CardinalGlennon and St. Louis Children's Hospital. The kids are constantly surprised with newitems in the closets. Snacks and food arealso provided at centers, with special parties and treats donated by volunteers.Tickets to events and games, family outings, toys, gift cards, shopping trips and numer-
ous special events throughout the year helpput a smile on faces and leave families withuplifting memories.
YOU CAN HELPThe number of families Friends serves is
fluid and ever-changing; from newly diag-nosed children to those already in treatment, those suffering a relapse and those survivorswho are learning to deal with the long-termeffects of this virulent disease. But regardlessof their status in the cycle of cancer, all remaina part of the Friends family forever.
Consider donating your time to Friends.Volunteer opportunities include shopping fortoys, running errands, providing snacks, etc. Monetary donations are vital to the continuedefforts and success of Friends of Kids withCancer.
Judy says: “Obviously, our greatest need isfinancial support; but that can only be suc-cessful by people feeling and experiencing theneed and passion of our mission…helping kids with cancer…...be kids.”

Lukas Liquors on the NumericalRating System for Wine...
Some wine buyers get confusedwith the numerical rating system onwine. They see a wine with 88 pointsand another wine with 91 points. Infairness, the numeric rating system is arecent phenomenon. Robert Parker, founder of the Wine Advocate, intro-duced the numerical point system ofgrading wines in the 1970's. The turnof the 21st century saw a surge by con-sumers in taking these scores more seri-ously in their purchases of wine.
The system to rate a wine is done with points, 50 to 100. You can relate thissystem to an A to F "grade." In general, a 85 to 90-point score on wine is consid-ered "above average" to "good."90 to 95 points is "outstanding" and 95 to 100points is "extraordinary." Where the rating system gets confusing is the person ororganization that is issuing the ratings. Everybody's taste is different.
It's up to you what magazine or critic you want to believe in. Most retailerstend to use the highest rating they can find. They believe their customers willignore who actually gave a wine their score. A real liquor store posts ratings basedon the credibility of the person, not because the score was high. Robert Parkerwith the Wine Advocate and Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar are thetwo best wine critics. They receive no endorsement money or advertising dollarsfrom other wineries. If you are ever in doubt about what wines to buy, RobertParker says "ask the people that sell wine for a living." By Gary B., proud owner ofSt. Louis’ only real liquor store / www.lukasliquorstl.com
